UFC 197 Becomes UFC 196 After Feb. 6 Pay-Per-View Rebranded as Fight Night Card

The injuries to Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum have forced the Ultimate Fighting Championship to do a little bit of rebranding with its events.

The Las Vegas-based promotion announced on Wednesday that UFC 196 will now be known as UFC Fight Night “Hendricks vs. Thompson.” Originally scheduled as a pay-per-view card, the event was moved to Fox Sports 1 after losing its heavyweight championship headliner. UFC Fight Night takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena on Feb. 6 and features a five-round clash between Johny Hendricks and Stephen Thompson.

As a result, the event formerly known as UFC 197, which was set for the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on March 5, now becomes UFC 196. That card is headlined by a lightweight title tilt between Rafael dos Anjos and Conor McGregor, while Holly Holm defends her bantamweight belt against Miesha Tate in the co-main event.

While nothing has been confirmed, a promotion official informed Sherdog.com that the UFC is reviewing its options and will likely add another numbered pay-per-view event to its calendar between now and UFC 200, which is set for July 9 in Las Vegas.
