Sabina Mazo vs. Shana Dobson

Round 1

To begin the early prelims, we start off in the women's flyweight division, where we will see Mazo (6-1, 0-1 UFC) square off against Dobson (3-2, 1-1 UFC). Refereeing the first bout of the evening is Frank Trigg. The two start right in the center of the cage and trade kicks immediately. Mazo starts off with a couple body kicks that are very strong. In an exchange, Mazo cracks Dobson with a body kick that hurts Dobson badly, and Dobson backs against the cage in pain. The Colombian unleashes a flurry of strikes including a few strong elbows, and then suddenly decides to change things up and take Dobson to the ground. Sitting in full guard, Mazo drops down some solid ground-and-pound including some more work to Dobson's body and peppering in a few short elbows for good measure. After some more strikes, Dobson scrambles and almost explodes out of it, but loses it and Mazo remains on top with a few more left hands and elbows to make Dobson pay for that maneuver. Mazo drops a dozen or so audible punches to Dobson's body that Dobson clearly does not appreciate. In response, Dobson throws up her legs, and Mazo uses that moment to jump to half guard and attempt to take side. With some leverage against the cage, Dobson stands up but eats some powerful knees to the body in the process. Mazo will not let Dobson rest, as she takes the fight right back down to the canvas in short order. Taking full mount, Mazo continues to pummel Dobson's body as Dobson holds on tight to try to ride out the end of the round. Mazo ends the dominant first round in style with a few elbows to punctuate the opening round of the evening.

Round 2

Mazo opens up the second round with several more body kicks to keep Dobson at bay early and often. Continuing to press her opponent, Mazo pushes Dobson against the cage with a Thai clinch, delivering a few knees up the middle to Dobson's already injured body. Dobson tries to protect herself with her back against the cage by lifting her right leg to block the knees, but Mazo continues to land knees at a solid clip. "Danger" attempts to break the clinch with an elbow, but Mazo holds on tight and will not let Dobson breathe for an instant. Deciding it's time to go back to the ground, Mazo drops for a double leg takedown and scores it with ease, where she lands in half guard. After holding Dobson down for a minute, Dobson explodes back to her feet but Mazo times a perfect knee to the body. The two separate and Dobson finally starts getting off some boxing, but Mazo stays composed and backs away to launch a few more kicks as the horn ends the second round.

Round 3

Knowing she is likely down two rounds, Dobson begins the final round swinging hooks at her foe, but they largely fall short. Mazo keeps her distance and lands a few more kicks to the Dobson's already damaged body. Dobson unloads a big right hand that dings Mazo, but in the process Mazo catches Dobson to the body again. This stuns Dobson and Mazo capitalizes on it with a bevy of knees to try to finish the fight. Trigg is closing in on the action knowing that Dobson is hurt badly, but Dobson stays on her feet. Mazo snags the Thai clinch and continues firing knees at reckless abandon, and almost all of them land. Dobson is hanging on by a thread, but instead of blasting her adversary with more knees, Mazo takes Dobson one more time. This time, "The Colombian Queen" lands in side control and opts to keep her knees going, slamming a few more into Dobson's compromised midsection. With 30 seconds left, Mazo postures up and drops some punishing elbows buffered by loud kiais. The fight ends, and Dobson has survived -- albeit barely. This was one-way traffic, and Mazo will almost certainly earn the first win of her UFC career.

Kyung Ho Kang vs. Brandon Davis

Round 1

We next move to the bantamweight division, where Kang (15-8, 1 NC; 4-2, 1 NC UFC) will take on Davis (10-6, 2-3 UFC). The referee is George Allen. Davis starts the fight with a strong kick to Kang's lead leg, and Kang fires one right back. Davis continues the leg kicks to Kang's outstretched leg, and in doing so Kang tries to go over the top with a right hand but misses. Kang presses forward to try to take down the Mississippi native, but is unsuccessful, and Davis makes Kang pay for that failed attempt with a knee to the chin. Kang lands a few stiff left hands, but Davis tags Kang with a low kick that makes Kang stumble to the floor for a second. Less than halfway through the first round, Kang's lead leg is already showing some serious damage, but Kang tries to return with another few sharp left hands. Davis continues to land more of those low leg kicks, and Kang has not checked a single one and already shows his movement to be a little hampered. As the two trade jabs, Davis does not relent with his leg kicks like he is chopping down a tree. With Kang worrying about the kick, Davis lands a three-piece combination, but Kang counters with a right hand that plants Davis on the canvas. Davis springs back up but Kang leaps on him, getting Davis against the cage before taking the Alan Belcher MMA Club representative's back. Davis spins out to protect his back but in the process Kang takes half guard with about 30 seconds left. Unable to do much with the position, Davis survives and rides out the round.

