UFC 68 "The Uprising" Play-by-Play

Jason Gilliam vs. Jamie Varner (Pictures)
Round 1
Varner quickly gets a takedown from the clinch. Varner takes Gilliam's back after a quick scramble for position. He fights for the rear naked choke and secures a submission victory at the 1:34 mark of the first period. Varner wins by Submission (RNC).

Gleison Tibau vs. Jason Dent (Pictures)
Round 1
The fighters circle but both seem hesitant. Tibau clinches and throws Dent to the mat. Tibau got side-control off the takedown. Tibau working some some elbows to the head of Dent. Dent uses good leg work to get half-guard. Tibau is looking for an arm-triangle but it's not across the throat. He tries the hold for almost 2 mintues but Dent escapes. Referee Herb Dean stands up the fighters. Dent with a low kick. Tibau catches a leg and takes Dent back to the mat. Sherdog.com scores the first frame 10-9 for Tibau.

Round 2
Tibau scores a double-leg takedown. He works some ground and pound but Herb Dean stands them back up. Dent lands a low kick. Dent pieces together some nice punches. Just when it looked as if Dent was finding his range, Tibau scores another double. Tibau now getting some good shots in from the top position. Sherdog.com scores the second round 10-9 for Tibau.

Round 3
Another takedown for Tibau. The Brazilian punching well from the top but doesn't appear to be looking for a finish. Half way through the round, Herb Dean stands the fight up. Dent tries to mount some offense but slips while throwing a kick. Tibau dives into Dent's guard with a left hand. Tibau mounts and rides out the round in the dominant position. All three judges score the fight 30-27 for Gleison Tibau.

Jon Fitch (Pictures) vs. Luigi Fioravanti (Pictures)
Round 1
The fighters trade a few shots on the feet but nothing special lands. Fitch gets an inside trip and takes Luigi to the canvas. Fitch moves to side control. Fitch landing some good knees to the body. Fitch takes Luigi's back with only one hook in. Luigi gets back to half-guard. Luigi gets heels on hips and kicks Fitch off. Luigi lands a right hand. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Fitch.

Round 2
Luigi holds the fence to avoid a takedown but he gets slammed anyways. Luigi goes for a leg submission but Fitch takes his back after a crazy scramble. Fitch now has both hooks secured. He fights for and gets the victory via rear naked choke at 3:05 of the second round.

Rex Holman vs. Matt Hamill (Pictures)
Round 1
First three minutes displays some of the worst striking from both fighters you will ever see in the cage. Hamill is cut under his eye but it doesn't seem serious. Hollman looks completely gassed. Holman shoots but Hamill stuffs the takedown. Hamil takes down the fatigued fighter and not long after gets his back. Hamill unloads with a series of punches that forces the referee to halt the action at 4:00 of the first round.

Jason Lambert (Pictures) vs. Renato Sobral (Pictures)
Round 1
"Babalu" lands a low kick and a flurry of punches before rushing in and taking Lambert to the canvas. Sobral, working from Lambert's guard, lands a few punches to the head. Lambert is defending well from the bottom. Lambert gives up his back. "Babalu" secures his hooks and looks for the choke. "Babalu" rolls him over and sinks the hold under Lambert's throat. Lambert escapes to his feet. Lambert lands some stiff uppercuts from the clinch. Lambert drops Sobral with a right hand and pounces on his opponent. Sobral is saved by the bell. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Lambert.

Round 2
"Babalu" scores with some knees from the Thai-clinch. Lambert takes Sobral down with a double-leg. Sobral back to his feet. Lambert again takes Sobral down, but with a single-leg this time. The Californian lands some ground and pound. Sobral's right eye is sporting a mouse. Sobral goes high with his guard and looks for a triangle but Lambert has none of it. Lambert rubs his glove over Sobral's bleeding eye. After a standup, Lambert knocks out Sobral with a left hook counter at 3:26 of the second round. Sobral was trying to throw a knee when he got caught.

Matt Hughes (Pictures) vs. Chris Lytle (Pictures)
Round 1
Lytle comes out swinging and tags Hughes with a left hand. Hughes shoots in and takes Lytle down. Lytle has a tight guillotine choke but Hughes has one arm inside the hold. Lytle gives up the neck. Hughes is working from half-guard. Hughes passes and is now in side-control. One minute left in the round. Hughes drops down some elbows. Hughes fully secures an armbar but Lytle is saved by the bell. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Hughes.

Round 2
Hughes opens up the second round with a quick takedown. Hughes moves to side-control and lands an elbow. More elbows from Hughes. Lytle is cut. Hughes unloads more savage elbows. Hughes moves to mount. Lytle sweeps and takes the top position. Hughes goes for a Kimura. Lytle tries to counter with an armbar but Hughes sees it coming. Another round for Hughes, 10-9.

