Tito Ortiz’ Win Over Alberto ‘El Patron’ Reinstated After Ortiz Cleared of Wrongdoing

The short saga of Tito Ortiz and his overturned win from December has come to a decisive end.

On Friday, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation reinstated Ortiz' first-round rear-naked choke victory over Alberto Rodriguez, according to the official results page of the event. MMA Junkie was the first to report the change in the status of the bout.

According to a statement from TDLR, Ortiz was initially flagged for a banned substance in a post-fight drug test. "A urine sample provided by Jacob 'Tito' Christopher Ortiz on Dec. 7, 2019, at the Combate Americas MMA event showed a potentially disqualifying substance that Ortiz claimed was prescribed by a physician," the commission wrote. "Pending the outcome of the TDLR inquiry into whether the substance was indeed prescribed by a physician, TDLR marked the fight results as ‘No Contest.’ TDLR confirmed with the physician that the item was prescribed to Ortiz. TDLR has reinstated Ortiz’s victory in the Dec. 7 bout."

Ortiz garnered the tap at 3:10 of the first round of their headlining catchweight encounter at Combate Americas: Tito vs. Alberto. Previously, the bout was temporarily declared a ‘No Decision,’ but this lasted mere days until TDLR reversed course. It is unclear what substances Ortiz tested positive for, but given that it was permissible when prescribed by a physician, it would not likely fall high on the standard prohibited list.

The legendary Ortiz came out of retirement and a year-plus long layoff to take on Rodriguez. His prior two wins also came by first-round stoppage, tapping Chael Sonnen in 2017 and knocking out longtime rival Chuck Liddell in 2018. Ortiz has since claimed that despite recently turning 45, he will continue competing. It is uncertain if he will remain in the Combate Americas organization, or if his bout was part of a one-fight deal.

The man formerly known as “Dos Caras Jr.” and currently goes by “El Patron” returned from a nine-year layoff to face Ortiz, with his prior appearance a knockout loss in 2010. The 42-year-old former wrestling star also known as “Alberto Del Rio” also serves as the president of the organization. Throughout his MMA career, he has competed in organizations including Deep and Pride Fighting Championships, and his best victory likely came due to injury over Brad Kohler in 2003.
