Veronica Macedo vs. Bea Malecki

Round 1

Kicking off this unusual crowdless Fight Night -- it is on ESPN as well as ESPN+, be advised -- is a battle in the women’s bantamweight division. In the only fight of the night without a Brazilian, Venezuela’s Macedo (6-3-1, 1-3 UFC) takes on the significantly larger Malecki (3-0, 1-0 UFC) from Sweden, and our referee for this opening bout is Mike Beltran. There is no touch of gloves, as Malecki opens with a body kick but is countered by Macedo. Despite a 10-inch reach disadvantage, Macedo is landing combinations on her taller, rangier opponent. As Malecki stalks her opponent down, Macedo clips her coming in with a right. The Venezuelan backs off, throws a body kick and then chains it with a spinning back kick. The two clash together, and after Macedo lands punches, Malecki is already looking marked up. Macedo continues to land punches, and the two trade kicks while Macedo drifts out of the way. Macedo lands another right hand, and darts back before Malecki can score a counter. Two straight punches land from Malecki, but Macedo does not appear irritated. “Bad News Barbie” throws up a high kick, and Macedo blocks it and tumbles to the canvas. She pops back up before the Swede can do anything from the advantageous position, and Malecki tries to aim another high kick but is well shy of the mark. Macedo loads up on punches, flailing away with her right hand. She starts a combination off with a head kick that is blocked, and she chases after her adversary with punches. Both sting one another with left hands, and then simultaneously nail each other in the torsos with front kicks that push them both back. Malecki loads up on a few body kicks, and Macedo is slowing down already as she tries to pour it on but her punches are getting looser. Macedo ducks down to throw a few looping left hands, but she comes up short, and Malecki comes back over the top with a right. The round ends.

Round 2

Macedo races out of her corner to throw a salvo of punches at her foe. She chains combinations together, forcing Malecki to backpedal. The two come together, and Macedo falls to her back after a kick. Although Malecki steps atop her to try to deliver some ground-and-pound, Macedo springs back up and gets out of danger. The two trade heavy punches, while Macedo is swinging more heavily while Malecki sticks her with long punches. Again Macedo rushes in, and Malecki bulldozes her over and pushes Macedo down on the ground. The Swede lands in mount, and starts to rain down punches and elbows. Unconcerned with the strikes, Macedo sneaks out the back door and stands back up. Macedo is swinging with all she has left, and the punches are becoming more labored and slow. Macedo shoots for a takedown, and Malecki pushes her over. “Bad News Barbie” takes side control and hammers down with some nasty elbows, but Macedo scrambles her way out of a bad position. Malecki stands up, and then slams her in the face with a punch. Macedo defends herself well enough, but she is a spent force with about 80 seconds left in the round. Malecki backs away, looking to land kicks, and Beltran allows Macedo to stand. Macedo keeps throwing bungalows, but they are having less of an impact when they do manage to land as Malecki laughs in her face. Macedo connects with a spinning back fist, and Malecki shrugs it off and stuffs a takedown that follows from Macedo. The Swede unloads a quick barrage of hammerfists, but Macedo gets to her feet to conclude the round.

Round 3

The two stride towards one another and stand in the center of the cage and trade. Macedo tries to change levels for a takedown, but Malecki stuffs it and lets Macedo get back up. Several low-percentage strikes fall well short of the mark, and Macedo falls to her back and Malecki chases her down with a heavy hammerfist. She gets back up once more, and then tries to shoot in for a takedown but is nowhere near landing it so she falls to her back. Malecki stands back and smiles, allowing Macedo to return to a standing position. Macedo is still swinging wildly with punches, and Malecki times her with a knee to the body. Macedo rushes down to pursue a single leg takedown, and it is quite unsuccessful as Malecki bowls her over and lands in side control. Macedo is in the danger zone now, and Malecki ties her opponent’s arm up as she brings down a slew of punches and elbows. The Swede allows Macedo to stand back up after Macedo scrambles, and the two trade sloppy punches. The Venezuelan unsuccessfully pursues the takedown again and Malecki almost ignores her. Macedo gets up, and then nails Malecki with a few punches that make Malecki laugh. The technique is out the window for Macedo, with her hands by her side as she throws these home-run punches that are hitting mostly air. Malecki lands with a few kicks, but Macedo connects with a combination. Malecki nails her in the chin with a knee and falls over, so Macedo chases her down but cannot keep her grounded. They stand, and then separate and slug it out. Both are winging looping power punches and are somehow all landing, and the two keep taking shots. They are swangin’ and bangin’ in a way that would make Derrick Lewis proud, and Malecki lands a few knees while Macedo is content to throw wild hooks until this entertaining round comes to an end. This last round, and the fight as a whole, may be a close one.

Bruno Silva vs. David Dvorak

Round 1

Moving down to flyweight, Silva (10-4-2, 0-1 UFC) tries to put Brazil on the board today against the debuting Czech prospect Dvorak (17-3, 0-0 UFC). Serving as the referee is Julio Catarino, and a touch of gloves kicks off this contest. Silva begins the bout by whiffing on a low kick, while Dvorak is similarly short with a jab. Silva times it with a low kick after changing stances, and then races in and is tagged with a jab while faking a spin. When Silva scores a low kick, Dvorak comes over the top with a left that marks up Silva’s eye immediately. The two load up and come together, and they do not gauge the distance correctly as they clash bodies together so they miss their punches. They do again, and this time Silva lands a left on the break. The Czech fighter takes a kick and then a punch from Silva, and eats a spinning back kick flush without any issue. Silva rushes in and the two clash heads, so when he backs away, Dvorak lands a few punches on the break. Silva shoots in and gets stuffed, so Dvorak makes him pay with some heavy punches. “The Undertaker” scores a heavy body kick, forcing Silva to consider a takedown, but Dvorak shucks it off and we return to the center of the cage. Silva closes the distance and Dvorak greets him on the way in with a few quick punches, leading Silva to back off. The Brazilian stings Dvorak with a right hand in an exchange, and cracks him on the chin with a front kick. Dvorak stumbles and is in a bad way, allowing Silva to crash forward and hit the takedown by practically bull rushing Dvorak over. Silva passes to half guard, but Dvorak protects himself from worse position by backing himself against the fence. Silva chains together a few punches to conclude the round, possibly stealing it back.