Round 2

The second round begins a lot like the first, with Kang working his effective jab while Davis tries for some more low leg kicks. Kang tries to take the fight back down, and Davis rolls for an armbar attempt that Kang does not fall for. In the scramble, Kang advances to top position, and ends up in Davis' guard. Davis cracks Kang with an upkick that wobbles the South Korean momentarily, and he uses that instability to get back to his feet. As Davis attempts a few more kicks, Kang is finally wise to it, as he counters Davis over the top as Davis throws the kick. This does not dissuade Davis from his kicks, as he grins after being punched on the nose and keeps throwing. A stern knee and a few more leg kicks back away Kang against the cage, but Kang circles out and tags Davis, causing Davis' mouthpiece to fall out. The referee elects not to return Davis' mouthpiece as the two trade recklessly. It took upwards of a minute for Allen to pause the action and give Davis his gumshield, and the two continue to trade. Davis jumps in the air to try to land a flying knee to end the round emphatically but misses, and the bell ends Round 2.

Round 3

As the third round begins, Davis is grinning from ear to ear while they touch gloves. Davis throws a few hard leg kicks, and as Kang switches stances to avoid the damage, Davis lands one to his foe's opposite leg. Davis tries for a big head kick and falls on his back, and Kang dives forward to take advantage of the mistake and lands in side control. Allen calls several times for the action to begin, and inexplicably he stands the fight up while Kang is on top in side control. Objectively speaking, this was not the right call, but luckily for Kang, he gets the fight back down and takes side control again. Like when he was on top previously, Kang does not land anything while on top and Allen again calls for Kang to do something. Davis explodes back to his feet, and Kang tries to jump on Davis' back but is unsuccessful. Davis throws heavy leather, celebrating that the fight is back to the feet again, and Kang decides against standing with his seemingly fresher opponent. Kang takes Davis back down one more time, and finally starts getting off a little ground-and-pound. Although none of his strikes are landing cleanly, Kang is still effectively controlling his opponent. The final horn sounds with Kang on top, and the two share an embrace after it's over.

Hannah Cifers vs. Jodie Esquibel

Round 1

Headlining the early preliminaries is a women's strawweight clash between Cifers (9-3, 1-1 UFC) and Esquibel (6-5, 0-3 UFC), with the latter hunting for her first win inside the Octagon. This battle between the two measuring a combined 10 feet 2 inches of height is one of the most diminutive in promotional history. Our referee is Jason Herzog. As the fight begins, the two keep a long distance from one another, well out of striking range. Cifers tries for a few leg kicks but none land, as Esquibel is content to circle on the outside. Esquibel feints and fakes her way into a combination that partially lands, as Cifers throws back more successfully. The last few times Esquibel has tried to work her way in, Cifers has caught her coming in. One strike causes Esquibel to touch her eye briefly, whether it was a missed eye poke or a damaging punch is unclear, as the action continues. Cifers scores with a body kick from each leg, and both Esquibel and Cifers land right hands. A head kick from Esquibel causes Cifers to grin as it landed successfully, and Esquibel leaps forward with a left hand as well. Esquibel shoots in for a takedown but Cifers staves it off and counters effectively with a few punches. Cifers lands a solid leg kick and then dings Esquibel with a right hand as Esquibel is coming in. With the 10-second clapper sounding, Esquibel pushes for one more takedown attempt but Cifers hops out of the way. The round ends.

