Derrick Lewis vs. Viktor Pesta

Round 1

The heavyweights spend 30 seconds circling and testing the range before Lewis shoots on Pesta’s legs and rushes him to the ground. Pesta gets right back to his feet and holds Lewis in a clinch on the fence before returning the favor with a trip takedown. Straight to side control goes Pesta, elbowing Lewis’ face from the left with the cage a foot away on Lewis’ right. Lewis is trying to wrap up from underneath, not trying to escape from the position as Pesta knees his ribs. Suddenly, Lewis rolls right and powers back to his feet, then tries to hurl Pesta to the ground with an underhook. Pesta easily reverses and trips the “Black Beast” back to the base of the fence. Lewis uses a kimura from underneath to work back to his feet, but Pesta is tenacious and won’t let him off the fence. Down to the final 90 seconds of the frame as Pesta hits his third trip takedown of the round. Lewis works back to his feet again, Pesta clinging to his waist. The Czech fighter takes a glance up at the clock as he wraps up Lewis and rides out the last half minute.

Round 2

The round begins slowly, like the first, but this time it’s Pesta who shoots for a takedown. Lewis fends it off for 30 seconds with his back to the fence until Pesta finds his second effort and succeeds in flooring the American. Lewis keeps his opponent in guard as they hit the mat, and both big men swing heavy, if ineffectual punches as they scoot around the cage. With no progress being made on the ground, referee Kerry Hatley brings the heavyweights back to their feet with half the round remaining. Lewis tries to blitz and instead has the momentum turned back on him for another Pesta takedown. Both men look tired but Pesta looks exhausted as he tries to hold Lewis on the ground. Lewis won’t be held down this time, and he breaks away from Pesta’s tired clinch on the feet soon after. Pesta eats a right hand from Lewis, grabs for his legs but can’t find the takedown. Lewis stuffs him to the mat and smashes Pesta’s face with hammerfists as the final 20 seconds tick down. Referee Hatley looks poised to intervene when Pesta is saved by the bell.

Round 3

Lewis takes the center as the heavyweights baby-step around the cage. Pesta tries to circle away and gets caught near the cage with a Lewis right hand. Lewis shuts down a takedown attempt and forces Pesta to the ground, then stands over the Czech fighter and tries to shuck his legs. Lewis steps into full mount and begins unloading with both fists, smashing through Pesta’s mitts with a few particularly brutal right hands. With Pesta simply covering up and not fighting back, referee Hatley steps in and stops the bout.

Sergio Pettis vs. Chris Cariaso

Round 1

Pettis opens in orthodox but quickly switches to southpaw stance, where he catches a kick and trips Cariaso to the canvas. Cariaso puts Pettis in guard but can’t hold him there, and “The Phenom” passes to half guard on Cariaso’s left as they fight toward the fence. Cariaso reclaims full guard, posts up and stands with his back against the cage. The flyweights separate, now two minutes into the opening round, and Pettis doubles up a jab in Cariaso’s face. Cariaso delivers a body kick and evades another trip, then gets side-kicked against the cage by Pettis. The action is picking up on the feet with two minutes left, Pettis connecting with jabs and mixing in a few head kick attempts. Cariaso keeps going to the body with kicks, as his punches upstairs are being largely deflected by Pettis’ high guard. A sneaky right hand sends Cariaso to the ground, where Pettis tries to polish him off with follow-up punches. Cariaso pulls him into guard and spends the 30 seconds of the round on his back while Pettis stands over him, swinging punches.

Round 2

Pettis keeps Cariaso on the end of his jab through the opening minute of the round, then sends him to the canvas with a quick trip when Cariaso tries to step inside and tie up. Pettis moves to half guard, gets put back in Cariaso’s closed guard and goes body-head a few times with punches. Back to half guard goes Pettis, trying to push Cariaso’s head to the canvas and create some space to strike, but Cariaso is crafty and keeping things very tight on the ground. Referee Joe Solis stands up the fighters halfway through the round. Cariaso tries to push forward with more body kicks but he’s soon discouraged by Pettis’ snappy jabs. Pettis catches him coming forward, changes levels and floors him with a double-leg. This time, the Roufusport fighter pushes through Cariaso’s guard to full mount, but he’s there only a few seconds before Cariaso gets a knee inside and pushes him off. Pettis stands, slowly pulls his leg free of a Cariaso heel hook attempt and then stands over “Kamikaze” to kick at his legs.