Round 2

The two men both open up with front kicks to the body, and as Dvorak goes low with a kick, Silva considers taking a takedown. Dvorak fights it off and throws a body kick, before landing another that draws a reaction from the Brazilian. “The Undertaker” is pushing the pace now, and stuffs a quick takedown from Silva followed by some short knees up the middle. Silva rushes in, intent on landing a takedown, and Dvorak shoves him away. Silva tries to emulate the success of the previous round with a big front kick to the face, but Dvorak ducks out of the way. The Czech fighter stuffs another takedown, standing Silva up and landing a few punches on the way out. Silva spins himself into a fury as he misses with a spinning back fist, so Dvorak counters the momentum by scoring a front kick to the breadbasket. Silva lands a few punches that Dvorak shrugs off, and Dvorak loads up with a right hand and then a body kick. Silva returns fire with the similar combination, but only lands the kick. Dvorak commits to the body kick again, and this time Silva catches it and takes Dvorak down. Dvorak scrambles and reverses position, landing on top where he takes half guard while trying to smack him with elbows. The action stalls as Dvorak is unable to get punches off, but finally pulls his arm free to drop down two short elbows. Silva times the offense to shove Dvorak off of him, and the two trade quick punches until Dvorak leaps in the air with a flying knee. The knee glances off the target, and Silva clinches him up to ride out the remainder of the round against the cage wall.

Round 3

They touch gloves to clock in the final round, and Silva is the first to score in the round by thumping the body with a kick. Dvorak comes up short with an overhand left, while Silva aims at the legs with a few kicks. Dvorak nearly kicks the leg out, thereby forcing Silva to miss with a booming right hook. Silva tries to land a few more one-hitter quitters, and Dvorak is out of range so Silva changes tactics to pursue a takedown. He hits it, and immediately circles around to take Dvorak’s back. Silva tries to get his hooks in, but “The Undertaker” does not linger in the position as he spins about and gets on top. Silva kicks his way out of the position, and this wild exchange leads to the two back on the feet. They jab their way in, and Dvorak chains together a few punches ending with a right. They both target the body, and Dvorak lifts up a powerful knee and then a kick that Silva absorbs. Dvorak tags him with a left, and Silva is a standing target as Dvorak lands a few more punches and a kick right down the middle. They come together, and Dvorak scores a few knees before Silva has to push him away after eating them. Three solid punches knock the head back of Silva, but the Brazilian composes himself and shoots in for a takedown. He gets stuffed, but nails Dvorak on the break with a huge right hand. These guys are swinging ferociously with one minute left, and both score big hooks. A left from Dvorak hurts Silva, who appears stunned. He shakes out of it, and throws a few body kick but “Bulldog” is gassed. Dvorak nearly lands his own takedown, but they stay standing and clinch up. They throw wildly, with Dvorak intent on driving knees home while Silva is winging hooks in the clinch. The round ends, and again we may have a close one on our hands. Silva sports some mighty sunglasses with spikes covering them as we get to the official decision.

Round 1

Staying at flyweight but moving over to the women’s side of the equation, Moroz (9-3, 4-3 UFC) will try to hand Bueno Silva (5-0, 1-0 UFC) her first career defeat. The third woman in the Octagon for this scrap is referee Camila Albuquerque, and the two touch gloves to greet one another. Moroz looks for jabs and a body kick, but the Brazilian has low kicks in mind. Moroz lands a good jab but gets tagged to the body by a flush spinning back kick. Moroz falls backward, but comes right back in with several jabs. Bueno Silva scores a body kick, and the two clinch up allowing Bueno Silva to try to knee her on the jaw. Moroz is working the jab, and long punches while Bueno Silva taunts her and looks at her. The Ukrainian does not get bothered by her antics, working the body and head with a long stream of punches as she kiais with every blow. Moroz shoves her advancing opponent away with a push kick, and chains together several punches. Bueno Silva lands a few power shots, but Moroz is working her over with substantially higher volume. Bueno Silva clinches up and lands a knee, but spins around and cracks her with a spinning back elbow. Moroz is unfazed, and keeps working the low kicks and punches up top. As Bueno Silva crashes forward, she gets hit a few times, so the Brazilian throws a high kick that gets caught. Moroz catches it and shoves Bueno Silva down, where she lands in full guard while throwing punches. “The Iron Lady” scores a strong elbow to the body, and Bueno Silva keeps eating punches to the face while she tries to buck out of position. Moroz slashes down with an elbow, and Bueno Silva holds on tight to try to force a referee standup. One does not come, as Moroz breaks free and nails her with an elbow. The first frame concludes with Moroz staying busy on top.

Round 2

The two start up the round aggressively, with Moroz linking a few punches together before shooting in for a takedown. The Brazilian stuffs it and shoves Moroz against the cage, but Moroz lands a few strikes and ducks the spinning back elbow that comes on the break. Moroz works the lead leg with a few more kicks, and the damage on that calf is starting to mount. Bueno Silva scores a heavy head kick, and Moroz gathers her thoughts while peppering Bueno Silva on the outside. “Sheetara” is swinging wildly, and connects with a few punches but Moroz largely evades the more dangerous strikes. They clinch up, so Bueno Silva circles around to try to take Moroz’ back, but Moroz breaks free and again evades that spinning back elbow attempt. Bueno Silva eats several punches and fires back much more heavily with a two-punch combination that backs off Moroz. Bueno Silva muscles her opponent to the fence, and nearly lands a trip but falls for her back again. The Brazilian gives up half guard quickly, as Moroz now prefers to advance position instead of posturing up on full guard like the previous round. Moroz stays heavy on top as if to set up an arm-triangle choke, but instead pulls her arm free and slams down a vicious elbow. Bueno Silva ties her up for a moment, but the Ukrainian yanks her arms out and starts to mark up Bueno Silva with a slew of heavy elbows. Moroz continues the grind, and starts to put it on Bueno Silva with more elbows from on top. She continues to rain down elbows until we hear the horn.