Round 2

The round begins tentatively, without either fighter really committing on their punches. Esquibel throws a push kick while Cifers replies with a head kick that is blocked. Esquibel repeatedly tries to charge forward but Cifers keeps her at range, before throwing a leg kick that causes Esquibel to pick her leg up. After a few more leg kicks, Esquibel finally gets the fight where she wants it, scoring a takedown and getting into full guard. Cifers keeps her opponent tied up as Herzog warns Esquibel to do more, and then stands them up seconds later. Esquibel throws an ill-advised head kick that Cifers snatches up and tosses Esquibel to the canvas. Esquibel gets back to her feet and surprisingly manages to get Cifers down. Cifers immediately throws her legs up to try for a triangle, and pulls for an armbar that does not get cinched up. As Cifers briefly attempts an omoplata as well, Esquibel is wise to it and escapes, and the two get back to their feet. Both attempt to find their range, and Esquibel opts to start throwing a few kicks as the horn sounds and the round comes to a close.

Round 3

Before the round begins, the doctor comes in to check on the eye of Esquibel, but she is cleared and we begin the third and final round. Cifers throws a few leg kicks that do not amount to much, and they also throw kicks at one another that fall short. Esquibel tries to swing a few hooks but is well short of the target. Cifers tries for another leg kick and Esquibel tries to check it, as Cifers lands upstairs with a right hand. Cifers stings Esquibel with a solid body kick, and Esquibel tries to give one back but it is blocked. While Cifers tries to throw a left-right, Esquibel times the takedown and puts Cifers on her back. Keeping heavy top pressure, Esquibel is unable to mount any effective offense or advance her position to any degree. Herzog sees that Esquibel is not doing enough to stay on the ground, and we get back to the feet. Esquibel scores with a front kick to the chest of Cifers, but does not follow it up with anything. Instead, Cifers continues to work Esquibel's lead leg with more kicks, as Esquibel whiffs with some punches. Cifers fires off a few combinations, and each end with body kick. Seconds to go, Esquibel tries for one final takedown, and Cifers reverses it and swings wildly as the bell sounds and the fight is over. The biggest test of the night for Cifers is likely coming up, as she may have to face Joe Rogan in her victorious post-fight interview.

Manny Bermudez vs. Casey Kenney

Round 1

Kicking off the ESPN prelims is a bout originally scheduled at bantamweight, but the night before weigh-ins, the UFC opted to push it to a 140-pound catchweight, as Bermudez (14-0, 3-0 UFC) meets Kenney (12-1-1, 1-0 UFC). Drawing the assignment for this catchweight contest is referee Frank Trigg. The fight immediately begins with a high kick from Kenney, as he opts to stay at distance and kick against his taller foe. As Kenney tries for another kick, Bermudez comes over the top and tags Kenney. Bermudez closes in and grabs hold of Kenney, and gets Kenney down to the ground. Kenney tries to wrangle out but Bermudez keeps him tight, while advancing to half guard as the dreaded "woo birds" make their voices heard. Kenney pops to his feet as Bermudez tries to take position, and Kenney uses a judo throw to surprise Bermudez and get him down instead. Kenney shows no fear of Bermudez' ground game, and takes side control while shoving away any defenses from Bermudez. The Massachusetts native unusually twists Kenney in an effort to take Kenney's back, and in the process Bermudez gets back to his feet. The two trade knees in the clinch, and then back away. Kenney partially scores a spinning back kick and a few right hands as the first round ends.

Round 2

The two touch gloves and Bermudez presses forward, causing Kenney to circle away and throw a wild spinning wheel kick that is several feet away from landing. Bermudez presses the Rise Combat Sports fighter against the cage, and pulls him to the canvas. In the ensuing scramble, Kenney winds up taking the top position, outhustling the submission specialist. Kenney sits up and circles around, taking Bermudez' back. Kenney tries for a rear-naked choke attempt and Bermudez escapes, but it was very close. After the attempt, Kenney takes side of Bermudez and lands a few powerful left hands. In the process, Kenney takes Bermudez' back again, but Bermudez escapes and cracks Kenney when they get back to their feet. Bermudez pours on the pressure and leads Kenney against the fence until he drags Kenney down. Bermudez attempts a choke of his own, but Kenney pulls out and snatches top position to end the round.

