Valmir Lazaro vs. Michel Richard Cunha dos Prazeres

Round 1

Prazeres opens with a series of leg kicks in the first 60 seconds, but a few are checked by Lazaro. “Bidu” finally lets his hands go after a minute and splits Prazeres’ gloves with a long right hand. Lazaro continues to connect with select shots over the next minute but the action is still fairly slow, as the lightweights circle one another cautiously. With a minute on the clock, Prazeres closes the gap with a one-two, landing the right hand and shooting in behind it. Lazaro hits the ground for a second but springs right back to his feet and denies his countryman’s next takedown attempt. Prazeres tags Lazaro with a hard overhand left in the closing moments, but Lazaro eats it and steps forward to end the round with a leg kick.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Prazeres
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Prazeres
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Prazeres

Round 2

Lazaro keeps Prazeres at range through the first 30 seconds, jabbing and landing leg kicks on the shorter man. Prazeres tries a takedown and gets put on his back by Lazaro, who lays his weight on the “Tractor” for the first half of the round. Lazaro keeps top control until three minutes in, when referee Gary Copeland orders the fighters back to their feet following a period of inactivity. Prazeres rushes Lazaro against the fence, pinning him on the cage with an underhook, but he can’t do anything with the position before Copeland breaks them up again. Prazeres walks forward on Lazaro, who sidesteps as he’s backed up against the fence. Jabs score for Lazaro before Prazeres grabs hold of his leg and puts him back on the fence. This time, Prazeres is able to lift and slam Lazaro, then leaves him on the mat to stand up as time expires.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Lazaro
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Lazaro
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Lazaro

Round 3

Lazaro backpedals as Prazeres tries to take off his head with overhand haymakers. It’s the taller Lazaro landing the greater quantity and quality of strikes, repeatedly making “Tractor” run into stiff jabs. After having his head snapped back by a few more punches, Prazeres rushes Lazaro against the cage, looking for a high single-leg takedown. Lazaro defends well and eventually reverses, planting Prazeres on the ground at the base of the fence with about 90 seconds on the clock. Prazeres controls the wrists of Lazaro to prevent ground-and-pound, and he slows the pace enough that referee Copeland brings the fighters back to their feet with 30 seconds left. Lazaro backs up to avoid more big shots from Prazeres, who tries a clinch and gets shoved to the ground. Lazaro stands over him until the ref orders Prazeres to stand, and then time expires.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Lazaro (29-28 Lazaro)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Lazaro (29-28 Lazaro)
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Lazaro (29-28 Lazaro)

The Official Result

Michel Prazeres def. Valmir Lazaro via Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) R3 5:00

Cesar Arzamendia vs. Polo Reyes

Round 1

Reyes drops Arzamendia with an early shot but allows the Paraguayan to get back on his feet. “Marco Polo” keeps the center of the cage and follows Arzamendia around the outside, catching a few kicks but not landing cleanly with his return strikes as he holds the leg. Arzamendia decides to try a takedown, takes some effort but finally puts the Mexican on the ground. Back up comes Reyes, only to be taken back down again by a slick Arzamendia level change. Again, Reyes climbs back up, grazes Arzamendia and gets taken down again. With 90 seconds left, Reyes is back up again. This time, he breaks away from the clinch with a left hand to the temple which sends Arzamendia slumping to the ground and referee Mario Yamasaki into action.

The Official Result

Polo Reyes def. Cesar Arzamendia via KO (Punch) R1 3:42

Alvaro Herrera vs. Vernon Ramos

Round 1

Ramos is all activity as the fight begins, pressing forward on the larger man with leg kicks and punches. Herrera lands a counter left hook, resets and steps into the pocket with an uppercut. The punch stuns Ramos, who tries to swing back but gets dropped with a short right hand behind the ear. Herrera lands one more shot on the ground before referee Dan Miragliotta steps in for the stoppage.