Round 3

The last round commences with a body kick from “The Iron Lady,” and we can see Bueno Silva wearing it already. Moroz strings together a quick combination and backs off before a counter can follow from her opponent. Moroz lands two solid body punches, but Bueno Silva fires back with a body kick. Bueno Silva lands a leg kick, and then looks for another but Moroz lifts her leg out of danger. Moroz is able to touch her with the jab, working the body and head indiscriminately before going after a single leg takedown. Bueno Silva does not fall for it, and pushes Moroz against the fence where she lands a few stiff knees. Bueno Silva aims at that low kick, and makes Moroz’ knees wobble. Bueno Silva lands a heavy right hand, and the legs are definitely in danger for Moroz. The Ukrainian regathers herself and shoots in from a great distance for a takedown, and Bueno Silva stuffs it and pushes her away. Bueno Silva cracks her with a nasty one-two, and Moroz is hurt. Bueno Silva repeats the combination and Moroz shoots in low. She get stuffed, and Bueno Silva is marching her down with looping punches while Moroz still appears to be compromised. Bueno Silva targets the body with a few more kicks, and Moroz is reacting to every strike that lands. The jabs of Moroz are unable to keep her opponent at bay any longer, as the Brazilian is stalking her down while trying to land huge power hooks. Moroz spins with a back fist and catches her opponent at the end of it, and Bueno Silva rocks her with a knee on the forehead that splits her open. Moroz is rocked as she tries to circle away and survive the assault. Bueno Silva pours it on with a few more right hands, and eats one from Moroz and smiles. Bueno Silva lands one final kick to the body, and remarkably, this fight may be even closer than the first two today.

Round 1

In this all-South American bantamweight tussle, former World Extreme Cagefighting staple and proud Brazilian Yahya (26-10, 1 NC; 11-4, 1 NC UFC) meets TUF Latin America Season 2 lightweight winner Barzola (16-5-1, 6-3 UFC) of Peru. The third man inside the Octagon is referee Julio Catarino. There is no glove touch, as Barzola takes the center of the cage briefly but backs away. Yahya walks him down with a front kick, and then a jump knee that Barzola pushes him away. The submission magician scores a superman punch, and then leaps at his opponent again with nothing coming. Yahya swings heavy, with a low kick and a looping left, before pulling guard. The Peruvian has no interest in this position, allowing Yahya to stand but gets careless. Yahya races forward to pursue a low single, and he uses the exchange to circle around and take Barzola’s back. The TUF winner fights his way out and gets free from danger, but eats a low kick on the break. Yahya clips him with a left, before coming in with a hard leg kick. It should mentioned that Yahya has never before scored a knockout in his career, as he lands a nasty right hand that staggers Barzola. Yahya capitalizes on this by hitting a single leg takedown, but Barzola is still sitting upright. Barzola tries to circle out, and Yahya nearly takes his back against the fence. Yahya slips off from the position, and falls to his back where he hunts for a straight kneebar on his back. Yahya is trying to sneak around to take Barzola’s back, but Barzola lands several powerful punches and elbows to the same spot on Yahya’s midsection. Barzola spins around to land a hammerfist, and as they scramble, Barzola lands in a north-south position but Yahya somehow spins about to take Barzola’s back. The Brazilian tries to take a single arm, and works Barzola back down. The round ends with Yahya on Barzola’s back.

Round 2

The second frame begins with Barzola looking to set the tempo with a jab and a low kick. Yahya leans in with a punch to the body, and backs off before getting countered. The Peruvian goes up with a kick, and chases after Yahya with punches. Yahya uses the momentum against his adversary, and hits a double leg takedown where he lands in full guard. The Brazilian starts to work some short ground-and-pound, but is more interested in passing guard. He takes half guard briefly, but “El Fuerte” fights him off and returns to full guard where he starts popping the ears of the man on top. Yahya powers through to take half guard again, while Barzola scoots his way towards the fence in hopes of walking his way up. The Peruvian gets full guard back, and gets to one knee against the fence while Yahya seeks out his back. Barzola is trying to stand up, while Yahya remains heavy and takes his back all the way around. Barzola is frustrated, and with all his might turns around to get out of the bad position. The two scramble around, and Barzola ends up on top in half guard. Barzola lands a few punches and fights off the wild grappling exchanges from the Brazilian. The two trade furious leather when we hear the 10-second clapper, and Barzola tags Yahya with a punch that nearly makes Yahya loopy. Yahya may have been saved by the bell here.

Round 3

Barzola begins the round with a flying knee, and fires a few looping punches that send Yahya off-balance. Yahya comes in for a takedown, and Barzola stuffs it while punishing him with hammerfists and elbows to the body. Perhaps unexpectedly, Barzola pulls for a kimura, and Yahya easily pulls his arm free but is stuck on his back. Yahya powers through to try to reverse position, and gets cut open with some ground-and-pound from Barzola. The Peruvian takes side control, and is starting to do work over a fatiguing Yahya. The Brazilian stands up and spins around to go for a takedown, but the former lightweight shoves him around and gets back on top in side control on the other side. Barzola tries to take Yahya’s back, but the Brazilian is slick as he scrambles about. Appearing far stronger with more in the tank, Barzola fights him off and gets Yahya down where he lands some punches. Yahya fights off to survive, and is taking some powerful elbows to the head, body and legs. Barzola goes for a kimura again, but it is thwarted as his hammerfists are more powerful. Barzola leans back to pull on a kneebar, and Yahya does not appear concerned as he counters with his own submission attempt to get free. “El Fuerte” stands up, but jumps down to land some powerful punches and elbows. Yahya circles around and nearly gives up his neck to a choke, but the Brazilian spins around to make it through the round. We could be heading towards a draw here, ladies and gentlemen.