Round 3

Kenney opens up with a leg kick, but Bermudez is stalking Kenney down. Kenney stands Bermudez up with a right-left combination that catches Bermudez off-guard, but Bermudez wears it well and fires back. After eating a few powerful shots, Kenney clinches up the taller man and tries to land a few knees. Aiming to land a trip takedown, Kenney gets it to the ground but Bermudez reverses the position and ends up in side control. From his back, Kenney attempts to pull for an arm-triangle choke, but also could be trying to stall the action to get a referee standup. Bermudez avoids it easily and hops over to the other size of Kenney, as he tries to secure a guillotine. Kenney is in danger of the submission while Bermudez advances position, but Kenney pops his head out. Bermudez stays heavy on top as Kenney tries to escape as best he can, but he is stuck on his back. Kenney tries to sweep Bermudez, and right before pulling it off Bermudez takes it back and this close fight ends with Bermudez on top.

Round 1

Moving up to the lightweight division, Giagos (17-7, 3-3 UFC) clashes with Klose (10-1-1, 4-1 UFC). In charge of this fight is referee George Allen. Giagos opens up with a lot of movement, trying to fake his way into strikes but misses on his first attempt. Klose fires off a solid right body kick, and Giagos returns with a loud body kick of his own. The two go kick for kick, and Giagos cracks Klose with a left hand that backs off the aggressive fighter from Michigan briefly. Giagos clinches up with Klose, and with his back against the fence Klose scores a few effective knees to the body. Klose appears to be landing the more effective strikes despite his back pressed on the cage, and Giagos breaks away and backs off. Giagos scores a slapping leg kick and the two clinch again, and this time Giagos knees Klose to the body a few times. The two break away again as Giagos lands a one-two and dodges the counter. Frequently switching his stances, Giagos has Klose a little confused as he lands a hard punch to Klose's body. Klose closes in and goes for the clinch, and when the 10-second clapper sounds the two swing wildly. Right before the bell sounds, Klose wings and tags Giagos with a right hook and the round ends.

Round 2

The round opens with Giagos stinging Klose with a knee, but and both men bite down on their mouthpiece and swing wildly. As Klose throws a body kick, Giagos scores an unexpected takedown. After a few unsuccessful ground strikes, the two get to their feet as Giagos presses the pace and leans in for the clinch. Giagos tries for another takedown, and after evading a guillotine attempt Giagos gets down the MMA Lab export and takes the fight to the canvas. Giagos quickly advances position, and takes side control before snatching up the back of Klose. Giagos almost sinks in a rear-naked choke, and after a few phantom taps, Klose somehow manages to escape. Giagos remains on Klose's back and lands a few punches before trying to switch to an armbar, and Klose uses that to escape and separate. In an exchange, Giagos clips Klose with a right hand, but Klose races forward and throws several huge uppercuts that cause Giagos to lean against the cage and fall to the canvas. Giagos survives and stands up, but Klose trips Giagos back down and lands a kick to the ribs of his downed foe, as well as a few emphatic hammerfists for good measure. Klose stands back up and lands some long punches to both the body and head. Klose takes side control with about 20 seconds left in the round, and he uses that position to drop some big elbows that slice up the face of Giagos. The round ends, and Giagos is hurt badly and appears visibly tired.

Round 3

Prior to the start of the last round, the doctor checks on the cut above Giagos' eye. When cleared, the round begins, and Klose comes in like a bat out of hell, throwing hard and backing off Giagos. With a strong leg kick, Klose kicks out the lead leg of Giagos, but Giagos stands back up. Giagos attempts another body kick and Klose catches it and tries for a takedown, but Giagos stands up and wings a right hand. Klose is bullying Giagos against the fence, walking down his opponent as he tries to find a knockout blow. When Giagos connects with a one-two, Klose walks right through it. Klose initiates the clinch again and lands some effective strikes, but Giagos gets out of it and stands up Klose with a few right hands. Klose grabs a clinch in the center of the cage again and lands some strong uppercuts, and Giagos breaks free once more. They trade again, and Klose tries to clinch the fight up once more, while landing some proverbial "old school" foot stomps that cause Giagos to turn out and get back to the center of the cage. Giagos scores with a body kick, and swings wide with hooks as Klose tries to take the fight back to the ground. Klose scoops Giagos up and slams Giagos to the canvas loudly by dropping him backwards. Giagos attempts an armbar but cannot secure it, although he does use the leverage to get back up again. With 10 seconds left, Giagos scores a big right hand that bounces Klose off the cage, and the two exhausted fighters swing a few more times until the horn signals an end to this wild fight.

