Round 1

Over the last week, this card has significantly transformed from what it was beforehand. This nine-fight offering now begins with a heavyweight rumble – the only bout on the card above 195 pounds – between two big men desperately seeking their first UFC win in Mayes (7-4, 0-2 UFC) and Martinez (15-6-2, 0-1 UFC). This 506-pound affair will be overseen by referee Chris Tognoni, and the two sluggers do not touch gloves to begin the evening. Instead, Mayes fires off a low kick, and Martinez checks it. The Guam native does not check the second one that comes at him, and instead elects to return fire with one of his own. Mayes utilizes a pair of front kicks to the breadbasket to shove Martinez away, and Martinez tries to counter but is well off the mark. Mayes chops down the lead leg with another kick, and Martinez thinks to change levels but fakes instead to land an overhand right. Mayes backs off to slap down a few more leg kicks, and when Martinez responds in kind, Mayes is quick to check it. Mayes swings and misses with a big two-punch combination and a leg kick that spins him all the way around. When Mayes throws a naked leg kick, Martinez nearly connects with a looping right hook, but there is nothing doing as he is out of range. Mayes peppers his man with leg kicks and long, reaching punches, and keeps his distance from Martinez who is trying to sling bombs. Mayes lets loose a right hand that his opponent ducks, and Martinez comes back at him with a quick but heavy salvo that clatters off Mayes’ guard. Martinez scores a leg kick as Mayes comes in, and Mayes ignores it to hack at him with a standing elbow and a trio of punches. Mayes jabs to the body with his toes, and Martinez clacks a kick off the knee. Martinez throws a side kick, and spins around with a wheel kick in the process. Although it does not land, Mayes shows him respect and grins at his man for trying it. Mayes fakes his way forward, draws out a counter, and closes the distance to clinch up. “Kong” ties Martinez up in a body lock, and plants Martinez on his back with about 45 seconds left in the round. Mayes is in half guard while delivering punches and short elbows from above, and his ground-and-pound ends the round.

Round 2

These two heavy-handed heayvweights clap hands to begin the round, and Mayes opens up with leg kicks again. Martinez rushes in after these kicks to swing heavy leather, and Tognoni stops the fight. Throughout the previous round, Tognoni had sporadically warned Mayes to close his hands and stop leading with his fingers outstretched. Mayes apologizes, and the round resumes. Martinez marches him down, and Mayes continues to reach his fingers out despite the pleas. Mayes steps in with a knee, and Martinez backs off to recover. Martinez tries to wing a right hand, and Mayes digs a knee to the body again. Mayes sits down on a right hand, and Martinez eats it like a burger and throws a pair of leg kicks. Mayes rushes forward with a stream of punches, and Martinez absorbs them without issue. Mayes raises his arms in the air to celebrate his worn, and he goes back to the well with that same three- or four-punch salvo. Martinez takes a few punches on the chin, and a body kick for good measure, and only responds by nodding at his opponent. Mayes pushes his man to the fence and leaps in the air with a knee. Even though Martinez blocked it, there is still a resounding impact, and he covers up while Mayes tees off on him. Mayes backs away to reset, and Martinez pressures him to the other side of the cage to attack for a takedown. Mayes may have gotten away with a fence grab to stay upright while Martinez pursues a single, and he does again when Martinez lifts him in the air. Mayes hops up to connect with a flying knee, and Martinez turns away while blinking heavily. Mayes lets him recover instead of a leading an assault, so Martinez gathers himself and gets on the offensive with a barrage of punches. Mayes blocks them and gives it right back to him, ending the round while landing shots with Martinez backed to the cage.

Round 3

There is a touch of hands to start the round, and Mayes follows it with a one-two. Martinez stalks him down but Mayes is the one landing, getting off strikes from a distance and absorbing far fewer coming at him. Perhaps sensing he is down on the scorecards, Martinez starts chasing after Mayes and lobbing bombs. Both men land heavy punches and reel from the impacts, but they recover and Mayes starts to circle on the outside. Martinez puts his foot on the gas and starts loading up to land on Mayes, and Mayes dances out of the way like a matador and a bull. Mayes pushes forward to take the fight down, and Martinez manages to power out of the position and reverses him. Mayes falls to his seat against the fence, and Martinez wraps his arm around Mayes’ neck with a power guillotine position. Tognoni checks to make sure that Mayes is still awake, and Mayes responds that he is all good. Mayes shakes his neck free and powers back to his feet, where he muscles Martinez into the fence. Mayes backs away and gathers his thoughts, before striding forward to get off some heavy shots. The chin of the Guam native is not in question, and he takes everything Mayes offers and fires back with heavy shots that may have hurt Mayes. Mayes stumbles back to the fence, and Martinez presses in for a takedown in the clinch instead of letting his hands go. Mayes gets his wits back about him as Tognoni asks for Martinez to work, so Martinez lands some short punches to the body to stave off a separation. Mayes is unconcerned about getting taken down, and he palms Martinez’ face to push him away. Martinez chases him down with strikes as Mayes retreats, and Mayes spins around with an elbow that drills Martinez right on the jaw. Martinez walks through it and rushes after Mayes, and ends up greeting Mayes’ flying knee with his face. Martinez does not even register that he has been struck as he swings with everything he has left, but Mayes is cognizant of his position and even lets rip one more final jump knee as the round ends in a slugfest.