Round 1

Two welterweights coming off of losses that snapped lengthy winning streaks are up next, as Zaleski dos Santos (21-6, 7-2 UFC) of Brazil goes toe-to-toe with Russia’s Kunchenko (20-1, 2-1 UFC). Referee Osiris Maia will be the Octagon steward for this contest. They touch gloves, and Kunchenko begins with a high kick. Zaleski dos Santos blocks it and fires one back. They both miss on subsequent kicks, and Kunchenko absorbs a leg kick while tries to walk down Zaleski dos Santos. Kunchenko catches a kick, counters, and barely blocks an overhand right. As Kunchenko commits to a low kick, Zaleski dos Santos fires a right hand over the top that is barely blocked. The two men clash together and swing wildly, and while Zaleski dos Santos lands, Kunchenko is able to get out before taking much damage. The Brazilian loads up with some punches, and counters Kunchenko while the Russian comes at him. The two are playing a dangerous chess match now, each leaning more on counters than starting offense on their own. Kunchenko slaps a leg kick home, and evades two looping punches honing in on him. They each block kicks coming at them, but Zaleski dos Santos appears to land the heavier one of the two. The Brazilian scores one to the leg, but does not follow it with anything as they cautiously jab at one another. Zaleski dos Santos catches a body kick, fires a right hand and rushes in to hit a takedown. The Russian muscles his way back up, partially aided by a fence grab, and Zaleski dos Santos starts working knees to the body while Kunchenko signals the referee for some intervention. Maia does not react, while Zaleski dos Santos keeps working short strikes. Eventually, after some stalling, Maia does step in, so they come back to the center of the cage and Zaleski dos Santos fires a high kick that is shy of the mark. The two clash legs in the air, and both whiff on punches as the tense round ends.

Round 2

The second round begins quickly with a heel kick to the groin as both kick at one another. Just as quickly, it pauses while the Russian shakes it out, and we are back on as Zaleski dos Santos throws a body kick at him quickly. The Brazilian is not concerned to throw kicks, and fires one high, another to the body and one low in rapid succession. His kicks are keeping Kunchenko away from him, but Kunchenko rushes in to hit a takedown. Zaleski dos Santos scrambles, both roll around and the Brazilian hunts for a kneebar. They both bail on the positions and stand up. As Zaleski dos Santos tries to kick at him, Kunchenko fires a hammer of a right hand that staggers Zaleski dos Santos for a moment. The Brazilian does a quick count of his teeth, and comes back forward with a blitz. Kunchenko catches him on the way in with a short right hand while Zaleski dos Santos goes after a takedown, but the Russian stuffs it quickly. Zaleski dos Santos grinds Kunchenko against the cage wall, and Kunchenko signals the referee for action. After a few seconds, Maia obliges and grants a separation. Zaleski dos Santos thanks the referee by landing a heavy low kick, and then lands a combination that backs off Kunchenko. The Russian comes back at him with a few winging punches, and Zaleski dos Santos kicks him mid-spin. Zaleski dos Santos fakes a spin, and then goes after a spinning heel kick but misses the mark. Kunchenko pushes the pace on him, walking him down and avoiding the spinning strikes while putting together some crisp punches. Kunchenko takes a leg kick, walks through it, and absorbs another. Zaleski dos Santos loads up on a low kick, and then a high kick, but Kunchenko shrugs it off as he launches a looping right. The Russian digs in a spinning back kick to the body, and Zaleski dos Santos fires back at him but misses. The Brazilian aims for a low kick, and Kunchenko misses with a spinning wheel kick as we end the round.

Round 3

The final round opens with a glove touch, and Zaleski dos Santos goes after the lead leg with a kick right out of the gate. He goes after another, and Kunchenko loads up on huge punches while Zaleski dos Santos spins for another spinning heel kick that misses. Zaleski dos Santos throws several more strikes that are all blocked, and on a counter, Kunchenko bloodies up the right eyebrow of his adversary. They clinch up, and Kunchenko starts ripping knees to the thigh. He breaks free and swings a spinning back elbow, but Zaleski dos Santos barely ducks in time. Zaleski dos Santos tries to keep Kunchenko at range, jabbing and pushing low kicks and front kicks out. Kunchenko throws a kick, and the Brazilian catches it and pushes Kunchenko down to the canvas. Zaleski dos Santos sits in full guard, and with his arms mostly tied up he cannot get off much offense. Instead, Kunchenko throws a few punches off his back. We hear the horn, and we have now gone the distance in five fights in a row.

Dropping down to the lowest weight class in the organization, a pair of submission-minded strawweights face off in Markos (10-7-1, 6-6-1 UFC) and Ribas (8-1, 2-0 UFC). Keeping tabs on this tilt will be referee Camila Albuquerque. The two are cautious to walk towards one another, and Markos paws out a jab but gets jabbed by the Brazilian to start things off. Ribas counters Markos coming in with a left hand that halts the movement of the Canadian. Markos swings with a big right hand, but Ribas dances out of the way without concern. “Quiet Storm” lands a loud leg kick, but ends up getting pushed to her back as Ribas lands on top. Markos locks her down while keeping full guard, but the Brazilian breaks posture and gets her neck out to land a few punches. Markos employs a body triangle off her back to lock up her opponent, but lets it go as Ribas passes to half guard. A few punches of come from Ribas to the body, but she pops right over to full mount. She traps the arm of Markos for a moment and fires down some heavy elbows, and she may have already bloodied the nose of Markos. The Canadian wrestles herself free and stands up with an underhook, and we are back to the feet. Ribas rips a spinning back kick to the body, and the kick hurts Markos and sends her backwards. Ribas fires one more, and following the spin she successfully lands a takedown. She lands in half guard, and wrests Ribas down to the floor before unloading some powerful elbows. Markos shows a significant hematoma under her right eye quickly, and Ribas is in three-quarter mount for a moment before Markos pulls her back to half guard. Ribas drops down a few more elbows to end the round emphatically as Markos stands up.