Round 1

Next up at bantamweight, Sandhagen (11-1, 4-0 UFC) looks to continue his meteoric rise when he faces perennial contender Assuncao (27-6, 11-3 UFC). The referee for this dark horse "Fight of the Night" candidate is Frank Trigg. We begin the fight with a few kicks traded by each man. Sandhagen tries to use his reach to keep Assuncao backed off, and after a few strikes from Sandhagen, Assuncao fires back with a salvo and just misses. Sandhagen advances, and Assuncao counters with a solid left hand. Assuncao scores a body kick, as Sandhagen maintains the pressure on the Brazilian. Leading with a pawing left hand, Sandhagen ducks another right-left hook counter from Assuncao. Sandhagen scores a one-two that backs away Assuncao, as Assuncao shakes his head. Sandhagen cracks Assuncao with a big left hand to the body, and then slaps Assuncao's lead leg with a kick. With his back against the fence, Assuncao tries for a push kick to keep some distance, but the American presses relentlessly. When they break, Assuncao tries to capitalize on it with a left hand but it is blocked in time. Sandhagen stalks down Assuncao and lands a right hand, and then leaps in the air to partially score a flying knee on the chin of the Brazilian. The opening round comes to a close with a few half-hearted leg kicks from Sandhagen.

Round 2

The round immediately begins with a couple body kicks from Sandhagen, who starts right out with more of the pressure that likely won him the opening stanza. Sandhagen picks at Assuncao with distance while dodging and weaving the fierce counterpunches from the Brazilian. Pulling into a clinch, Sandhagen lifts up a few knees and they break with Assuncao swinging at nothing but air. A body kick from Sandhagen is caught, and Assuncao grabs Sandhagen and takes his back. Sandhagen tries to spin out and eventually does so, all while passing to half guard. In a scramble, Sandhagen unexpectedly takes Assuncao's back while trying to isolate Assuncao's left arm. Assuncao evades the attempt and the two roll about until Assuncao grabs Sandhagen's back again. Assuncao gets the fight to the canvas once more as Sandhagen pulls for a leg lock. Assuncao turns out of it and takes a strange position with Sandhagen's left arm and leg wrapped up. Sandhagen gets out of it and takes the full guard position before standing up. Assuncao tries to take the leg of Sandhagen, but the American pulls Assuncao back down in a very intriguing chess match full of positions that might not have official names. The second round ends with Sandhagen elbowing Assuncao in the posterior -- you read that correctly -- due to the nature of their positions.

Round 3

The final round starts with some leg kicks from Sandhagen, who continues to evade any significant counters from Assuncao. Sandhagen digs with a left hand to the body, and blocks a counter right hand from the Ascension MMA product. Sandhagen dodges a kick, lands a straight left, and then avoids the counter perfectly. Sandhagen pushes the pressure on Assuncao such that Assuncao is continually backed against the cage, and Assuncao tries to get out of it by vying for a takedown. He gets the American down momentarily, but Sandhagen gets up and continues to pressure Assuncao. Trading leg kicks, Assuncao is forced to back away until he pushes forward to try and take Sandhagen down again. Wrapping his arms around Sandhagen's waist, Assuncao slams Sandhagen down but Sandhagen springs right back up. Sandhagen gets the separation and advances with a jab and a flying knee that just misses. They two go back down to the floor, before getting up again. With both landing a few looping strikes in the waning seconds, the fight ends.