Round 1

Moving on to the welterweight division, a pair of fighters looking to bounce back from knockout losses square off as Morono (17-6, 1 NC; 6-3, 1 NC UFC) faces McKee (10-3-1, 0-1 UFC). Drawing the assignment is referee Jason Herzog, and the two do not touch gloves to begin. Morono begins with a leg kick, and McKee sends a booming right hand that falls shy of the mark. McKee jabs to the body and avoid a left hook counter, and the two start slugging it out. Morono clips him at the end of a right hand to send McKee tripping backwards, but the Northern Ireland fighter recovers and wades back into the fray. McKee reaches out with a few leg kicks, and Morono returns fire with an overhand right. McKee eats it and takes another one, and his leg kicks are not having an appreciable effect as they keep getting countered. McKee fakes another to draw out a counter, and ducks Morono’s looping right hook to get off his jab. Morono lands a few punches in a combination, and pulls back when McKee is about to give it back to him. Morono takes a jab and lands another big right hand, and he presses “Skeletor” into the cage. Morono cracks his man with an elbow on the break, and McKee walks forward but absorbs a heavy leg kick. Morono winds up with a huge right hand, and McKee eats it on the brow and tries to throw back. Morono lands a few punches and a front kick, and a right hand clacks off McKee’s forehead. McKee does not seem too fazed, and he walks into a jab that makes him stumble. McKee crashes forward with a few heavy punches, and Morono tries to fire back but McKee is more accurate and bullies Morono into the cage. Morono powers out of the position and lands a left hand, and McKee returns to use his jab. The two clinch up, and Morono gets off a few uppercuts and right hands until “Skeletor” bails on it. Morono chases him with a head kick, and McKee barely ducks in time. The two come to blows again in the middle of the fence, and when each land, Morono just misses with a jump knee. “The Great White” smells blood after landing a combination, and he swings heavy with a few punches and ends the round with a spinning back kick to the body.

Round 2

McKee lands first with a leg kick, and he follows suit with another. The fighter out of Northern Ireland jabs a few times and takes a leg kick of his own. McKee targets the body and blocks a side kick zooming towards his face. Morono stands first and lets loose a few punches, and he sinks in a leg kick to the side of McKee’s knee. McKee is ready to brawl, and he wanders forward as they both trade punches. Morono pushes off with a side kick as McKee is loading up on a right hand, and McKee takes a breath and jabs towards the body. McKee rips the same spot on the midsection with a left hand, and Morono takes it square and backs away to connect with a few leg kicks. Morono jabs to the face while McKee jabs at the body, and they crash together to clinch and sling elbows. McKee’s body strikes continue to mount as Morono is headhunting, letting loose huge right hands that land intermittently or slide off the shoulder. Morono charges in with a steady stream of punches, and McKee’s face may be glowing red but he does not appear too worse for wear. Morono continues to take it to him, eventually dragging the fighter from UK down to the ground. McKee powers his way back up and the two get back to jabbing at one another in the center of the cage. They go tit-for-tat with strikes as McKee’s face begins to show damage, sometimes even landing strikes at the same second. Morono attempts to rush in and gets countered on the way in, and McKee does this again to disrupt the offense of the American. Morono sees a flying knee coming and steps calmly out of the way, and turns about to kick the body with a side kick. Morono wades forward with punches and a follow-up head kick, and McKee rolls with them and fires back with left hands. McKee sits down on a left hand, and Morono practically ignores it and blasts McKee with a right hook. The pace on this fight is intense, and neither show signs of letting up as Morono kicks him in the body and McKee jabs back to the face. Morono walks forward to clinch up and land heavy punches from a short distance, and when they split, Morono chases him down until the round ends.

Round 3

The two welterweights touch gloves to begin the round, and both step forward to trade leather. Jabs from both fighters land on the chin, and McKee fires off a one-two that connects off the forward bow. Morono backs away and leans on his jab, and comes forward to land big shots but winds up in the clinch after swinging too hard. Another clinch allows for Morono to drill a knee into McKee’s face, but “Skeletor” is not budging and presses the pace. Morono lands a pair of right hands right on the jaw, and McKee returns with his own powerful punches. McKee sits down on a body kick that momentarily stuns Morono, but the American bites down on his mouthpiece and lands three punches concluding with a power right hand. McKee rips the body, and scores an uppercut that snaps Morono’s head back. McKee continues to attack the body, and Morono may be hurt from them and he shoots in for a takedown. Landing the takedown and winding up on top, Morono tries to get off some ground strikes but McKee threatens off his back with submissions. The offensive guard of McKee puts up a triangle choke and an omoplata attempt, which is enough to get Morono off of him and spin out. When they stand, Morono presses him into the fence, leading McKee’s mouthpiece to fall out and slide across the canvas, only to get stuck on the fence. Herzog pushes the mouthpiece through to have the outside referee recover it, but it falls through the grate below the cage. McKee’s corner offers to give him a replacement mouthpiece, and Morono is protesting the stoppage. Referee Mark Smith climbs underneath the staging of the cage to recover the mouthpiece, but he cannot find it and McKee’s corner sprints back to the locker room to get it as Smith takes a flashlight to keep looking for the lost gumshield. Smith eventually recovers it in a situation that is quite unique, and he washes it out and replaces it in McKee’s mouth. Herzog handled this situation about as well as any could, and when the fight gets clocked back in, Morono starts slinging bombs. McKee goes back to the body, and Morono responds with a knee to the face. Morono ducks a jab to hit a takedown, where he lands in full guard and locks McKee down while landing punches and elbows on top. McKee blasts his way back to his knees, but “The Great White” hops on to threaten back control, so McKee falls to his back again. Morono advances to full mount, and he starts slamming elbows into McKee’s face. Morono rains down punishment as the 10-second clapper sounds, and he gives it everything he has left in a final storm of elbows and punches until the horn concludes this intriguing fight.

