Fans will be treated to see Makhachev (25-1) up against another proper lightweight after back-to-back title defenses over Alexander Volkanovski. While the first outing was quite close, Makhachev knocked out "The Great" with a brutal head kick in the first round of their short-notice rematch. The Russian fighter won the belt in 2022 by submitting Charles Oliveira with an arm-triangle choke.
Meanwhile, this may be the final shot at UFC gold for Poirier (30-8, 1 NC). "The Diamond" has won two of his last three fights, including an upset win over Benoit St. Denis. The Louisiana native previously came up short against both Charles Oliveira and Khabib Nurmagomedov, losing both title fights via rear-naked choke.
UFC 302 prelims begin on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT on ESPN+ and UFC Fight Pass before transitioning to ESPN+ and ESPN2 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The ESPN+ pay-per-view main card then takes over at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