Round 1

To headline the ESPN prelim portion of UFC 241, we get a lightweight scrap between Smith (10-1, 2-0 UFC) and short notice debutant Worthy (14-6, 0-0 UFC), where Smith sits as an overwhelming -1000 favorite against his friend and former training partner. The third man inside the Octagon is referee Jason Herzog. Worthy starts off tentatively, feinting punches and faking kicks while trying to figure out his range. Heinisch starts off the fight incredibly fast, darting towards Brunson and attacking with a few strikes before scoring a head kick that nearly finishes the fight in the opening seconds. Brunson somehow survives by picking up Heinisch and trying to get the fight to the ground, but he is unable to do so. On the break, Brunson scores, and Heinisch throws a few leg kicks back to decent effect. Sneaking up another head kick attempt, Heinisch barely misses, as he chases Brunson down. Brunson knocks Heinisch backwards with a one-two, and the two take a moment to collect themselves after the action. Heinisch lands a body kick with his right leg, and then goes up high with his left leg to keep Brunson guessing. Heinisch shoots in for a takedown and Brunson staves it off, and Brunson tags Heinisch with a left for his efforts. Heinisch ducks down to throw an overhand left that Brunson evades, as Brunson lands an inadvertent groin strike that does not pause the fight. Brunson shoots in deep for a single leg and lifts Heinisch's leg up, and on one foot Heinisch unloads with a few punches that get the crowd amped up. Heinisch circles out and feints a few times to get Brunson to bite, until Brunson throws a head kick that skips off the side of Heinisch. The Factory X product attempts a looping uppercut that Brunson dodges and counters, and Brunson grabs hold of Heinisch and tries to throw him down. Heinisch keeps his balance and the horn sounds, ending this exciting round.

Round 2

Brunson tries to take advantage of that with a head kick that misses, and he falls to the floor, but Heinisch cannot get to him before Brunson stands up. Eating another couple body kicks, Heinisch tries to charge in and throw a looping right hand, but Brunson sees it coming and smoothly dodges it. Brunson stuffs another takedown, as Heinisch attempts a few more kicks as the second round ends. The crowd erupts into boos, but it is not because of the fight, but rather that former welterweight champ Colby Covington has entered the building.

The third round begins not with any specific exchanges, but with the entire crowd chanting "Colby sucks" before transforming into something more profane as Brunson scores an emphatic takedown. Heinisch gets back to his feet, initiating the clinch but in the process getting bullied against the cage wall. The two exchange a few sloppy strikes, and Brunson lands a sharp left hand that stuns Heinisch, followed by a few more. Heinisch shoots in for a distant takedown and gets stood up, only to try for a combination that ends with Brunson getting Heinisch down again. Heinisch pulls for a single leg while trying to get up, and does do, while flailing wildly and missing. A body kick from Brunson causes Heinisch to grimace, as his hands are down in front of the powerful striker from North Carolina. Heinisch leaps forward with a right hand, and eats a kick to the body while continuing to press forward. Brunson grabs a single leg and bails on it when realizing he will not land it. Heinisch is chasing Brunson around the cage with his hands at his side, as Brunson waves him on with 30 seconds remaining. Brunson circles away while landing effective jabs and avoiding the power strikes of Heinisch. The fight ends with both men exhausted.

The referee in charge of the Octagon is Herb Dean, who sees action for the first time tonight. Benitez starts off with a sharp combination, and Yusuff fires right back hard. Yusuff pops Benitez with a right hand that appears to have already cut the Mexican fighter less than 30 seconds in. Yusuff is stalking down Benitez, throwing hard to the body before one to the head. "Moggly" scores a loud leg kick that gives Yusuff pause, and Yusuff throws one back to even the score. A hard body kick from Benitez forces Yusuff to press forward, although "Super" continues to eat low kicks. Benitez counters a leg kick with a left hand, and then staggers Yusuff with another left hand that cuts open the Team Lloyd Irvin representative. Benitez presses forward and Yusuff scores over the top to back Benitez off. Benitez continues to utilize quick combinations that tag Yusuff, but Yusuff counters with a perfect huge right hook that drops Benitez. Not letting his opponent recover, Yusuff pours everything he has into the finish, in the form of constant fierce right hands while Benitez is on the canvas, forcing Dean to stop the fight. That was quite the battle for as long as it lasted, and chalk up one more victory for Nigerian-born fighters.

