Travis Browne Sidelined 2 to 4 Months, No Surgery Needed on Torn Hamstring from UFC on FX 5

On Monday night, UFC heavyweight Travis Browne revealed that the leg injury he sustained during his UFC on FX 5 clash with Antonio Silva resulted in a torn hamstring that will sideline him for two to four months.

According to Browne, who announced the news via Twitter, surgery is not needed to repair the injury.

“Thank you for all of your support and I apologize to my friends, family and fans that had to see me lose that way,” Browne wrote. “I just got out of the [doctor’s office], and they said I tore my hamstring. I’ll be out for two to four months. Luckily no surgery.”

UFC on FX 5 took place at Target Center in Minneapolis and saw “Bigfoot” Silva hand Browne his first career defeat. Silva earned his inaugural Octagon victory via technical knockout, first driving Browne against the cage and attempting a takedown, which was stopped only when “Hapa” illegally grabbed the cage. After receiving a warning from referee Herb Dean, Browne suffered his injury in the center of the Octagon while looping a punch at his opponent’s head. Silva wasted no time in pursuing his wounded foe, backing the 30-year-old up against the cage and then unloading with a wicked right straight that put Browne on the canvas. The former Elite XC champion finished the job with ground-and-pound at 3:27 of the opening frame.

Prior to that setback, Browne had gone 4-0-1 in his two years as a UFC heavyweight, posting knockouts of James McSweeney and Stefan Struve before outpointing Rob Broughton one year ago. More recently, the Hawaiian kicked off 2012 with an arm-triangle finish of former Strikeforce talent Chad Griggs at April’s UFC 145. The win marked Browne’s first submission victory since his third pro fight back in 2009.
