UFC 96 Live Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com reports from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus with live play-by-play of UFC 96, which is headlined by Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Keith Jardine.

Aaron Riley vs. Shane Nelson
Round 1
Riley comes out kicking. Nelson catches one kick, but Riley gets his leg back. Riley stalking forward. He kicks, and Nelson counters with a right hand that drops Riley. Riley recovers quickly, but the fight is stopped. Riley immediately protests, and the crowd boos what looks to have been a very premature stoppage at 0:44.

Brandon Vera vs. Michael Patt
Round 1
Vera chops away with a low kick before launching a flurry of punches to open the bout. Another good leg kick exclamates a one-two. Vera, in a southpaw stance, lands a head kick that is partially blocked. Vera drops Patt with a hard leg kick then let's him back up. Vera picking Patt apart with just about everything he throws. He finishes another combo with another vicious leg kick. Brandon Vera takes the early lead 10-9.

Round 2
Patt tries to mount some offense to begin the second but Vera easily avoids his strikes. Vera then lands another buckling leg kick that leaves Patt teetering before he finishes the job with a follow up kick to Patt's left leg. Patt struggles to make it back to his feet when Vera refused to follow him down to the mat. Once he rose it was academic. Vera sealed the victory with another kick to Patt's lead leg, one he could not get back up from. Yves Lavigne halted the bout at 1:27 of the second round giving Vera the much needed win.

Tim Boetsch vs. Jason Brilz
Round 1
Boetsch attacks with uppercuts right off the bat while Brilz covers up. Brilz tries for a takedown but isn't close. He wants he fight on the ground and does get Boetsch down, but Boetsch gets up quickly. On the feet, Boetsch looks more comfortable throwing various strikes. Brilz is flat-footed. Boetsch jabbing and following with big uppercuts when Brilz covers up. 10-9 Boetsch.

Round 2
Brilz gets the fight where he needs it -- on the ground. He takes side control and works short elbows to the face and knees to the body. Boetsch tries to roll out, but Brilz controls him well. Brilz is still on top, punching to the body. He tries a guillotine with the arm in, but Boetsch escapes and gets to his feet. 10-9 Brilz.

Round 3
Brilz closes the distance again to start the round, but he can't get a takedown. Still the threat of a takedown has slowed Boetsch's striking. Brilz shoots again and a scramble ensues. Brilz wins the scramble and goes to Boetsch's back. He doesn't mount much offense, but he's in control. Boetsch breaks away, but he's tired and Brilz nullifies the standup by grabbing a single-leg for another takedown. Brilz moves to side mount and mount, where he punches and cuts Boetsch for a strong finish. 10-9 Brilz. Official scores: 29-28 three times for Brilz.

Kendall Grove vs. Jason Day
Round 1
Day rushes out and attacks backing Grove up. Grove throws a wayward head kick. Day continues to mount the attack right up until he eats a straight right hand on the back end of a one-two. Day cascaded backwards on the mat where Grove followed with elbows until Referee Rick Fike came to a stiff Day's rescue at 1:32 of the opening frame.

Tamdan McCrory vs. Ryan Madigan
Round 1
McCrory throws a high kick. Madigan blocks it, but McCrory scoops up a leg. Madigan tries to stay on his feet, but McCrory trips him down. On he ground, McCrory passes to side control. Madigan gets guard back. McCrory postures up and lands a right. McCrory passes again and goes to mount, clearly superior on the mat. McCrory attempts to lock up a triangle from mount. It doesn't work, but he begins pounding on Madigan until referee Yves Lavigne stops it at 3:35.

Gray Maynard vs. Jim Miller
Round 1
A Maynard right cross scores first against the stalking southpaw Miller. A leg kick lands for Miller, and allows him to push forward into the clinch. Maynard lands two stiff knees to the body before they disengage. Miller continues to chase down Maynard, but fails to land. Maynard lands a stiff right cross, and two sharp hooks to the body for the best contact of the bout. Miller responds with a mean left kick to the body. Miller drops levels for a low single, but Maynard defends expertly on one leg, hammerfisting Miller in the head while he remains upright in a brilliant display of takedown defense. A bloodied Miller continues to press the single leg to no avail. Maynard breaks away with 90 seconds left in the round. Miller's nose is bloodied and there is mild swelling around his eyes. Neither fighter can connect with rushing two- and three-punch combinations. A wild lead uppercut from Miller lets Maynard score an easy right cross, and a botched Superman punch attempt at the end of the first round lets Maynard put a stiff hook on Miller's face in a great opening round for "The Bully."