Shifting gears to bantamweight, two men born two days and a continent apart from one another lock horns when Brazil’s de Freitas (12-5, 1-1 UFC) clashes with Virginia native Gravely (19-6, 0-1 UFC). The third man inside the Octagon is referee Chris Tognoni, and with a respectful glove touch, away we go! Gravely opens up with a leg kicks and gets countered over the top with a left hand. Both men immediately start slugging it out, until Gravely grabs hold of the Brazilian and slings him to the ground. Gravely lands in side control as de Freitas defends off his back and locks his opponent down. Gravely is unable to get many strikes off while de Freitas keeps him stuck tight, and de Freitas snakes his leg through to recover guard and kick off to get back to his feet. Gravely tries to land a one-two, and de Freitas backs out of harm’s way and lets loose a head kick that graces off the head. De Freitas stings Gravely with a hard calf kick, and both men release bombs and hurt one another. Gravely takes a step back and may be in trouble, but he gathers his thoughts to shoot in for a takedown and gets it. Gravely sits on top complacently and allows de Freitas to lift his legs up to fish for a triangle choke, and he lifts de Freitas in the air to slam him down and break the position. “The Spartan” transitions to an omoplata from off his back, and when Gravely pulls his arm free, de Freitas ties him up again and kicks Gravely away. Gravely rushes forward to keep the Brazilian on his back, and he lands a few slapping kicks to the posterior while dodging a dangerous upkick. Gravely keeps kicking the same spot until he wades forward into the guard, and de Freitas welcomes him down and ties him up in guard before attacking an armbar. Gravely yanks his wrist free and gets loose, allowing de Freitas to stand back up. De Freitas lands a right hand and a flying knee, but Gravely catches him and slams him down to the ground to take half guard. Gravely stays tight on top to ride out the round.

Round 2

This time, there is no glove touch as the round begins. Both men are cautious as they approach one another, with de Freitas not overcommitting to strikes to get taken down, or Gravely selling out for a takedown. De Freitas connects with a left hand, and he bull-rushes Gravely over to put the American on his back. Gravely bursts out of the position to get back up, and he presses de Freitas into the fence to try to take his opponent down instead. Gravely tries to elevate de Freitas from behind, but de Freitas is able to keep his balance and get his back against the fence until he pushes away. Gravely swings and misses with a booming right hand, and de Freitas presses in for a takedown but Gravely flips him over and lands on top. Gravely fights off a sweep attempt to get into half guard, and he lands a few punches while de Freitas flips and bucks like a bronco. Gravely rides out the position to land sporadic strikes and fight off submission attempts from de Freitas, and de Freitas gets away with a fence grab to recover guard. De Freitas scoots back to the fence and threatens with a guillotine choke to stand back up, but Gravely has hold of his left leg. The Brazilian frees himself and starts swinging hard, clipping Gravely on the chin a few times. Gravely eats the shots and takes de Freitas down, but de Freitas is able to spring back up and into boxing range. De Freitas lands a few punches from a distance until Gravely takes him down again. A scramble from de Freitas nearly allows him to take Gravely’s back, but Gravely powers out and pushes de Freitas back down. Gravely concludes the round with some strikes from above.

Round 3

The final frame commences with a leg kick and a high kick from Gravely, but neither find their mark. De Freitas keeps his distance and unloads a pair of hooks, and backs up to lands two more. He swings a little too hard with a left hand, allowing Gravely to change levels and drop under it to hit a lightning-quick takedown. Gravely is already in half guard as he hits the ground, and he drops down a few left hands as de Freitas is stuck on his back while control time racks up for the American. Gravely continues to occasionally deliver his fist into de Freitas’ mouth, but the Brazilian manages to scramble to get Gravely back to his full guard. De Freitas swings his legs up to pursue an armbar, but Gravely sees it coming and stays heavy while landing shots. Gravely pushes through the butterfly guard and another submission attempt or two to take half guard again, but de Freitas sits up and powers his way to his feet. The Brazilian tries to slug it out with some power punches, and Gravely obliges him with a few heavy right hands and leg kicks. De Freitas smashes his opponent in the face with a right hand, hurting the American and forcing him to pursue a takedown. De Freitas keeps his balance while Gravely recovers, and he gains separation after staving off another single. “The Spartan” lets loose a few powerful punches to hurt Gravely again, and he stuffs another telegraphed takedown to push Gravely off. De Freitas pours it on and stuffs takedowns, landing heavy punches on the chin again and again. Gravely absorbs each and every one, failing on a few takedowns, and falling forward until he manages to get de Freitas down. The Brazilian desperately struggles and gets to his feet, and both land huge right hands one after the other like a pair of Rock-em Sock-em Robots. The wild exchange carries on right to the final bell.