The Official Result

Alvaro Herrera def. Vernon Ramos via KO (Punches) R1 0:30

Andre Fili vs. Gabriel Benitez

Round 1

Fili gets the southpaw Benitez moving backward with some early body kicks, but “Moggly” is ready and clips the incoming Fili with a check hook in an exchange. Benitez gets his leg kicks going now, too, and jabs are starting to touch Fili down the center as he continues to walk forward on the local favorite. Benitez gets a hand up to block a head kick but still gets clipped with Fili’s shin and wobbles a bit. Fili tries a takedown but Benitez slips away, and the featherweights get back to striking halfway through the round. Fili sticks a jab, tries to close in on Benitez and takes a kick on the leg. Fili walks Benitez toward the fence, where he stuns the Mexican again with a right high kick. Benitez covers up and then crumbles as Fili unloads with follow-up punches. Referee John McCarthy steps in as Benitez slumps to the canvas, giving Fili the stoppage victory.

The Official Result

Andre Fili def. Gabriel Benitez via KO (Head Kick and Punches) R1 3:13

Scott Jorgensen vs. Alejandro Perez

Round 1

After a slow opening minute, Jorgensen walks Perez toward the fence to deliver a leg kick. Perez circles back to the middle and gives Jorgensen a harder chop on the lead leg. Jorgensen shoots for a single-leg on the fence but quickly releases and backs away. Perez’s back is still on the fence as he circles the outside, allowing Jorgensen to pin him there for another takedown attempt. This time, “Young Guns” completes the double-leg after a struggle, but Perez gets right back on his feet. Two minutes left in the round, Jorgensen comes over the top with a right hand. Perez retaliates with a pair of punches and a body shot, then circles out to get his back away from the fence. The bantamweights trade leg kicks again, and Jorgensen grazes Perez’s chin with a sweeping left hand. A hard leg kick at the end of the round leaves Jorgensen hopping. He tries to plant the leg and rolls his ankle, then drops to the ground just before the horn.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Perez
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Jorgensen
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Jorgensen

Round 2

Jorgensen’s left leg is badly damaged and the American is barely staying alive here in the early part of round two. Perez is staying measured, walking down Jorgensen with punches and low kicks, while “Young Guns” repeatedly loses his footing and drops to the ground, then staggers back to his feet. Referee Gary Copeland is taking a close look, but Jorgensen isn’t absorbing much damage here midway through the round and is still swinging punches back at Perez when he can. Jorgensen gets hold of a single, gets stuffed and tries a leaping knee which misses. Perez lands a couple leg kicks and Jorgensen somehow keeps his footing. The left leg is still unsteady, and Perez chops it out as they near the fence. Jorgensen bounces right back up and comes forward swinging a big overhand left. Perez sweeps his opponent’s legs, but again Jorgensen is able to stand. Jorgensen is showing serious guts here but really isn’t coming close with his punches, and without the ability to take down Perez, he’s without a clear path to victory. Inside the final minute, Jorgensen tries to step forward to strike and his leg finally gives way. Jorgensen taps the mat to ask out of the fight just as referee Copeland runs in to wave it off.

The Official Result

Alejandro Perez def. Scott Jorgensen via TKO (Leg Injury) R2 4:26

Bartosz Fabinski vs. Hector Urbina

Round 1

Fabinski rushes across the cage and shoots for a takedown within seconds. Urbina tries to grab a guillotine as he’s taken down, but he loses the neck and has to settle for closed guard as Fabinski mashes with hammerfists. Two minutes in, Fabinski’s offense has slowed but Urbina looks no closer to getting back to his feet as the Polish grappler out-muscles him on the mat. Referee Mario Yamasaki brings the fighters back to their feet halfway through the round, and Fabinski is up for all of five seconds before he scores another takedown. Urbina just can’t find an angle to escape off his back, and Fabinski is starting to land some heavy elbows and forearms. Urbina throws up a triangle but Fabinski stands up and easily breaks the submission setup. More elbows score for Fabinski, who puts a forearm across Urbina’s throat as they grapple in the closing seconds.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Fabinski
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Fabinski
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Fabinski

Round 2

Fabinski, to the surprise of none, shoots straight for a takedown, picks Urbina’s ankle and brings him to the ground. This time, Urbina is able to sweep with a kimura, but Fabinski reclaims top position in no time. It’s more of the same from round one, just rough grinding from Fabinski on the mat with Urbina unable to escape. Halfway through the round, Yamasaki stands them up again. Seconds later, Fabinski shoots and completes another takedown. Urbina sweeps with one minute on the clock and socks the kneeling Fabinski with a couple tired left hands. “El Toro” doesn’t seem to have much on his punches after two rounds of being worn down on the mat. Fabinski sticks a few jabs before shooting and putting Urbina’s back against the fence. Referee Yamasaki calls in the doctor to check on a Urbina’s left eyebrown, which has a cut. Urbina is cleared to continue and comes back to be taken down once more before round’s end.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Fabinski
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Fabinski
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Fabinski

