Niko Price has displayed a penchant for finishing during his Ultimate Fighting Championship tenure, and his latest piece of work made him $50,000 richer.
Price received a “Performance of the Night” bonus for his upkick knockout of James Vick in a featured welterweight clash at UFC Fight Night 161 in Tampa, Fla., on Saturday night. Vick appeared to have gained some momentum after assuming top position in the first frame, but as he attempted to drop some standing-to-ground punches, Price knocked him unconscious with a heel to the chin at the 1:44 mark of the period. It was only the second upkick KO in the history of the Las Vegas-based promotion.
Meanwhile, Cub Swanson and Kron Gracie garnered “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their three-round featherweight scrap in the evening’s co-main event. While Swanson punished his foe with strikes to the head and body throughout the contest, Gracie continued to march forward until the final horn sounded. However, it was Swanson who emerged with a clear-cut decision victory.
Finally, Marlon Vera captured the card’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check for his stoppage of Andre Ewell in a preliminary bantamweight matchup. Vera set the wheels in motion for his victory in Round 3, when he used a guillotine attempt to take top position and finished the contest with a brutal series of punches and elbows.