Rounding out the prelims is a women’s strawweight tilt when Markos (10-9-1, 6-8-1 UFC) tries to snap the first losing streak of her career against newcomer and former Invicta strawweight champ Murata (11-1, 0-0 UFC). Referee Mark Smith dusts himself off to check in the contest even though the two women do not touch gloves, and it’s time to begin. Markos begins the fight with a low stance in anticipation of the impending takedown, and Markos kicks her in the calf a few times. Markos ducks a big right hand, and when she tries to land a heavy punch, Murata grabs hold of her, ties up a body lock and wrenches Markos down to the ground. The Canadian ties Murata down to stifle any offense, but Murata pulls herself free and steps over to take side control. “Quiet Storm” fights her way back up, and manages to get to her feet but is bullied into the fence. Murata considers a throw but turns it into a body lock takedown. This time, Markos defends the trip and keeps upright, as her back is trapped against the cage. Both women fall to their knees, and Murata trips her leg out and puts Markos on to her back. Murata is in side control as she slams a left hand into Markos’ face, but it is one-and-done as Markos has her held tight. Murata sits up and elbows Markos in the chin a few times, and she hooks Markos’ arm over her face like a seatbelt while she smashes Markos in the face with more elbows and punches. Markos slides her way to the fence, but in the process, Murata blasts her with more elbows. Murata keeps spamming elbows as Smith warns Markos to do something, so Markos attacks a heel hook. Murata spins out without much issue, and sits on top until the horn blares.

Round 2

The round begins with Murata pushing the pace, hopping in and out with jabs while Markos tries to strike with her Japanese foe. Markos kicks the lead leg, and Murata spins around and smacks her in the face with a spinning back fist. Murata charges in to land a few punches and a kick, and Markos holds her ground and tags Murata with a left hook. Both women jab at one anther from a distance, with their strikes not landing until Murata rushes in with a right hand. Markos returns fire with a body kick, and nearly lands a leg kick but Murata pulls her foot back in time. Markos again pursues the leg kick that is similarly inaccurate, and a spinning back fist is feet away from her intended target. Murata closes the distance to clinch up, and the Canadian fights her way free without getting ensnared. A leg kick and a right hand from Markos scores, and Murata walks forward into an elbow but still pursues a single leg takedown. Markos is on her seat pressed to the fence, and Murata ties her legs up before stepping over to press Markos down. Murata attempts to take mount, and a few left hands soften up Markos to allow her to step over. Murata places her knee on Markos’ right hand to open her up for punches, and Markos scrambles to get to her knees. Murata latches on a guillotine choke but the crimson-haired fighter pulls her neck out as she breaks the grip. Murata keeps Markos trapped to the cage and she delivers a few knees to the torso. Before Murata can complete a trip takedown attempt from the body lock position, time expires.

Round 3

The strawweights begin tentatively, until Markos flings a front kick to the body. Murata bites down on her mouthpiece to wing a right hand, and it bounces off Markos’ forehead. Markos kicks from far off, and none of them land with any significant import. She gets off a leg kick when Murata steps forward, but Murata avoids the follow-up punches. Murata ducks a punch to shoot in for a takedown, and Markos stays upright until she doesn’t. Murata plants Markos on her back on the second attempt, and she slides over the top to wrap up a brabo choke. Markos rolls through to defend the choke, and she may have tapped but the fight continues. Markos turns to the side to break the grip, and Murata looks to turn it into a potential north-south choke until Markos pulls her opponent’s hands out to stop the choke. As Markos scrambles and kicks, she manages to recover her way to full guard. Murata sits up and smashes Markos on the jaw with a few resounding punches that bounce Markos’ head off the canvas. The Canadian is unconcerned as she fights to trap Murata down again, and she grabs a double wrist lock before flinging her legs up to attack an armbar. Murata sees it coming and pushes out, and Markos boots her in the face with a potentially illegal upkick. Smith waves his hand in the air to signal for a replay, and Murata shakes off the cobwebs and jumps back down into the guard. The replay, which runs while the fight is still in process, determines that the upkick was legal as Murata was not grounded. In the meantime, Murata stays heavy on top and lands a few shots until the final horn sounds.