Round 3

Pettis shoves Cariaso to the ground in the first 30 seconds of the round, then tries to catch him in a guillotine as he works back to his feet. Cariaso gets free of the choke, so Pettis releases, stands and hits another takedown to reclaim top position. Cariaso sweeps again, slips out of a brief armbar attempt and sets up on top in Pettis’ guard. Cariaso isn’t doing much with the position, his right arm locked down by Pettis, who seems to be fishing for another armbar or triangle. Cariaso stands to free the limb and gets clipped by an upkick that sends him kneeling right back down in Pettis’ guard. The flyweights continue to fight on the mat with 2:45 on the clock; Cariaso is trying to mount a comeback, swinging punches at Pettis, but being stymied by the Milwaukeean’s constant shifting from his back. Pettis reclaims guard and tries to creep his legs up the body of Cariaso, who senses danger and stands up. Cariaso tries a last-ditch heel hook attempt in the closing seconds but the fence prevents him from stretching out and Pettis survives to the final bell.

Sage Northcutt vs. Francisco Trevino

Round 1

Northcutt takes the center of the cage and rapidly switches stances in front of the southpaw Trevino, who tries an awkward hook kick and gets knocked to the ground. Northcutt catches him trying to stand and lights up Trevino with punches against the cage. A huge double-leg takedown follows, and Trevino is in trouble as soon as he touches the ground. Northcutt unloads with a barrage of heavy elbows that soon forces referee Herb Dean into action. Trevino jumps up and gets in Dean’s face about the stoppage, but the replay shows that Trevino was in a daze after the assault. Sage Northcutt lives up to expectations with a fast finish in his short-notice Octagon debut.

Rose Namajunas vs. Angela Hill

Round 1

Namajunas uses her long reach to put a few right hands on Hill’s face in the opening 30 seconds, then the strawweights clinch up and fight to the fence. Hill takes the outside position, but Namajunas quickly reverses and circles out to the center. Hill takes a jab to the fence, puts a kick on Namajunas’ lead leg. “Thug Rose” presses into range, wraps up Hill and trips her to the ground. Hill is able to fend off a guard pass but gives up her back as she tries to stand. Namajunas wastes no time in taking the back and stays locked on as Hill powers back to her feet. Almost instantly, Namajunas slaps on a tight rear-naked choke. Hill tries to fight it off, punching and flailing until she finally loses consciousness and slumps to the ground. Referee Joe Solis steps in, and an ecstatic Namajunas celebrates her first UFC win.

Adriano Martins vs. Islam Makhachev

Round 1

The southpaws circle and feint in the center of the cage until 30 seconds in, when Martins lands an overhand left counter to a Makhachev body kick. Makhachev pushes out from the center, swinging big punches which graze the backpedaling Brazilian. There’s more swinging and missing from both men as they try to find the range, now 90 seconds into the bout. Makhachev wades into the pocket with a wild overhand left and gets lit up by a beautiful counter right from Martins. The Russian drops to the ground on his back, in a daze, and Martins moves in to drop another hammerfist just as referee Frank Collazo rushes in to stop the fight. Adriano Martins scores a quick and nasty knockout to hand Islam Makhachev his first loss.

Alan Jouban vs. Albert Tumenov

Round 1

Jouban tries to barge into range and throw a knee to the body, but the leg is caught by Tumenov and used to dump the American to the floor. Jouban gets up with his hands high as Tumenov is bombing him with punches the whole way. Tumenov catches a kick and trips Jouban again, this time allowing him to stand without repercussion. Tumenov moves forward slowly against the southpaw, then backs up as Jouban swings and misses with a big combination. Jouban is wearing some redness on the right side of his face 90 seconds in, but he’s still in the fight, still keeping his jab in Tumenov’s face. Tumenov turns another caught kick into a takedown, and again Jouban bounces back up. An inside thigh kick from Jouban lands square on Tumenov’s cup, and referee Frank Collazo gives the Russian a moment to recuperate. Action resumes with three minutes on the clock and Tumenov rushes Jouban with more punches. Jouban strikes back with a stiff jab that seems to bloody Tumenov’s nose. Tumenov rocks Jouban with a partially blocked right high kick, then puts him in real trouble with a massive uppercut. A crushing left cross sends Jouban to the ground in a heap, and referee Collazo dives in to save him. Albert Tumenov impresses once again with a punishing stoppage in the first round.