Round 2

The second round begins cautiously, as Markos tries to stay at range with a front kick. Ribas ignores it by coming at her with a few punches, before having a head kick blocked. Markos lands a few punches, and Ribas replies with an uppercut and then throws a spinning back kick that grazes off the midsection of the red-haired Canadian. The two clash together, and Markos is committing to her punches more as Ribas backs her off. The Brazilian scores a one-two, and Markos comes back at her but gets backed off by some straight punches from Ribas. Ribas again throws the spinning back kick, and Markos avoids it while throwing a leg kick back at her. The Brazilian crashes in and goes after a body lock takedown, but instead takes clinch position where she lands a few knees to the body and thigh. As they break, Ribas tags Markos with an elbow, but Markos is no worse for wear as she lands a few low kicks. Ribas scores a combination of punches, and Markos is keeping mostly to the leg kick. A right hand from Ribas connects flush on the side of Markos’ head, but she eats it and responds with a one-two. Ribas scores a heavy spinning back kick that again may have hurt Markos, but instead of pursuing the strikes, the Brazilian goes after a takedown. Markos fights it off while absorbing a series of knees. Markos cracks Ribas with an elbow, but Ribas comes back with a spinning back fist that glances off the chin. Ribas ends the round by landing a few more shots.

Round 3

Ribas is amped up to begin the last round, and lands a series of punches but gets caught with a right hand on the way in. Markos takes a low kick while returning fire with a left hand, and then scores a few jabs to keep the Brazilian away. The blood begins to flow from the nose of the Canadian, and Ribas comes at her with a right but gets taken down. As “Quiet Storm” rushes in, Ribas continues to roll with the position and secures armbar position. Ribas pulls for the submission, but Markos is able to wrest her arm free. We can see the blood flowing more heavily from Markos, which matches her hair. Markos tries to step over and take top control, but Ribas rolls out so Markos fishes for a heel hook. Ribas pulls her leg out and ends up in half guard, before wrenching for an Americana. The submission came out of nowhere, and Markos fights it off but gives up arm-triangle position. Ribas squeezes as she tries to pass to side position, and Markos turns to her side to defend the choke. The Canadian successfully gets her arm between that of her opponent, so she breaks out of the maneuver but is still on her back taking punches from a powerful Brazilian. Ribas continues to rain down punches and occasional elbows while looking to take full mount. Markos barely manages to keep her in three-quarter mount, but is eating nasty strikes and is bloodied up. Ribas pours it on with several more elbows, and Markos returns to half guard and may survive to the scorecards. The 10-second clapper leads to Ribas blasting her with more elbows, and as we hear the horn, a staggered Markos needs to be caught by a commission official as she is in a daze. That is six fights in a row to go the distance, but its outcome is not is any doubt. Although Brazilians started the night rough, they have now evened the score to 2-2-1 tonight.

Headlining the prelims is a major flyweight battle between two flyweights with sights on the vacant title, as Brazilian grappling phenom Formiga (23-6, 9-5 UFC) squares off against the convivial Moreno (16-5-1, 4-2-1 UFC). In charge of the cage is referee Eduardo Herdy, and the two are glad to touch gloves. Formiga opens with a low kick, and blocks a jab that comes at him but gets caught with a left. Moreno starts to work the jabs, and slips on the way in, allowing Formiga to jump guard and hunt for a guillotine choke. Moreno drops down to his knee and does not appear to be in great danger, and pops his head out. The action has stalled as Moreno is careful not to give up a limb or overextend himself, but he does land a single elbow. Formiga throws his legs up to push off and hunt for a triangle choke. He continues the transition into an armbar, an omoplata, and then another armbar, but Moreno rushes to escape quickly. Formiga pushes off with kicks, and Moreno lands a few downward punches while the Brazilian hunts for any sign of a submission attempt. Moreno stands up to land a few more punches, and Formiga again kicks off. Formiga lands a powerful upkick, and in the moment where Moreno is stunned, Formiga manages to sweep the leg, get Moreno down and take his back. After a wild scramble, Formiga is on top in half guard. Formiga is immediately in arm-triangle control position, while Moreno is calm and punches the body while flat on his back. Unexpectedly, Herdy steps in to take the position away, and the fight is now back on its feet. Formiga lands a spinning back kick up top, and Moreno hits a lightning-quick takedown before Formiga pops up and the round ends.

Round 2

The two begin the round with some power punches, and Formiga’s forehead is marked up. Formiga clinches up to land a takedown, and Moreno stomps the feet and pushes the Brazilian away. Moreno sticks him with the jab, and then taunts Formiga before trying to rush in and hit the same takedown he landed at the end of the previous stanza. He cannot land it, so he bails on it. Formiga throws a leg kick and then pushes off, and lands an inadvertent eye poke that halts the action. Moreno waves Formiga on, so the Brazilian shoots low for a single and gets Moreno down. The scrambles are incredibly fast as Formiga gets Moreno’s back briefly, but Moreno impressively picks him up and spins him around to slam him down. Now Moreno is on top in half guard, as Formiga attempts to reverse position but is stuck on his back for a moment. He gets back up, and Moreno blasts him in the head with a kick. The Brazilian is unfazed, and in the ensuing exchange Formiga nearly takes Moreno’s back and drags the Mexican down. Moreno keeps close to the fence to defend position, and Formiga pulls him away to take full back position. We see a lull in the action as Formiga holds on tight, but is unable to land any significant strikes or score a takedown. Formiga throws several knees to the thigh and posterior, and the close round concludes with Formiga in control.