Kicking off the main card is another one of the three women’s strawweight collisions tonight, as Hansen (7-3, 1-0 UFC) tries to make it two in a row under the UFC banner against the debuting Contender Series signee McKenna (5-1, 0-0 UFC). Supervising the action will be referee Jason Herzog, who watches the two women clap hands to start off their contest. The two start out swinging immediately, with Hansen stepping in with several jabs and left hands. The Brit from Wales is willing to throw back and lands a few of her own, but McKenna’s nose has already been marked up. Hansen eats a few punches only to return fire with her own salvo punctuated by a favorite. Hansen connects with a big right hand, and her eye is marking up as well as these two strawweights are trading. McKenna connects with a one-two, and Hansen powers in to clinch up, but McKenna turns her about into the fence. Hansen hits a throw and tosses McKenna down, but “Poppins” powers her way back to her feet up the fence. Hansen lifts her up, but sets her back down when she cannot ground her foe. They separate, and march towards one another to land left hands. Hansen’s hair is bothering her as it flows in front of her eyes just before McKenna lands a hard combination of punches. McKenna chains several punches together in succession, and Hansen backs away with a push kick to the body. Hansen ducks a string of punches to grab hold of McKenna, where Hansen pushes her to the cage. McKenna changes levels and pursues a double leg takedown, only to transition it to a single. Hansen keeps her balance and hacks at a few elbows to the side of McKenna’s head. Hansen ties up a guillotine choke to defend it, and she uses the position to knee McKenna in the face a few times. Hansen drops down to try to take the fight down, but she stands back up and winds up a knee that blasts McKenna in the top of the head. With McKenna momentarily stunned, Hansen swirls around and grabs on to McKenna’s back. Round 2

Hansen commences the second stanza with an attempted head kick, and McKenna pushes through it to land a left hand. Hansen gathers herself and knocks McKenna back with three punches, and the Brit marches forward to sling her own combination. Hansen blocks the punches with her face until she pushes in to the clinch, where she muscles McKenna to the wall before McKenna separates. Both women score jabs, and Hansen delivers a kick to the body that would make Bas Rutten smile. McKenna ducks down when Hansen comes forward, allowing Hansen to step in with a knee. McKenna wears it well and fires off a one-two, and a left hand counters an advancing Hansen. McKenna connects at the end of another one-two, and she takes a teep kick to the body to stop this chain from continuing. McKenna bites down on her mouthpiece to swing with a big right hand, but Hansen kicks her in the body to break it up. Hansen steps in with a knee, and McKenna shakes it off to score a big right hand. Hansen does not like this, as she immediately shoots in for a takedown. Hansen picks her up but cannot set her foe down, and redoubles her effort to slam McKenna down. Hansen takes McKenna’s back, and when McKenna scrambles, Hansen rolls for an armbar. McKenna takes top position as she escapes the submission, and she sits comfortable in Hansen’s full guard to drop down some punches and elbows. McKenna keeps heavy top pressure and fishes for an arm-triangle choke, but Hansen scoots her way to the fence and thinks about putting her legs up for a submission and gets elbowed in the face. McKenna keeps pounding on her from above until the horn sounds.

Round 3

Hansen takes the center of the Octagon to begin the final frame, and McKenna jabs at her but is a foot away from the face. Hansen boots her in the face from a distance, and lands a body kick to keep an advancing McKenna at bay. Hansen chains a jab into a right hand, and she steps back to reposition her hair. The two trade jabs, and Hansen walks through one to score a right hand. Hansen lets loose a one-two, and McKenna is ready to give her one right back as soon she finishes. Both women come together and land right hands at the same time, but Hansen’s appears to be the more effective of the two as she backs McKenna up. Hansen presses forward, latches on and hits a body lock takedown to put McKenna on her back. Hansen already in half guard when she lands, she simultaneously pulls her leg out with her foot while punching the body and head. Blood has been drawn in the process, but it is from Hansen’s nose and not from the fighter getting punched. When McKenna sits up, Hansen lines up an anaconda choke but gets thwarted. McKenna holds on to Hansen’s neck to keep the American from landing on her, but she pushes off instead to land a few hammerfists and elbows off her back. McKenna grabs two-on-one wrist control to fish for a kimura sweep, but Hansen steps over while setting up an arm-triangle choke. Hansen steps over to side control from the other side, and McKenna pops her head out in the transition. Hansen reapplies the choke, and when she tries to set it up, McKenna powers out and reverses the position to wind up on top. McKenna starts flurrying with ground strikes, landing a few elbows to the head and punches to the body. Time expires before McKenna can capitalize on the position, and when the final horn ends the fight, McKenna scurries back to her feet and hops back to her corner in clear pain, possibly having suffered a leg injury somewhere along the way. The scorecards could be all over the map in this one.

In a fight that came together within a week, Allen (15-3, 3-0 UFC) gets to fight in November after all when he takes on the returning Strickland (21-3, 8-3 UFC) – the latter winning on Halloween and looking to keep things rolling. The Octagon ranger for this 195-pound catchweight fight due to its short-notice nature is referee Herb Dean, and there is no touch of gloves as they decide to jab each other in the face instead. Allen scores with a leg kick and follows it with a one-two, but Strickland is on him with a few solid punches. Allen flings up a head kick and wades forward with punches, but Strickland nails him with a few punches and marks up Allen’s face already. Allen throws a body kick and gets caught, and Strickland tosses him to the ground. Allen very nearly scores an upkick, but Strickland dodges it and jumps into the guard. Allen sweeps Strickland for a second, but “Tarzan” swings back and remains on top. Allen spins out when he kicks Strickland off, and avoids a right hand careening towards his face to scramble to his feet. Allen grabs the fence to stand up and gets warned, and Strickland is on him tight while occasionally landing punches. Strickland keeps on Allen’s back in the clinch, and he breaks free to try to score a few punches. Allen chops at the lead leg but gets caught with a one-two. Strickland scores another right hand, and Allen responds with one of his own and a leg kick to follow. Both men swing wildly, and Strickland defends himself against the cage to block a jumping knee. Strickland pushes off and sticks out his jab, but absorbs a hacking leg kick that sets him off-balance. Strickland keeps his wits about him and lands four or five punches, but Allen drills the calf again to make Strickland pull his leg back. Allen hurts Strickland with a massive right hand, but Strickland retreats to take a quick count of his teeth before getting his jab going again. Strickland disrupts Allen’s advancement with several jabs, and Allen attacks wildly with a body kick and leaping punches. Both men slug it out right to the bell.