Round 2
Miller begins the round, pushing forward once again. Maynard comes forward with a slapping right hook which is blocked. Stiff leg kick lands for Miller. A hard inside leg kick lands for Miller, and referee Dan Miragliotta tells him to watch the groin. Maynard wades forward, and lands two out of three hooks to the body to Miller. Another inside leg kick from Miller forces Maynard to adjust his cup, and Miragliotta warns him that another low kick will result in a point deduction. A head kick is blocked by Maynard. Maynard throws two heavy 1-2 combos, neither of which lands. Miller drops for another low single, and after Maynard defends, Miller attempts to pull guard, but "The Bully" stands back up, and they reset standing. A body kick by Miller is blocked, and Maynard cuts him off with another clean right cross. Two soft leg kicks by Miller, who is then caught with a grazing Maynard hook. Maynard lands a hard right hook to the body. Both flurry in the last 10 seconds with neither landing.

Round 3
Maynard blocks a one-two combination from Miller. A right hook, left hook to the body, right cross from Maynard is entirely blocked by Miller. A restless Columbus crowd boos as the output of each fighter decreases. Maynard with a short right hand, and Miller returns with a solid kick to the body, as his corner begs him for more of the same. Miller rushes for a shot, but Maynard easily defends and shrugs him off. Maynard jabs, and shoots for a takedown of his own. He pinches Miller's knees, and slams him to the mat. Stacked against the fence, Miller dives for a kneebar, and attempts to spin out of his own attempt in order to get top position, but Maynard gets to his feet and doesn't allow the New Jersey native to get on top. Another low Miller single is met with great defense from Maynard, who pancakes him hard on the mat. Maynard gets a front headlock, stopping Miller from pulling guard. As Maynard steps away to stand, Miller dives for his heel, and Maynard exhibits more brilliant takedown defense. As Miller pulls guard, Maynard dropps some hard left hands inside a loose, weak guard form Miller, who is badly fatigued after his failed takedowns. Maynard stands back up with 20 seconds to spare, as Miller walks him down with no offense until the horn sounds. A dominant performance for the former Michigan State Spartan wrestler.

30-27 scores all around officially, giving Maynard the win.

Matt Hamill vs. Mark Munoz
Round 1
Hamill quickly pressing forward, and thwarts a single-leg attempt from Munoz. An inside leg kick for Hamill lands, and he follows forward with an awkward barrage of punches which force Munoz to shoot a single. He nearly gets Hamill to the mat, but Hamill is able to regain his balance and pancake the former Oklahoma State wrestler and get back to his feet. A left hook to the body lands solid for Munoz. Munoz loading up with right hooks which are blocked by Hamill. Munoz puts a left hook to the body of Hamill, who walks him down, and lands with another awkward smattering of punches, punctuated with a stiff right cross, the best punch of the fight. Right cross lands for Hamill as Munoz come forward. Munoz swims to the clinch, but a left hook is largely blocked. Hamill again traps Munoz on the fence and lands two hooks as Munoz attempts to weave away. As Munoz strafes along the fence, Hamill launches a right roundhouse kick that figuratively decapitates Munoz, crumpling him against the cage, and forcing referee Dan Miragliotta to rescue Munoz at 3:53 of the first round. Munoz is out cold, and remains down following the stoppage. Munoz was down for several minutes, but eventually walked out of the Octagon under his own power wearing a neck brace.