We can see some swelling under the right eye of Moreno as the round begins, and the two touch gloves as Moreno mean mugs. Moreno tries to double up the jab and follow with a left hook, but he misses with each. Formiga feints on a takedown attempt and Moreno bites, but they back away and come together and swing furiously. Moreno cracks the Brazilian with a few punches, and Formiga lands with his own, but Formiga takes the worse of it and is no worse for wear. Formiga lands a low kick to the calf, and shoots in for a takedown but is easily stuffed. Moreno works the jab, and ends a combination with a right hook that grazes the chin. Formiga spins with a kick and falls short of the target, and they come together before Moreno unloads with a huge left hook that blows the hair back. Both throw hard punches and clinch up to avoid the damage, and in the scramble, Formiga drags the fight down and takes the back. Moreno scrambles wildly and breaks free, and the two are back on the feet almost immediately. Formiga evades and uppercut before countering with a left hook, and takes a jab from the Mexican. Formiga throws a spinning back fist that is blocked, and the Brazilian chains in with a takedown before taking the back. Moreno tries to scramble the same way, rolling around out of it, but this time Formiga is wise to it and lands on top. He immediately takes mount, and hunts for an arm-triangle choke while Moreno shrugs and tries to flail punches. Formiga stays heavy in mount, and rides out the round in the position to potentially steal the third as well as the fight itself. That is seven in a row as far as fights that go the full 15 minutes, and it is another close one.

The main card -- which is also on ESPN and simulcast on ESPN+ -- kicks off with a lightweight fight as between a fighter who holds the promotional record for wins in Brazil (12) in Trinaldo (24-7, 14-6 UFC) against Canadian Makdessi (17-6, 10-6 UFC). The overseer of the Octagon in this one will be referee Osiris Maia, and the two greet one another with a sporting touch of gloves. Trinaldo starts aggressively, stalking down the Canadian but not throwing. Makdessi lands a low kick, and Trinaldo fires a three-punch salvo his way. As Makdessi goes after another low kick, Trinaldo connects with a heavy leg kick. Trinaldo launches a high kick and a left hand, and Makdessi absorbs it while sticking to his low kick strategy. Makdessi hops in with a side kick, and then kicks the knee while Trinaldo walks him down. Trinaldo paws out his right hand, and Makdessi circles away before landing another side kick to the midsection. One more low kick for Makdessi leads to a chasing left hand from Trinaldo, who then goes to the body with a long left. Trinaldo fires his own leg kick, and Makdessi partially blocks it. The Brazilian follows the kick with a left that backs Makdessi away, but he does not land another of note. He whips another body kick to the stomach, and opts to throw a teep kick while Makdessi keeps kicking the leg. The power is severely in the corner of Trinaldo, while Makdessi is more interested in touching the leg and body with kicks. Trinaldo whiffs with a spinning wheel kick, and Makdessi has brief flashbacks of the time he met Lando Vannata. Trinaldo tries to paw his way in, and chases after Makdessi while missing with a big spinning back fist. Trinaldo checks a low kick, and lands a body kick before a punch forces Makdessi to fall backwards. Makdessi partially connects with one more side kick before we hear the horn blare.

Makdessi begins the second round with a head kick, and ducks a spinning wheel kick that comes his way. He lands a body kick, but Trinaldo fires back with one that appears far heavier. The advancement is firmly in the side of Makdessi for the first minute, and Trinaldo tries to unload with a high kick but Makdessi blocks it. As Trinaldo races in with punches, Makdessi clips him with a short punch on the way in, but it does not disrupt the combination. Trinaldo stings him with a right hand, and we can see some marking on the temple of the Canadian. Makdessi throws a body kick with one leg and low kick with the other, while circling away from the power of the Brazilian. Trinaldo bites down on his mouthpiece to throw a booming right, but Makdessi tags him while closing the distance. Makdessi slaps at him with a high body kick, and dances out of danger while Trinaldo is loading up with huge punches. He gets blocked but does connect with a body kick. The Brazilian fires up a high kick, and his foot slaps off the face of his opponent and Makdessi is no worse for wear. Makdessi continues to retreat, but keeps his kicking game going as Trinaldo tries to unload a bomb of a left hand. He glances one off the target, but the elusive Canadian is able to roll with most of the big shots coming his direction. Makdessi goes for a high kick and loses his balance, and as he falls over, Trinaldo nearly gets to his man. As Makdessi scrambles to his feet, the two touch gloves. They trade punches and neither land flush, until the Brazilian rips a body kick that Makdessi tries and fails to catch. Makdessi goes after the lead leg with a few more kicks, but Trinaldo practically ignores them. Makdessi scores an uppercut as Trinaldo crashes in, and he just barely ducks a kick from the capoeira playbook as the round ends.