Round 2

Strickland commences the second round with jabs, and Allen leaps forward with a flying knee and some looping punches. Strickland scores a one-two, and then another sends Allen reeling. Allen keeps his balance and spins around while gathering himself to attack again. “All-in” goes al-in with a barrage of strikes, and Strickland covers up but gets distance to land a long series of one-twos in rapid succession. They may not be imminently powerful, but they are getting Allen’s attention as they continue to land successfully. As Allen charges in recklessly, Strickland connects with a one-two that staggers Allen. Allen falls forward and slumps into the fence, where Strickland follows him and pounds on him. Strickland pours it on with a few more hellacious punches until Dean intervenes. We now have our first stoppage of the night, coming in very impressive fashion. Strickland has now recorded two wins in two weeks, and in victory he becomes the first man to ever knock out the durable Allen.

The final 115-pound battle goes on next, as “The Spider Monkey” Yoder (7-6, 2-5 UFC) aims to end her current losing streak against “Danger” Granger (7-1, 1-1 UFC). This bout between two women who both want to get back on the winning track is officiated by referee Jason Herzog, and the glove touch precedes the action. Granger is the first to strike, slapping a leg kick off the lead leg of Yoder. Yoder responds by crashing in with a left hand that helps her close the distance, and Yoder bullies Granger up to the fence. Granger manages to spin her around, where she knees Yoder in the stomach once. Yoder tries to toss Granger over her shoulder, but she falls over Granger and flips to get back to her feet. Granger stands back and lets her stand, where she kicks Yoder in the calf. Yoder crashes in with a left hand, and she manages to hit a head-and-arm throw to put Granger jammed against the corner of the fence while on her back. When Herzog asks for Yoder to keep working, she obliges him by landing several punches from above. Granger scrambles wildly to wind up on top, and Yoder rolls for a kneebar off her back. “Danger” is quick to recognize the danger she is in, and she steps over to free her leg. Granger takes top position and drops down a punch or two, while Yoder holds her tight and retains full guard. Granger postures up, and Yoder sits up but cannot quite buck the position, so she falls to her back again. Granger once more sits up and delivers a solid hammerfist and a forearm to Yoder’s chin. Yoder tosses her legs up but Granger is squeezed tight from above, until she postures up and falls into a triangle choke. Yoder cinches up an armbar in the process, but Granger rolls over to free her arm from the bad submission. Yoder keeps an inverted triangle set up, but Granger holds her elbow between the legs so there is no choke. The horn sounds with the two in a very unusual position.

Round 2

The two women touch gloves, and Yoder pushes her leg out to keep an advancing Granger at bay. Granger pushes through the kicks to tie up Yoder, and she lifts a knee that is inches away from smashing Yoder in the chops. The two strawweights jockey for position against the fence, as Yoder keeps a high knee to block strikes to her body, all while delivering knees to Granger’s midsection. Yoder attempts and fails with a throw, but she turns Yoder to the fence and slams knees into Yoder’s chest. Yoder tries again with a throw, and Granger falls over to defend it. Yoder scrambles and takes the top position, but she has her back turned and in an odd position. Yoder spins around but has her leg tied up, so she cannot secure an effective top position. “The Spider Monkey” manages to wrench her leg out and she steps into half guard, but when she just lays on top without landing any strikes or advancing position any further, Herzog warns her to do something. Granger grabs wrist control to look for a kimura, and Yoder outmuscles her grounded opponent to free herself. Both women land inconsequential punches to the body as they are tied up, and the round ends with Yoder on top.

Round 3

The glove touch clocks in this final round, and both land jabs and body kicks at the same time. Yoder steps in with a jab, and when she gets off a leg kick, Granger does the same. Yoder presses in to take the fight down, and she lands it to take side control. Granger climbs up the cage with her feet, but Yoder keeps her grounded by shoving her body back down. Granger rolls to her side while Yoder holds on to her without doing anything, and Herzog is taking a close eye on the fight to make this an actual fight. Granger once more walks off the fence, and Yoder stuffs this and sits on top to set up a spiderweb armbar position. Yoder climbs to a high mount with Granger’s head trapped between Yoder’s legs, and Yoder starts landing ground-and-pound. Yoder gets off a few elbows but Granger kicks off the fence, and bucks like a wild horse to get Yoder off. Yoder stays high and tight, and Granger turns and gives up her back. Yoder sees the neck is open, and she goes after a one-armed rear-naked choke. Granger is able to survive this choke but Yoder pops back to mount, where she punishes Granger with punches on top. “The Spider Monkey” clings on to Granger and alternates between back control and full mount, all while she drops down punches. Yoder pours on the pace with the most emphatic punches of the fight, and she seeks out a rear-naked choke. Granger twists and turns, and Yoder goes palm-to-palm to sink in the choke. The horn blares seconds before Granger can tap or go unconscious, and we have reached the scorecards once more. According to Bruce Buffer, one judge inexplicably scored the fight 27-26, which must be a mistake. This proves to be true, as the official scorecards read 30-26, 29-27, 29-27 all for Yoder.