Yair Rodriguez vs. Daniel Hooker

Round 1

The rangy Hooker lines up southpaw and cuts angles around the outside, while Rodriguez switches stances and flicks out kicks from the center of the cage. Rodriguez threatens with a few spinning attacks but doesn’t pull the trigger as Hooker circles away. Ninety seconds into the round, neither man has committed to any offense. Rodriguez catches Hooker throwing a kick and chops out his other leg, then tags the New Zealander with a few punches on his way back up. Rodriguez misses with a spinning kick upstairs but connects with one to the body. Hooker catches the next kick and rushes Rodriguez against the fence, where Rodriguez jumps guard with a guillotine. The choke isn’t tight and Hooker is able to fight his way out of it, only to be hurled to the ground by Rodriguez, who steps straight into full mount. Hooker, being the larger man, is able to muscle his way out of the bad position and back to his feet. The featherweights clinch on the fence, Hooker on the outside with an underhook as the last 90 seconds of the round tick away. Rodriguez tries another throw, can’t get it this time, and he remains pinned against the cage. Rodriguez uses the whizzer to escape with 30 seconds left, giving Hooker a knee to the gut on the way out.

Round 2

Rodriguez catches Hooker stepping forward and foot-sweeps him to the ground, then allows him to stand. Both men work from the southpaw stance as they circle in the opening minute, Hooker landing a few leg kicks. Hooker instigates another clinch, pinning Rodriguez to the cage with an underhook and throwing short uppercuts with his right hand. Rodriguez pulls guard and tries a loose heel hook which doesn’t force a tap but allows him to scramble back to his feet. Rodriguez partially connects with a cartwheel kick, then matadors Hooker as he charges forward. After being thrown to the deck, Hooker stands and continues to pressure Rodriguez, who is now fending him off with stomping kicks to the thigh. Hooker takes a right hook as he charges into the pocket to give Rodriguez one in return. Rodriguez hits a trip but can’t contain Hooker on the ground, and the 145ers are back on their feet with 60 seconds left. Hooker clinches again, pops Rodriguez with a couple short right hands upstairs and releases. Rodriguez throws a lazy front kick and pays for it with a straight left counter to the face. Rodriguez barges into a double-leg takedown in the final 10 seconds and finishes the round on top.

Round 3

Hooker steps forward cautiously, dodging a spinning kick from Rodriguez and then pressing inside to clinch. The fighters both throw knees as they break apart, and Rodriguez takes one to the cup. “Pantera” recovers after a minute and action resumes with Hooker chasing Rodriguez around the outside, landing a few hooks to the body. Rodriguez tries a spinning back-fist, gets caught turning around and pulled to the ground by Hooker from the rear waistlock position. Rodriguez threatens with a toe hold, then traps Hooker in an awkward half guard to deliver some elbows to the face. Now bloodied, Hooker sits up to drop hammerfists but is outworked by Rodriguez’s double-fisted punches from the bottom. Hooker continues to work from the top with two minutes left, throwing right hands to Rodriguez’s body while Rodriguez answers with left hands and backfists from underneath. Rodriguez is angling for an armbar but Hooker is wise to it and bears down to protect his left arm. With 45 seconds remaining, referee Kerry Hatley brings the fighters back to their feet and calls the doctor to check on Hooker’s damage. Hooker is quickly cleared to continue and begins chasing after Rodriguez, who is on his horse with less than a minute remaining. Rodriguez misses with another cartwheel kick as time runs out, and this one will be decided by the judges.

Jessica Eye vs. Julianna Pena

Round 1

There’s no touch of gloves as Eye gets straight to work with a flurry of punches, and a left hand on the cheek appears to sting Pena. A few more shots land for Eye before the bantamweights clinch up and Pena pulls guard. Eye comes down in side control and Pena immediately gets to work trying to sweep. The women work back to their feet and Pena, trapped in a loose headlock, pushes Eye against the fence. Pena frees her head, but Eye reverses the position and grinds on the “Ultimate Fighter” winner’s face with her cornrows. Both fighters throw short punches in the clinch but there’s not a lot happening two minutes into the fight. Halfway through the round, Pena tries a trip takedown, but Eye lands on her knees and tries to jump on Pena’s back. Pena gets out the back door and tags Eye with a couple punches in the clinch before they separate. Eye starts another clinch seconds later, taking the outside again to land knees to Pena’s body. Pena trips Eye to the canvas and lands in side control on the Ohioan’s left. With one minute to go in the opening round, Pena frames up a D’arce choke. Eye is blocking the choke, so Pena socks her in the face with a hammerfist. More punches and elbows land down the stretch for Pena, who spins to take Eye’s back just as time expires.