Round 1

Strap in for what could be an all-action throwdown next between explosive middleweights, as Romero (13-3, 9-2 UFC) tries to halt the momentum of the unbeaten Costa (12-0, 4-0 UFC). The two combine for 23 stoppages among their 25 wins, and the referee keeping a close eye on this one is Jason Herzog. Costa opens up with a body kick that Romero dodges, and then throws a low kick that is also short of the target. Romero tries to counter and causes Costa to counter, and then scores a head kick that Costa eats without issue. Romero tries for a takedown but Costa pops back up, and Costa backs Romero up against the cage and blasts him. Romero launches a right hand back that drops Costa, and when Costa recovers, he laughs. Romero stays on the outside to try to recover a little, while he sits on a counter. Costa whiffs on a right hand that nearly knocked over UFC President Dana White in the audience, and he continues to press the action. Romero cracks Costa with a left hand that Costa absorbs, and Costa scores a right hand to the body. Costa pours it on with a flurry to the Cuban's body, and Romero jumps forward with a flying knee that catches Costa flush on the chin. Costa grins, and then lands an unfortunate knee square on Romero's cup. Romero collapses to the canvas, but manages to climb his way back to his feet on the fence. We restart the action after a few minute break, and Romero slips while trying to throw a body kick. Costa scores an inside kick that makes Romero flinch, and the American Top Team standout fires a windmilling right hand that is just short of the mark. Costa pushes Romero down and lands some hard strikes, until Romero decides he has had enough and stands back up. The two trade power shots that would knock many lesser fighters out, and as Costa scores to the body, Romero comes back over the top with a counter. Costa continues to work the body, and Romero takes some deep breaths with 15 seconds left. Costa whips a spinning wheel kick that misses, and this insane round comes to a close as the horn sounds.

Round 2

The second round begins with Romero trying to stay light on his feet, circling around and landing a few light leg kicks. Costa swings for the bleachers and misses, but as he chains punches together he lands a few along with some hard right body kicks. Digging to the body, Costa snaps Romero's head back with a right-left combination. With Romero against the fence, he opens his mouth wide open goading Costa on, as Costa unleashes a flurry that does not show any major ill effects on Romero. The Cuban paws a few right jabs out that disrupt the movement of Costa and keep him from setting up his big power shots. The pace has slowed down significantly, as the two fighters realize that maybe they won't land the fabled "one-hitter quitter." Costa, still advancing, puts his hands on his hips before firing a combination that makes Romero stick his tongue out at the Brazilian. Costa rips another left hand to the body, and as Romero eats power shots from Costa, he opens his mouth wide open. Could this be a taunt, or is he sucking wind, or is it a potential jaw injury? Either way, he sticks his tongue out repeatedly, and sticks to landing short shots instead of huge winging punches. Romero ends the round with a takedown that scores right before the horn sounds.

Round 3

The third round starts more tentatively than the first two, as Romero stays on the outside with a few leg kicks before exploding with an uppercut that tags Costa. As the two close distance, Romero extends his fingers and lands an eye poke, causing Herzog to pause the action. Herzog warns both fighters about their respective fouls, and we are back in the action after a short break. Costa starts with a slapping leg kick, and then a two-punch combination that makes Romero smile. Costa repeatedly lands lunch right hands to the body, and Romero fires off a right-left hook combination that barely misses. Romero scores with a combination that makes the Brazilian smile and mimic Romero. As Romero advances, Costa beckons him on and Romero backs away. Costa puts his hands behind his back to taunt Romero after the Cuban cracks him on the chin. Romero pours on the pressure and Costa leans against the fence, as the two move towards the center of the cage with a minute left. A three-punch combination lands effectively on Costa, and Costa nails Romero with a head kick that barely makes him budge. With 15 seconds left, Romero lands an inside trip takedown, and Costa tries to reverse it and gets to his feet. This outstanding fight, and easy "Fight of the Night" contender, comes to a glorious end when Costa smacks Romero with a spinning back fist. The two embrace, and the crowd roars with approval as they hear the final bell.