Round 3

The last round begins with a glove touch, and Makdessi is quick to throw a high kick but gets blocked. The two slap hands several times while trying to find a jab and their range, and Makdessi lands a low kick before darting out of the way from the oncoming assault. He avoids the big strikes while backing away from harm, and lands a few light kicks that Trinaldo does not give any thought to blocking. Trinaldo lands a heavy left hand that bloodies up the bridge of Canadian’s nose, and leaps in the air with a knee but Makdessi is well out of the way in time. A high kick from Makdessi is blocked, and as he throws a body kick, Trinaldo scores with a short combination. Trinaldo fires off a left hand that catches Makdessi, and scores another as Makdessi keeps his kicks flowing. The power strikes from Trinaldo are more telegraphed and slower, allowing the Canadian to duck out of the way well in time. The leg kicks are finally drawing a reaction from Trinaldo, although they are practically the only strikes he can successfully land in volume while he avoids the power punches. Trinaldo loads up on his left hand again, and he misses while taking leg kicks. Trinaldo jumps again to land a knee, and Makdessi is a foot away and out of danger when the Brazilian arrives at the station. Leg kicks pile up, and as Trinaldo come in with an uppercut, Makdessi clips him with a left hand that finally gets the Brazilian’s respect. The strike his most successful so far, Makdessi wings and misses with a few spinning wheel kicks. As Makdessi jabs his way in, Trinaldo goes after the big left hand. We hear the 10-second clapper, and Trinaldo pursues one final low-percentage cartwheel kick, and he cannot score it successfully. The round ends, and that’s now eight judges’ decisions in a row.

To continue along in the main card and try to break the streak of eight straight decisions, we move to the heaviest weight class of the evening by far: light heavyweight. Walker (17-4, 3-1 UFC) will come to blows with Krylov (26-7, 7-5 UFC), and across 54 fights in their combined careers, the two have reached the scorecards twice. Referee Mike Beltran will be holding on tight for a fight with odds of -505 that it doesn’t go the distance. Walker opens with a front kick, and Krylov lands a left hand, Walker leaps in the air, and Krylov clinches up with him quickly. Both slug it out in the clinch, but Krylov changes levels for a double leg takedown, and is unable to trip the leg out as Walker elbows him. A few downward elbows come from Walker, and they are borderline as to whether they are legal. Krylov manages to wrench the legs out, and Walker tries to walk up the cage and out of this risky position. Krylov isolates Walker’s right leg to keep him grounded, while Walker punches him in the face from his back. “The Miner” is trying to dig the legs out, and keeps Walker sitting with his back against the fence. Krylov switches to hold on to the other leg, and the two seem content to land short punches before Walker explodes to his feet. Walker nails him with a big elbow, and Krylov takes it and tries to take the fight down, but it is nothing doing. Walker’s hands are down, and he took a big shot as he falls backward. He might be playing possum, as he blasts Krylov with a spinning back fist, but the Ukrainian marches through it and lands a takedown. With a minute to go, Walker keeps full guard and tries to punch from his back, but Krylov is landing the more successful and impactful strikes. Krylov hits him with a few more elbows, while Walker throws his legs up to pursue a triangle choke. Krylov pushes through it, and rides out the end of the round on top.

Round 2

Walker opens with a high kick, but Krylov walks through it before landing a few strikes and landing the takedown. Walker scores a few elbows, and the side of Krylov’s head has started a thin trickle of blood from one of those hacking shots. Krylov pulls the legs out from beneath Walker, and halts a reversal attempt from the Brazilian while working him over with a few short elbows and punches. Walker is nullified, and Krylov flirts with an arm-triangle choke before bailing on it to land elbows. The Ukrainian stays heavy, and Walker puts his legs up for a triangle choke but Krylov stacks him up before popping his head out. Krylov stands up before dropping down, where he lands in side control. Walker turns to stand up and nearly gives up his back, but Krylov forces him back down to the ground. “The Miner” keeps punches going, and Walker can do nothing to get out of the half guard position as he gasps for air. Krylov tries to walk over the guard to pass, and Walker times it to get on top himself. Krylov pulls for a leg lock, and starts landing hammerfists while Walker wrenches his leg out of danger. The Brazilian takes his back with 30 seconds to go, but Krylov rolls out and hunts for a kneebar. Walker gets his leg free once more and starts to lump him up with heavy punches and a powerful knee to the body. Walker throws everything he has at him to end the round, but the horn sounds before he can secure a finish.

Round 3

They touch gloves to open the final round, and Krylov runs at him before Walker jumps away. Krylov scores a front kick that pushes Walker away, and Walker turns before trying to nail him with a reverse elbow. Krylov pushes the pace to land a takedown, but Walker stops him by pushing him down and landing on top. Walker is nearly in side control, and he steps over to mount with 3:40 left on the clock. Suddenly, Krylov scrambles and reverses the position, and Walker is on his back and very possibly out of steam. The Ukrainian goes after an arm-triangle choke before sitting up to try to land elbows. The two men are completely gassed, and Krylov slowly sits up and throws a punch before lowering down to catch his breath. Walker hacks a few elbows from his back, and Krylov sits him up to throw punches but they are increasingly labored. Beltran calls for action, and Walker rolls for an armbar but Krylov easily pulls his arm free and takes half guard. Krylov methodically works with elbows on top while Walker scoots to the fence, before retaining guard. Walker kicks off to get back up, but loses position and Krylov holds on tight. Krylov slams down two thudding elbows, and Walker is too out of steam to defend himself effectively. The two hang on, and we miraculously hear the final bell and our ninth straight decision of the evening. This ties the record of UFC on ESPN 4 in 2019 for the most consecutive decisions in UFC history, and we are one shy of the all-time record for the total number of decisions at any UFC card.

Former featherweight contender Carneiro (13-3-1, 5-3 UFC) has decided he had enough of the 145-pound weight cut and has moved up to the lightweight, where he will face Hadzovic (13-5, 3-3 UFC). Our referee to keep things official is Eduardo Herdy. Can this break the decision streak? Hadzovic opens up with a low kick, and misses with a high kick. The two come together and trade, before Moicano lands a takedown and snatches the back of Hadzovic. "The Bosnian Bomber" is already in serious danger, as Carneiro sinks in the rear-naked choke and squeezes tight. Hadzovic has no choice but to tap out, and Herdy stops the fight! In victory, “Moicano” is outraged as he stands above his defeated opponent and shouts down upon him. Hadzovic stands up, and the two nearly come to blows after the fight concludes. Cooler heads prevail as security intervenes. Carneiro shouts to the crowd to celebrate in his home country of Brazil, but his screams fall on empty seats. At the very least, we have our first finish of the evening, and in speedy fashion.