Round 2

Eye goes directly back to the clinch, but this time Pena is able to work her way off the fence within 30 seconds. Eye catches a kick from the “Venezuelan Vixen” and converts it to a takedown, though Pena appeared willing to jump guard. Pena tries to sweep again but in the process allows Eye to advance to half guard, then side control. Pena rolls to her knees, Eye follows in riding position and then rolls her over to take the back. Instead of a rear-naked choke, Eye catches Pena rolling the other way and traps her in an arm-triangle choke. Pena is surviving by trapping Eye in half guard, but even so, the choke looks tight. Pena continues to fight off the choke, gradually loosening Eye’s grip until she finally escapes with 1:45 on the clock. Eye remains in Pena’s half guard, putting all her weight across Pena’s body to keep her on the ground. Pena rolls to her knees again and Eye tries to catch her in an inverted triangle. Pena slides free of the choke before it’s fully applied and winds up in north-south position. From her back, Eye throws an illegal knee to Pena’s head. Referee Frank Collazo pauses the fight with 20 seconds left and takes one point away from Eye, but then bafflingly restarts the fighters on their feet for the remainder of the round.

Round 3

Pena presses forward to start the final round but gets caught with a couple counters as she moves “Evil” Eye toward the fence. A quick takedown puts Pena on top, in Eye’s guard with more than four minutes left to fight. Eye closes her guard around Pena, who shucks the legs and passes to side control, nearly getting caught in another inverted triangle along the way. Pena doesn’t seem concerned with the choke as she continues to drive knees into Eye’s body, now from side control. Eye rolls to her knees and has her back taken by Pena, who pulls Eye backward to the mat and slaps on a tight rear-naked choke. Eye looks ready to go out just as she stretches her neck, turns into the choke and loosens Pena’s grip. With two minutes to go, it’s Pena on top, grinding Eye into the ground with heavy pressure and short elbows. Eye regains closed guard, tries to creep her legs up for a triangle and gets stuffed. Pena passes to the side with one minute on the clock and grabs a topside, one-armed guillotine. Eye tries to ride it out and buck Pena off, but Pena stays heavy and keeps hold of the choke until the final bell.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Ali Bagautinov

Round 1

The flyweights circle cautiously until Bagautinov throws a leg kick and Benavidez charges forward to swipe him with a right hand counter. From his back foot, Bagautinov appears to get in a right hand, too. The next right from Benavidez lands for sure and pushes the Russian a few steps backward. Benavidez ducks under a hook and goes body-head on Bagautinov, who circles back to the center. Benavidez switches to southpaw and lands a few leg kicks, then a pawing left hook up top. Halfway through the opening round, the 125ers continue to circle, neither man having carved out a clear advantage. Bagautinov shuts down a double-leg and makes Benavidez pay with an uppercut on the way out. The Team Alpha Male fighter comes away from the exchange leaking blood from the outside corner of his left eye. Benavidez looks like he wants to close the gap, but every time he gets close, Bagautinov lets loose with a sequence of heavy punches. Bagautinov sprawls on a shot, then another, but Benavidez tags him with a right hook on the way out. Benavidez is feinting hard, trying to get Bagautinov to bite on something, but both men look like they want to counter.

Round 2

There’s not much action through the first minute of round two, though both men graze with body kicks. Benavidez goes upstairs with a left high kick and tries to walk Bagautinov toward the fence, only to be pushed back with a pair of punches. Two minutes in now, still not much offense to speak of between the flyweights, who circle the cage and wind up for single punches until the midway mark. Neither man is consistently finding his range, and Benavidez’s takedown attempts have all been thwarted by Bagautinov, who is almost purely reactionary in his striking. Bagautinov digs a right hand to the body of Benavidez, who tries to land with three straight high kicks, all of which miss. Benavidez fakes a shot and throws a right hand, both dodged by the “Puncher.” Bagautinov grabs a leg and tries to run Benavidez to the ground, but the Texas native stays up. With 20 seconds left, Bagautinov runs Benavidez to the ground and nearly takes his back in a scramble, but the 125ers finish in a standing in a neutral position.