This catchweight fight that may not last very long pits Alhassan (10-2, 4-2 UFC) against “Khaos the Oxfighter” Williams (10-1, 1-0 UFC). Alhassan will be looking to keep his 100 percent knockout rate intact against a man who has never been stopped with strikes, and referee Mark Smith will make sure that this 173-pound fight – Alhassan missed weight – stays above board. Williams kicks the leg early, and steps in with a double jab. Williams lands a few more leg kicks, so Alhassan responds with a heavier one. Williams sees a leg kick coming, and fakes a jab to sit down on a right hand that splits the guard and sends Alhassan crashing to the canvas. “Judo Thunder” is out cold before his head hits the mat, with his body looking like he was frozen in carbonite. Smith dives in to stop the fight as Williams pounces with a single follow-up right hand that is completely academic, and what a spectacular knockout! This is the first time that Alhassan has ever been finished, and Williams did it in 30 seconds!

We have reached our main event sooner than expected tonight due to bout cancellations earlier tonight, and it should be a banger as “The Irish Dragon” Felder (17-5, 9-5 UFC) welcomes former champ dos Anjos (29-13, 18-11 UFC) back to lightweight. Hanging on tight is referee Herb Dean, and with a touch of gloves, the headliner is underway! Felder feints and fakes his way in with a few jabs, and leads off with a leg kick. Dos Anjos responds with a front kick, leading Felder to score a right hand and another leg kick. Dos Anjos reaches in to the body and gets countered with an overhand right, but the Brazilian pops a body kick down the middle. Felder takes a knee to the body and scores a big punch, and dos Anjos blasts Felder to the body again with a kick. Dos Anjos flings up a head kick, and Felder blocks it but still eats it. Felder spins with an elbow, and the elbow slices open dos Anjos’ forehead above his right eye. The former champ does not like this strike, and he shoots in for a double leg takedown. Dos Anjos successfully lands the takedown, and he hops into half guard where he tries to grind his elbow on Felder’s face. Dos Anjos clings to Felder while “The Irish Dragon” scoots his back to the fence so he can wall-walk up to his feet. Felder powers back up, and dos Anjos attacks a standing arm-triangle choke. The American fights off the choke but is pressed heavily to the fence, where dos Anjos knees him to the body a few times. Felder spins and fights his way out, where he rips an elbow across dos Anjos’ forehead. Felder lands a left and a right, but dos Anjos returns fire with a front kick to the body. Felder once more lands the left-right, and dos Anjos cannot kick him back this time. Felder sticks him from a distance with left hands and times knees when dos Anjos works his way forward. When the Brazilian pressures him, Felder spins for another elbow, but this time, dos Anjos sees it coming. The two lightweight trade heavy leather, and both shoot in for takedowns at the same time to clash their heads. Felder pushes dos Anjos to the fence, but the former champ spins him around and drags Felder down. Felder once more walks back to his feet, and does so without taking any damage. Dos Anjos stays tightly pressed to Felder in the clinch, and he zings an elbow that rings off Felder’s face. Dos Anjos smashes a left hand into Felder’s forehead, but “The Irish Dragon” wears it well and the horn sounds.

Felder sticks out a jab a few times in the opening seconds before loosing a front kick to the body. Felder aims a knee to the chest, but dos Anjos avoids it and thumps a body kick off Felder’s right side. Dos Anjos punches his way into the clinch, where he changes levels for a takedown attempt. Felder muscles his way out, and dos Anjos hits him with an elbow on the break. Felder pays him back shortly thereafter, and dos Anjos eats a heavy inside leg kick. Felder snaps another elbow off dos Anjos’s face, and he keeps dos Anjos at bay with sharp strikes until dos Anjos shoots in for another takedown. Felder stays upright but gets mashed into the fence again, where dos Anjos delivers a few knees to the body. Felder gives him one back, so dos Anjos drops down for a single but again bails on it. Both men trade elbows, and one of Felder’s fingers may have jabbed dos Anjos in the eye. Felder offers an apology glove touch, and dos Anjos accepts it and then kicks Felder in the body again. Felder snaps out a jab a few times, and dos Anjos steps in with a few punches. Felder hurts him with a stiff right hand, and follows it with another. A one-two from Felder finds its home on dos Anjos’ chin, and dos Anjos walks through it to kick the body again. Dos Anjos wades in only to drop down for a double leg takedown, and Felder stuffs it for a moment, until dos Anjos trips him down to the canvas. Felder trapped with his back to the fence, he is able to post off to stand back up. Dos Anjos tries to sting him with a high knee, but instead of just elects to keep Felder pressed tightly to the fence. Dos Anjos aims to rip Felder’s legs out from beneath the American, but Felder keeps his balance as he leans into the cage. Dos Anjos knees the thigh and he pursues another takedown as he has partial control of Felder’s back, but Felder backs him off with a separation with a front kick. Dos Anjos bites down on his mouthpiece, and clubs Felder with a left hand just like he did at the end of the first frame.