Round 1

In the only bout of the evening between two fighters representing Brazil, two of the most highly decorated submission artists in the welterweight division face off when Maia (28-9, 22-9 UFC) tests his skills against Burns (17-3, 10-3 UFC). Together, the two have submitted a healthy 22 opponents across their 45 victories, and referee Osiris Maia will be the third Brazilian in the cage. They race to the center of the Octagon, and Maia sticks out a jab but it is Burns that throws something of note first, in the form of a right hand that misses. Burns lands a leg kick, while Maia scores a left hook. Burns scores two more kicks, and Maia comes back with that same left. Maia is pushing the pace in Burns, with a left hand that does little more than set up a single leg takedown. Burns nearly welcomes the takedown, fishing for a heel hook before abandoning it to stand up. The former title challenger keeps on him, nearly taking Burns’ back while pushing him against the fence and threatening with another takedown. As Burns tries to roll, Maia fishes for a rear-naked choke, and gets a hook in as Burns fights off the arm that wraps around his throat. Burns slips out the back door and stands back up before anything comes from it, and blasts Maia with a monster left hook. Maia crumples to the canvas, and Burns celebrates by throwing his arms in the air. He looks to the referee to call the fight, but none come, so Burns chases after him and swarms him with punches until the ref stops the action. This is an enormous win for Burns, who smashes a top-five opponent with style points, and immediately stakes his claim as an elite fighter in the division.

Kevin Lee vs. Charles Oliveira

Round 1

We have now reached the main event, in what may be the last UFC fight for some time. The lone American on the card in Lee (18-5, 11-5 UFC) will try to halt an impressive six-fight finish streak for Brazilian finisher Oliveira (28-8, 1 NC; 16-8, 1 NC UFC). The referee for this 159-pound catchweight contest -- Lee missed weight significantly -- is Mike Beltran, and Lee is fired up but elects to touch gloves to start what could be the last UFC card for a while. Oliveira opens up with a jumping switch kick, and then lands a low kick before throwing another jumping kick. Lee whips a left hand at him, and Oliveira ignores it and scores one more jumping head kick. The Brazilian works the jab a few times to decent success, and follows one with a left hand as Lee backpedals. Lee takes a kick and barely misses a looping left hand, but scores a right hand and then digs to the body with a left. Lee’s nose is already marked up, and he scores a one-two before Oliveira hits a trip takedown. Lee reverses position but puts himself in leglock danger, and Oliveira is hunting for a heel hook now. Oliveira throws his legs up for a triangle, and Lee bursts free but falls into another heel hook attempt. Lee tries to spin around and gives up his back, where the Brazilian seeks out the neck but Lee turns out. The American steps over and nearly takes mount, but Oliveira hunts for another heel hook. He takes a punch in the process, and has to give up position when Lee wriggles free. Lee is a little stuck in the position, as he still has a leg hooked, but after a stalemate, he gets out of danger. Oliveira hunts for a triangle choke, and Lee sees it coming and passes by it. In the process, the two scramble and both take top position for a moment. Oliveira puts his legs up again to flirt with a triangle choke, but Lee is wise to it and stands back out of it. Lee passes to side control but Oliveira pushes him out of it, so Lee elects to pop him with a few punches. Lee wraps up the first round with a few elbows on top.

Round 2

Oliveira comes out rapidly out of his corner, and swings a spinning back fist that gets blocked. Lee counters with a right hand, so Oliveira backs off before scoring a spinning back fist to the torso. Lee stings him with another right hand, and Oliveira comes back at him by nearly kicking the legs out from the American. Oliveira leaps in the air and tags him with a knee, before working him with a few rights and an uppercut. As Lee circles away, Oliveira dings him with a few more right hands. Lee is hurt, and he tries to use head movement to get out of harm’s way. Oliveira stands right in front of him and lands more punches, before kicking him in the face with a front kick. Lee tries to go to the body but Oliveira is marching him down. Both men trade big right hands, and Oliveira hits a knee before Lee takes him down. Oliveira immediately fishes for an armbar, and Lee rolls out but falls into a triangle choke position. Oliveira uses the posture to sweep to mount, but Lee turns him out and takes top position again. “The Motown Phenom” stays very heavy on top while he briefly considers an arm-triangle choke, but Oliveira puts his arms outstretched as if to tell Lee he doesn’t have anything. Lee maintains smothering top pressure, and the submission attempts have slowed from the Brazilian, while Lee works him with short punches. Oliveira pursues a heel hook, and Lee stands up and lands a few punches on top. Oliveira tries to trade with Lee while on his back, so Lee lowers himself down to score a few elbows and punches until the round ends.

Round 3

Oliveira kicks off the round with a flying head kick, and Lee tries to catch him on the way in with a left. Lee loads up on a head kick and a few big right hands, while Oliveira backs off with a kick that Lee catches. He uses the position he is in change levels for a quick takedown, but puts his neck in immediate danger from a guillotine choke. Oliveira cinches it up while Lee is trapped in half guard. The American, who is at risk of getting put to sleep, taps out repeatedly. Beltran rushes in to stop the fight, and Lee ignores the stoppage and starts to take Oliveira’s back. Beltran pulls them apart quickly. Was Lee out for a moment and blacked out during the choke? Did he try to pull a fast one on everyone? Either way, it is clear that Lee tapped repeatedly, and this is an enormous win for Oliveira. He has now won seven fights in a row by earning arguably his biggest victory to date, and he has finished each of those seven opponents. With his triumph, Oliveira has his sights set on the top of the division, calling out Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. We hope that the match between those two men will still go on as scheduled, even if it has to take place in a new location.