Round 3

Benavidez threatens a shot early in the final round but is sidestepped. A pair of punches down the center connect for Benavidez, who gets clipped back by an overhand right. Bagautinov catches a kick and tries to run Benavidez down in the middle of the cage, but the speedy American limp-legs away. Bagautinov is becoming a little more predictable late, loading up with big overhand bombs while Benavidez jabs and kicks his way forward. A big clinch knee scores for Benavidez, who begins playing matador to the suddenly aggressive Bagautinov halfway through the round. Benavidez is coming up short on many of his strikes but still cutting off Bagautinov’s angles and controlling the center of the cage. Bagautinov thwarts another attempt at a double-leg before Benavidez even gets started. A clubbing right hand on the neck scores for Bagautinov in an exchange. With 45 seconds on the clock, Bagautinov changes levels and tries a takedown, instead ending up with a rear waistlock. He runs Benavidez against the fence, where Benavidez breaks out of the clinch with a knee and a right hand to the face. Bagautinov goes all-out in the final seconds, throwing big right hands and spinning kicks, but Benavidez avoids them and this one will go to the scorecards.

Round 1

Jordan wants to close the distance right away against Magomedov, who holds a considerable height and reach advantage against the American. After a minute of circling the outside, Jordan digs an underhook and pushes the Russian against the cage. Magomedov is quick to reverse but can’t keep the position, and Jordan takes him down with a slow-motion double-leg at the base of the fence. Magomedov sits up and threatens to grab a kimura, so Jordan yanks the legs out from under him and tries to peel him off the cage. Magomedov gets to one knee, then back to his feet with two minutes left in the round, and now he tries a standing kimura on the former football player. Jordan frees his arm and the heavyweights reset with 90 seconds to go. Jordan is headhunting, stalking Magomedov around the perimeter and loading up a big left hand when he gets close enough. Magomedov snipes with long, straight rights and kicks to the body, then drubs Jordan with a pair of hooks when he whiffs on an overhand.

Round 2

Jordan inches forward and then explodes into range with a body kick and a right hand on the cheek which seems to stun Magomedov. The heavyweights once again tie up on the fence, but Magomedov releases and backs off soon after taking the outside position. Jordan walks down his man again, bends over to try a high double-leg but can’t slam Magomedov to the ground this time. The Russian “Leopard” keeps his balance and socks Jordan with punches to the head while fending off the takedown. They separate two minutes into the round and Jordan comes chasing, rushing at first and then slowly walking Magomedov toward the fence. They meet back in the center with 90 seconds left and Jordan changes levels to try the double again. Magomedov backs up to the fence, where the fighters trade positions in the clinch a few times. Magomedov releases and backs up to throw a big right high kick which just misses.

Round 3

Jordan forces the fight back to the fence early in the round, but he’s caught in a headlock from Magomedov, rendering him unable to complete, or even work for the takedown. Magomedov spins him around and slugs Jordan with an uppercut, then misses with a high kick as the “Savage” circles away. Magomedov scores with a one-two, has a right high kick blocked, then slides backward as Jordan swings and misses with heavy punches. Jordan may be tired but he’s still getting his hands up to block Magomedov’s head kicks, and it’s a good thing because they’re coming with more frequency here in the final round. At the midway point, Magomedov puts a push kick in Jordan’s breadbasket, then lands another when Jordan walks forward on him. Jordan tries another high double and gets reversed against the cage one more time, now inside the two-minute mark. Magomedov releases the clinch and slaps Jordan’s face with a left high kick, but it doesn’t land flush. Magomedov tries to clinch up now, only to be reversed against the cage. The heavyweights break with 45 seconds to go and Jordan walks forward with his hands by his waist. Rashad Evans vs. Ryan Bader

Round 1

Evans crawls out of his corner to meet Bader, who backs up the former champ with a high kick and one to the leg. Bader sticks a jab, whiffs on an overhand right and goes to Evans’ body with another kick. Evans is moving well but not finding a ton of success with his punches in the first two minutes. “Suga” catches Bader shooting from a mile away and stuffs his head into the mat. Bader bounces back to his feet and touches Evans with a left hook on the cheek. Evans takes the center of the cage midway through the round while Bader continues to move around the outside, sticking a few nice jabs. Evans double-pumps his jab, too, but can’t catch Bader up against the fence. Bader hits Evans with a right hand and sidesteps as Evans tries to counter, then slips to his knees. Evans gets up without incident and continues walking after Bader, who lands the jab again. Evans catches him against the fence with a quick combination and tries a takedown, but Bader circles off the fence and catches Evans with a shot on the way out. Evans is looking for a big right hand in the closing moments while Bader stays behind his jab.

