Top 10 Featherweights Clay Guida, Chad Mendes to Collide at UFC on Fox 7 in San Jose

Two top-tier featherweights will collide on April 20 when Clay Guida and Chad Mendes face off at UFC on Fox 7.

USA Today reported the news Tuesday, verifying the booking with UFC President Dana White. The news comes on the heels of a Monday announcement that Mendes had been pulled from UFC 157 after an injury replacement could not be found for Manny Gamburyan.

UFC on Fox 7 takes place at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., and is topped by a lightweight title showdown pitting former Strikeforce titlist Gilbert Melendez against reigning UFC champ Benson Henderson. The evening’s main card airs live on Fox’s flagship network, while the prelims will be broadcast on FX and Facebook.

Guida, 31, recently made the drop to featherweight for a Jan. 26 collision with Hatsu Hioki, taking a controversial split decision over the former Sengoku champion at UFC on Fox 6. That triumph followed back-to-back defeats for “The Carpenter” at 155 pounds, as Guida dropped decisions to Henderson and Gray Maynard to snap a four-fight winning streak.

Mendes, 27, has suffered just one defeat in more than four years as a professional. After rattling off four straight wins under the defunct World Extreme Cagefighting banner, “Money” began his UFC career with a pair of victories before running into featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 142. Following his setback at the hands of “Scarface,” Mendes returned to his winning ways, posting first-round knockouts of Cody McKenzie and Yaotzin Meza last year.