Round 3
Lytle tries to press the action with some punches but Hughes quickly takes him down with a double-leg. Hughes gets to side-control and isolates Lytle's left arm. The once rowdy crowd turns silent. The crowd grows impatient and starts to boo. Hughes lets go of the arm and unloads some punches. Hughes now has knee-on-belly position. 30 seconds remain in the fight. Hughes unsuccessfully tries an armbar before the horn sounds. Sherdog.com scores the fight 30-27 for Matt Hughes. All three judges agree, with scores of 30-27 x3.

Rich Franklin (Pictures) vs. Jason MacDonald (Pictures)
Round 1
Franklin cracks MacDonald with a left hand. MacDonald is working for a single against the cage. Franklin rocks MacDonald with a knee. The Canadian again clinches and works to get the fight to the ground. Franklin turns and pushes MacDonald against the cage. Knees to the body from Franklin. Franklin lands a looping right hand and a short left. MacDonald lands a leg kick. Franklin throws MacDonald down and unloads with punches. MacDonald defends and gets back to his feet. MacDonald takes Franklin down. Franklin sweeps before the round ends. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Franklin.

Round 2
Franklin lands a left hand. MacDonald grabs a single but Franklin hops and defends. MacDonald jumps on Franklin's back and drags him down. Franklin rolls and ends up in side-control in the top position. Franklin has knee-on-belly. The American mounts MacDonald. Franklin pounds away with lefts and rights. MacDonald turns his back to avoid punishment. Franklin is teeing off. MacDonald barely survives the round. Sherdog.com scores the frame 10-8 for Franklin. MacDonald's corner halts the fight between rounds. Rich Franklin wins by TKO (Corner stoppage).

Franklin says after the bout that he would like to fight Anderson Silva again. Silva enters the cage after the fight and is booed heavily by the Ohio crowd. Silva says nothing but kind words for the ex-champion. Franklin tells the crowd he will face Anderson Silva at a future UFC in Cincinnati.

Andrew McFedries vs. Martin Kampmann (Pictures)
Round 1
McFedries lands a left hand. And another. McFedries drops Kampmann with a right hand. Kampmann back to his feet. McFedries lands a few more punches. Kampmann answers with a takedown. Kampmann moves to side-control and lands a few elbows. Kampmann lands 2 very hard knees to the body. Kampmann jumps over McFedries to an arm-triangle and chokes the American out cold. Kampmann wins at 4:06 of the first stanza.

Tim Sylvia (Pictures) vs. Randy Couture (Pictures)

Randy Couture walks to the cage to Aerosmith's "Back in the Saddle." Tim Sylvia follows to the sounds of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks."

Round 1
Couture drops Sylvia with a right hand in the opening seconds. Couture takes Sylvia's back. Sylvia is hurt. Couture has both hooks in but the champion controls Randy's wrists. Couture hits the side of Sylvia's head and goes under the arm with an uppercut. Sylvia stays calm and defends well. Couture sinks the choke under Sylvia's chin but the champion continues to defend. Sherdog.com scores the first round 10-9 for Couture.

Round 2
Sylvia jabs but eats another Couture right hand. Randy clinches and tries to work for a takedown. Randy trips Sylvia and lands a hard shot to the body. Couture working from Sylvia's closed guard. Hard shots from Randy. The challenger is dominating with 2-min left in the round. Sylvia is bleeding from the nose. One minute left in the round. Couture pushes Sylvia against the fence and lads some strikes. Referee "Big" John McCarthy stands the fight up. Sylvia lands a left hand. Couture with another takedown as the bell sounds. 10-9 for Couture.

Round 3
Couture lands a left hand but eats a right. Couture lands a right hand. Randy looks like he is starting to tire. Randy lands another left hand. Couture is picking Sylvia apart on the feet. Sylvia lands his best shots of the fight, a left hand and a hard knee to the body. Couture now is holding his hands down from fatigue. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Couture.

Round 4
Randy shoots but Sylvia sprawls and defends. He tries again and gets the fight to the canvas. Couture working from Sylvia's guard. Randy Postures up and lands lefts to the champion's head. Referee "Big" John McCarthy stands the fighters back up. Couture lands a right hand. And another. Couture gets another takedown and quickly moves to side-control. Randy Mounts Sylvia and drops elbows downward. Sylvia escapes but eats a few more punches before the round ends. This fight is all Couture, 10-9.

Round 5
Again Randy takes the fight to the floor. Couture working from half-guard. Sylvia tries a leg submission but Couture defends and moves to side-control. Couture with some knees to the body. Total domination so far by the challenger with only 1:45 left in the bout. Couture mounts and unloads with punches. Sylvia escapes to his feet but is ripped back to the mat. Sherdog.com scores the bout 50-45 for Couture. The official scorecards read 50-45 x3 for the first five-time champion in the UFC, Randy Couture.