Round 2

Bader’s jab is working again early in round two, and he finds Evans’ chin with a short right cross and follow-up left hook, too. A slapping kick to the body forces Evans to step back a bit, but he’s soon walking after Bader again, swinging the big right. Bader continues to dodge and stick jabs until 90 seconds into the round, when he powers into a takedown and floors Evans near the fence. Evans is on his feet 15 seconds later, but Bader wraps him around the waist and trips him straight back down. Evans stands again and breaks free of Bader’s grasp halfway through the round. The former champ swings and misses with another right-handed haymaker. Bader is sticking near the fence, staying on his back foot and snapping back Evans’ head with more jabs. Evans connects with a right hand but Bader absorbs it and goes back to circling near the fence. Evans just keeps coming, eats a couple more jabs and answers with an inside leg kick. Bader digs a hook to the body of Evans, who is having trouble finding the angle for a big right hand against the constantly moving Bader. With 40 seconds to go, Evans lets go with the bomb, but it’s Bader scoring with counters on his way out. Evans shoots for a late takedown and gets stuffed but finishes the round holding Bader on the cage.

Round 3

Evans emerges for round three with his right eye nearly swollen shut. The fighters go straight back to the routine of round two: Bader circling the outside with his back near the fence while Evans follows and works from the center. Bader steps out to the center with a good right hand, resets and hits the visually impaired Evans with a left hook. Another short left hook scores for Bader as he meets Evans in the middle again. Evans is still dangerous, still trying to trap Bader at a bad angle on the fence to unload with the homerun shot. He holds Bader in a brief clinch, but they break apart halfway through the round. Bader slams Evans’ right side with a loud kick. Evans shoots for a takedown against the fence with two minutes to go, gets stuffed by Bader, who separates with a slicing elbow strike. Evans misses with a looping right and takes an overhand in return, but he just keeps walking forward. Bader stays behind his jab until the 30-second mark, when he drives Evans to the mat with a blast double-leg. Evans gets right back up and stuffs Bader’s last single-leg attempt at the horn.

Daniel Cormier vs. Alexander Gustafsson

Round 1

Herb Dean is the referee for tonight’s 205-pound main event, with judges Derek Cleary, Sal D’Amato and Kerry Hatley scoring at cageside. Cormier stakes out the center of the cage and hits Gustafsson with a few leg kicks as the Swede circles the outside. The champ changes levels near the cage and slams Gustafsson to the ground. Gustafsson attacks with a kimura off his back and manages to hold Cormier in guard, although his attempt to stand is unsuccessful as the champ slams him back down in the center of the cage. Cormier is ramping up his ground-and-pound halfway through the round, blasting Gustafsson with punches to the body and head, roughing him up with forearms on the face in between. Gustafsson tries a triangle, easily denied by Cormier. “DC” sits up in Gustafsson’s half guard and drops a couple hammerfists, then goes back to grinding with elbows and forearms. Gustafsson explodes back to his feet with 1:15 on the clock, tries to tag Cormier with long punches but can’t find the mark. Cormier continues to feed leg kicks to the taller man as they circle in the last minute. Gustafsson backs up the champ with a leg kick of his own and then has to dash away as Cormier throws a big right hand. Gustafsson trips Cormier near the end of the round, but Cormier bounces back up to finish with a pair of clinch uppercuts.