Pete Sell vs. Matt Brown
Round 1
A Matt Brown head kick is blocked to start. Brown lands a superman punch, and the lands another superman punch. Sell looks hurt, and goes down on a Brown left-right combo. There is an awkward moment as Sell topples over, as Brown thinks the fight is over, but referee Yves Lavigne implores, "Go go go go!" Brown dives on Sell, dropping with a series of knees. Sell holds on feebly to a single leg, until Brown gets back to his feet. Brown continues to land punches and kicks all over Sell, who eventually just falls over as Brown pushes him away. An incredulous Brown, who is in disbelief the fight isn't over yet, lands two right hands that bobble Sell's head on the mat, forcing Lavigne to stop the truly bizarre beatdown at 1:32 of the first round.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Shane Carwin
Round 1
Carwin comes forward first, throwing punches ,but Gonzaga circlesaway. Gonzaga lands two hard right crosses, and Carwin clinches up, badly rocked. A foot sweep against the fence but Carwin on his back. Carwin gets full guard after starting in half, and stands up against the fence nicely. Gonzaga lands a right hand, and as he to throw a jab-cross, Carwin lands a short right hook that collapses Gonzaga. Carwin dives on Gonzaga, swinging hammerfists on his downed foe until Dan Miragliotta steps in at 1:09, giving Carwin the quick comeback KO.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Keith Jardine
Round 1
Rampage walks straight across the cage, and ties up with Jardine, pushing him to the cage. The two each have over-unders in the clinch. Yves Lavigne quickly breaks the two after they exchange weak knees. Jardine rushes in with a chopping right hook which is blocked. Jardine lands his first leg kick to the lead leg of Jackson. Jardine on the perimeter of the cage, launching short punching attacks that Rampage blocks. A one-two from Jardine lets Rampage step inside and clinch up. Jardine drops, and works for a single leg that Rampage powers out of with an underhook. Rampage looking to duck under and throw a hook, but Jardine is able to step inside and tie him up. A jab and looping right from Jardine graze Rampage. Jardine drops in another lead leg kick. A right cross grazes Jardine and wobbles him momentarily. A Jardine body kick is caught ,but Jardine escapes before Rampage lands. A Rampage uppercut lands when Jardine steps in, and Jardine quickly circles away to escape Jackson's offense. A soft Jardine teep lands. Rampage lands a right cross, and lands a left cross chasing Jardine across the cage.

Round 2
A soft leg kick lands for Jardine. Jackson lands a harder leg kick of his own to Jardine's lead leg. Jackson grazes with a left hook, but misses the right hook follow. A lunging Jardine kick is blocked by Jackson. Jardine a mild leg kick coming forward, but Rampage pushes him away. Jardine with a leg kick and a left cross. Jardine lands a leg kick, and Rampage lands a left hook. Jackson pushes forward, and lands a bigger left hook that deposits Jardine on the mat. Jackson follows him to the mat, flurrying with punches. Jardine scrambles to his feet, but his left eye has begun to swell as he absorbs more punches from Jackson. Jardine appears fatigued, as Jackson changes levels and easily takes him to the mat. Jardine is able to escape from the bottom of side control and get to his feet before Jackson can do any damage. Jardine's hands are now down on his hips as he takes the center of the cage. A Jardine kick catches Jackson square between the legs, as referee Yves Lavigne halts it momentarily before Rampage regathers. Jardine lands an uppercut that puts Rampage on his heels, and follows through with a barrage of hooks that put Jackson in momentary danger. Jackson lands a left hook on Jardine. A strong right cross counter lands for Rampage, who pushes Jardine back to the fence and clinches up to end the seesaw round.

Round 3
A stiff leg kick from Jardine, who evades a two-hook combo from Jackson. Rampage with a soft body kick as Jardine lands a straight right. Rampage ducks under a Jardine combination, and gets an easy double-leg takedown. Jardine uses an underhook to stand-up from half guard, and Jackson pushes him to the fence, missing with an uppercut before disengaging. Two mild leg kicks from Jardine land, and a third is met with a tired right cross from Jackson. An awkward right cross lands for Jardine. Jackson looking to land his left hook in winging exchanges, but unsuccessful thus far. Jackson reels Jardine momentarily with a counter right cross but can't follow up. Jardine with a lazy double-leg attempt, but Jackson easily stuffs it, and turns him into the cage. Referee Yves Lavigne breaks them apart with just under a minute to spare. A Jackson right cross lands, and he lands three left hooks in wild, winging exchanges. A soft Jardine right hook lands. Two head kicks from Jardine are blocked by a tired Jackson. With less than five seconds to spare, Jackson parries a lazy cross from Jardine, and lands a left-right combo that puts Jardine on the mat, clinging to a single leg as the round ends.