The two taunt one another with their footwork, and Diaz presses forward again to land knees and left hands on Pettis against the fence. Diaz scores a knee to the body on the break, and follows up with another one-two that catches Pettis. As Diaz lunges forward, Pettis circles away, only for Diaz to push in for a takedown. Beltran stops the fight for a moment to check, and Diaz says "It's fine" and we continue. Pettis lands a two-punch combination punctuated by a left head kick that surprises Diaz, but Diaz crowds Pettis up against the fence again. The two trade powerful body shots, with a knee from Diaz and punches from Pettis. Diaz grabs the back of Pettis and lands a knee, but drags Pettis to the ground and ends in side control. Pettis throws his legs up to make Diaz cautious, and stands back up, but Diaz catches him with a knee while Pettis stands up. Diaz scores a strong elbow on Pettis' face, and then on the break fires one more. Diaz stings Pettis with some punches, and Pettis appears to be hurt and tired. Pettis tries to jump for a knee that does not land successfully, and Diaz continues to pour on the pressure. In an exchange, Pettis cuts Diaz above the eye that immediately starts to bleed. The two stand in front of each other and trade, with Diaz winning the final exchange of the round as the bell sounds.

Round 3

Diaz opens the round with immediate pressure, pushing Pettis against the fence as they brawl. Pettis tries to separate with a head kick, but it is blocked and Diaz pursues the man from Milwaukee. The Stockton native briefly goes after a triangle but is unsuccessful, and Pettis stands up as Diaz waves him on. Diaz slams a few elbows into the head of Pettis, and in the ensuing scramble, Pettis takes Diaz' back for a moment, before the positions reverse and Diaz finds his way to Pettis' back. Diaz tries to set up a rear-naked choke with seconds left, as Pettis spins out and ends up on top. Diaz attempts one last submission that Pettis steps over, and this intense fight will go to the scorecards.

Cormier grabs the clinch and tags Miocic with a right, and then does so once more. Cormier leaps forward to land a left, and then he shoots for a takedown. "DC" lifts Miocic up into the air, where he holds him for at least 15 seconds. He then slams Miocic down to the canvas, and advances to half guard while Miocic tries to escape and not give up his back. Miocic holds Cormier tight and defends well, getting back to full guard. "DC" lands a number of small, short punches to Miocic's body, enough to stay busy and keep the fight on the ground. Cormier sits up and lands a three-punch string, and Miocic partially lands an upkick that helps him get back to his knees. Cormier lands a series of left hammerfists that are doing damage to Miocic, and Miocic gets up and tries to go for a takedown of his own to end the round. The two jockey for position against the fence, and Miocic scores a series of jabs that irritate Cormier. Both land effectively on one another punch for punch, and Miocic sneaks in an uppercut and a few more jabs that irritate Cormier. Cormier closes in and pursues the clinch after eating a few more shots, and Miocic circles out and lands three punches. Cormier fires back hard, landing a few hooks and then an uppercut that snaps Miocic's head back. On the clinch, Miocic lands another short uppercut, and the two stand in front of each other and land at will. Miocic lands a solid body kick, and Cormier throws a head kick that lands flush. Cormier keeps his jab flowing, and as they trade, the round comes to a close.

As we enter the championship rounds, the two men are much more cautious to engage for the first 30 seconds, until Miocic lands a jab, leg kick and another jab. Miocic begins to pressure Cormier, until Cormier fires back, tagging Miocic with a leg kick and left hand. Miocic walks down "DC" to set up a combination with a low kick followed by a one-two, and none of those land significantly. Cormier lands another leg kick, and it is Miocic that continues to advance as he scores a left hand to the body. Standing in front of each other, Miocic scores several more lefts to the body of "DC," and these are causing Cormier to drop his hands little by little. Cormier fires back with right hand, and then tries to catch Miocic coming in for his body shots, but Miocic stays committed to that target. As Miocic presses the action, "DC" whiffs with an overhand left, and he charges forward and misses with a hook. Another destructive body shot cracks Cormier and hurts him badly, and Miocic follows it with a huge right hand, as "DC" backs away against the cage in serious jeopardy. Sensing the finish, Miocic unloads with everything he has, mixing it up to the body and the head and pummeling the American Kickboxing Academy champ. As Miocic pours it on, Cormier slumps against the cage and crumples to the canvas, and Dean has seen enough! Miocic is the champion again, and scores arguably the biggest win of his career all while avenging his last loss.