Round 2

Gustafsson’s reach advantage isn’t paying off just yet, as his snaking punches fail to find Cormier’s face behind the champ’s high hands. Cormier takes a hook to the gut and then has a takedown denied by Gustafsson, who sprints away when he sees a big right hand coming. Cormier keeps walking forward, stepping in behind a jab to catch a knee and try a takedown. Gustafsson stuffs it and then wraps up Cormier for a quick takedown of his own. Cormier springs back to his feet and socks his challenger with a couple quick uppercuts in the collar tie. Changing levels, Cormier runs Gustafsson against the fence, where the Swede conks him on the temple with a horizontal elbow. Gustafsson breaks out of the clinch with 2:45 on the clock; the Swede’s face is red and swelling, but Cormier is cut beneath his right eye and leaking blood down his cheek, too. Cormier grazes with an overhand right, backs up Gustafsson with a jab. The 205ers tie up in the middle, where Cormier scores with more clinch uppercuts before separating. Gustafsson is keeping his jab out there, making Cormier wary of walking straight into the pocket. Cormier’s hands are dropping here late in round two, and Gustafsson is beginning to sidestep his combinations. Gustafsson eats another big uppercut, circles out and changes levels to hit another takedown. Again, Cormier is able to stand immediately, but he rides out the final 20 seconds with Gustafsson kneeing his legs.

Round 3

Cormier keeps the pressure on Gustafsson at the start of round three, not offering much in the way of strikes but constantly walking forward, keeping him circling. The champ eats a step-in knee to the face, chases after Gustafsson and tags him with a reaching right hand to the temple. Another overhand right scores for the champ, sending Gustafsson sprinting away again. Gustafsson is cut on his nose as he moves to tie up with Cormier, who’s waiting with another pair of clinch uppercuts. The fighters circle back to the middle with three minutes left and Gustafsson gets Cormier to bite hard on a faked shot. When he gets up, Cormier takes a few jabs to the mush as he continues to walk Gustafsson around the cage. Two minutes to go, Gustafsson is slap-boxing a bit. Cormier catches a kick and comes over the top with a right hand, then unloads with three or four hellacious uppercuts in the clinch. Gustafsson comes away from the exchange with an even bloodier face, but he still clips the incoming Cormier with a left hook off his back foot. Cormier is going hard in the clinch when, out of nowhere, Gustafsson breaks free with a Thai plumb and drills the champ with a huge knee. Cormier hits the deck, then seems to come to his senses and drives for a desperation single-leg takedown. Gustafsson stuffs the shot, trying to grab the Thai clinch for another knee, but Cormier is back in this fight and keeps his face out of danger until the round ends.

Round 4

Cormier seems to have recovered from his third-round scare as he goes right back to pressuring Gustafsson around the outside. Gustafsson steps out to the center after 30 seconds and walks into Cormier’s jab. The champ shuts down a takedown attempt and tags Gustafsson with a right hand, then a backhand on the other return. Gustafsson is on the retreat but not giving up, just looking to create some space between himself and Cormier’s constant pressure. Cormier touches with an overhand right, sticks a jab on Gustafsson’s already busted nose and then takes a jab in return from the Swede. Halfway through the round, Gustafsson reverses the momentum and starts walking forward on Cormier, even connecting with a couple long, straight punches, but Cormier back on the march soon after. Gustafsson eats a couple shots and begins dashing away again, maybe trying to bait Cormier into another knee, which he nearly connects with here. Inside the final minute, Cormier takes a few more hard jabs to land the right hand-backfist again. Gustafsson eats more clinch uppercuts, circles away and picks the ankle of Cormier as he throws a kick. Cormier jumps back up and finishes the round with a jab and a glancing overhand right on Gustafsson’s chin.

Round 5

Gustafsson’s face is a lumpy, swollen mess as he comes out for the final round, while Cormier is sporting a sizable mouse and cut underneath his right eye. Gustafsson pumps his jab to keep Cormier out of range, so the champ chops at the challenger’s lead leg with a kick. Cormier has his hands high as he tries to wade inside; when he connects with an overhand right, Gustafsson sprints away around the edge of the cage again. More pressure from Cormier now, and a nice overhand left turns Gustafsson’s head. Gustafsson eats another overhand, sees the next one coming and runs. He tries a single-leg but Cormier denies it, then follows Gustafsson back to the center to feed him more uppercuts in the tie-up. Two minutes left and the light heavyweights clash along the fence. Neither man gains the upper hand in the clinch, so they circle tiredly back to the middle and tie up there. Cormier connects with a right hand, an uppercut, then eats a huge knee from Gustafsson on the break. The champ keeps coming forward with one minute left, grabbing Gustafsson around the neck and hitting him with more uppercuts. Gustafsson catches Cormier coming forward and drills him with one more knee before time runs out.