The two lightweights touch ‘em up, and Felder leads off with a head kick that gets blocked. Dos Anjos kicks his opponent in the leg, and Felder replies with three of his own. Felder steps in with a knee, but dos Anjos pushes it out of the way. Felder chains the knee along into a leg kick, until dos Anjos crashes in for a takedown attempt. Felder sneaks in an elbow to force a break, and dos Anjos reaches with a right hand so he can clinch up. Felder times his advancement to turn the Brazilian around, where a stalemate ensues as neither can get off strikes or break position. Dos Anjos frames off with an elbow, and Felder slings one on the break that brushes past his opponent’s cheek. The former champ changes levels and hits a takedown, where Felder sits with his back to the cage wall. Dos Anjos pushes Felder over, and he tries to step over into mount position, but Felder defends by rolling to his side. Felder blasts back to his feet before surrendering back control, and when Felder lands a strike on the inside, dos Anjos attempts another takedown only to fail. Dos Anjos puts his full body weight on his opponent as he lands a few knees, and the two men start talking to one another in the clinch. Felder and dos Anjos both trade knees and elbows on the inside, and dos Anjos snaps Felder’s head back with a left hand. Dos Anjos jumps in the air to attack, and when he lands, he drops down for a single leg takedown. Felder defends it with a guillotine choke, but dos Anjos lifts him in the air and slams him down to the ground in half guard. Dos Anjos hunts for an arm-triangle choke as he tries to take mount, but when Felder keeps him trapped, dos Anjos elbows him a few times. The Brazilian attacks a kimura, and Felder scrambles until to the horn.

Round 4

Felder starts off the round with a flying knee out of the Kid Yamamoto playbook, and dos Anjos sees it coming and pushes it away. Felder gets off a few striking combinations, and dos Anjos is more interested in taking the fight to the ground, threatening with takedown attempts and keeping Felder guessing. The former champ slams his shin into Felder’s liver, and Felder sits down on an elbow to make him pay for hit. A left hand for Felder has opened up a cut on the corner of dos Anjos’ eye, and “The Irish Dragon” targets it with a few more strikes until dos Anjos shoots in for a takedown. Felder stuffs it, and he keeps his balance when dos Anjos tries to scoop him up like the last round. The action stalls out as dos Anjos holds him to the fence, occasionally changing levels for takedowns while slipping in a knee or two to stay busy. Felder stops another takedown, and he spins dos Anjos to the cage. Felder knees dos Anjos to the body once, and dos Anjos turns him back around. Dos Anjos and Felder knee each other to the body, and Felder tries and fails to knee dos Anjos in the face from close range. Felder grabs hold of the Thai clinch as he turns dos Anjos about, and a knee glances off dos Anjos’ head. Dos Anjos jabs and front kicks Felder when they separate, and Felder comes at him with a few punches. Felder comes up short with a head kick, and Felder is biting down on his mouthpieces as he fires home run shots. Dos Anjos cracks Felder on the forehead with a left hand and opens up a big cut, leading Felder to wipe at it and check the blood, which is flowing. Felder shoots in for a takedown, and he hits it but cannot maintain control, as dos Anjos reverses the position and ends the round on top raining down punches. Let us hope the cut is not in a fight-ending place, as it appears to be above Felder’s right eye.

Round 5

Even though the cut on Felder’s forehead is in a bad place and the cutman cannot stop the bleeding, Felder is cleared to continue. Felder punts dos Anjos in the head, and dos Anjos blocks it and is surprised. Felder stuffs a takedown and makes dos Anjos pay for the attempt with a few crisp strikes. Felder lands a left hand, and dos Anjos presses forward for another takedown. When in close, dos Anjos lands a strike that opens the cut up again. Dos Anjos shoots in for a takedown, and this time, he pulls Felder away from the fence and gets Felder down – the color commentator Michael Bisping lets out an audible “argh” in frustration for his fellow commentator. Dos Anjos takes half guard as he tries to pass to mount, but opts to set up his lethal arm-triangle choke from half guard. Dos Anjos continues to attack this choke, and Felder squirms towards the fence as he twists and pushes off the cage to break up the posture. Dos Anjos decides that he will elbow Felder in the face instead, and Felder scrambles wildly while possibly threatening with a triangle choke. The former champ spins around to push Felder to the fence, and Felder is on his knees trying to stand up. Dos Anjos puts his full body weight on his opponent as he knees Felder in the thigh repeatedly, but Felder muscles his way back up. Felder has his leg dragged out, but he keeps his balance and hops around to stay upright. Dean calls for dos Anjos to work, as the former champ is just holding Felder there as the seconds tick off the clock. Dean calls twice more for some action, so dos Anjos finally obliges with a successful double leg takedown. Felder looks to his corner as time is about to run out, with him stuck on the ground taking strikes from the Brazilian. The horn sounds off for the final time this evening, and we have gone the distance for seven of nine fights tonight. There should be no doubt who gets their hand raised, but it should once more be noted that Felder took this fight less than a week ago and went 25 minutes against a former champion. Next week, we will be treated to a pay-per-view offering with twin flyweight title fights, so we will see you there!