Round 3

It’s another shot and another takedown for Fabinski, who has to protect his neck as Urbina grabs for a submission and a sweep from underneath. Fabinski puts a foot on a cage post to keep his weight on Urbina and prevent himself from being rolled. Back to top position comes Fabinski, mashing on Urbina’s face with a couple short elbows before going back to full-on grappling mode. Inside the last two minutes, Fabinski steps over to full mount but gets bucked out. Urbina gets to his knees, then slips out the back door as Fabinski tries to jump on his back. The welterweights get back on their feet just before time runs out, but there’s not much action.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Fabinski (30-27 Fabinski)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Fabinski (30-27 Fabinski)
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Fabinski (30-27 Fabinski)

The Official Result

Erik Perez vs. Taylor Lapilus

Round 1

The southpaw Lapilus steps forward on Perez with good, awkward head movement and pawing hands. Perez lands a low kick, answered by Lapilus with a straight left and a right hook. “Goyito” tries to clinch up but can’t hold Lapilus, who circles backward and lands a few leg kicks as Perez comes forward. Another straight right hand tags Perez before he swings a combination, and Lapilus is already out of the way. Both men land in an exchange as the round enters its final two minutes. Perez is staying in the center while Lapilus circles left around the outside. A reaching right hand scores for Perez, but the head kick behind it is blocked. Lapilus lands a left hook, throws a leg kick and has to hop on one leg before he’s able to pull the limb out of Perez’s clutches. Perez is starting to find his hands and puts a kick on Lapilus’ midsection. Goyito tries a takedown just before the round ends but is stopped by referee Dan Miragliotta as the horn sounds.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Lapilus
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Lapilus
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Perez

Round 2

Both men are swinging wild in the first 30 seconds, but neither is scoring with much clean offense. Lapilus dodges a right hand from Perez and comes back with a nice left hook on the other side. Perez enters the pocket awkwardly, trying to throw a spinning backfist, but before he can get the punch off, Lapilus picks him off with a left hand. Perez drops to his knees and Lapilus pulls guard with a guillotine, but the choke doesn’t look very tight. Perez pulls his head free and now takes top position with three minutes remaining in the round. Lapilus grabs for a kimura from underneath, making it difficult for Perez to accomplish much from the top. Finally, with 90 seconds left, Perez pulls the arm free and gets to work with some body shots. Lapilus holds the Mexican fighter in his guard, but Perez is upping the intensity of his punches, bashing Lapilus’ ribs with right hands.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Perez
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Perez
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Perez

Round 3

Lapilus blocks a high kick and sends a pair of punches down the middle, then runs Perez across the cage with an ugly double-leg attempt. Lapilus pushes Perez against the cage, digging for the double from his knees, but Perez denies it and reverses the position once the Frenchman stands. Lapilus is taken down but tries to slip around to climb on Perez’s back. Perez escapes out the back and the bantamweights stand with under three minutes left. Perez partially connects with a spinning backfist but gets caught by a right hook from Lapilus behind it. Perez tries a double-leg and floors Lapilus at the base of the fence with two minutes left to fight. There’s not much action on the ground down the stretch, just short punches from Perez to the body and legs of Lapilus. Inside the last 20 seconds, Perez tries to mount but is stopped and finishes in side control.

'TUF Latin America 2' 155-Pound Final: Efrain Escudero vs. Leandro Silva

Round 1

Escudero keeps a wide stance as he walks down Silva, trying to back up the Brazilian to the fence. “Buscape” steps out to the center flicking his jab and then puts a body kick across Escudero’s midsection. Silva touches with a straight right, puts a punch on Escudero’s gut and comes off the fence again with a long left. Escudero reverses the momentum and scores with a body shot of his own, but Silva comes back with a pair of body kicks before underhooking Escudero against the cage. Escudero pushes him off with two minutes left in the round and then walks into a right hook. Escudero gets in on a single-leg takedown attempt but Silva hops away. Another takedown attempt from Escudero is stuffed, only now he switches to an underhook and keeps Silva on the cage for the final 30 seconds. Silva breaks out just before the horn to land a body kick and a straight right.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Silva
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Silva
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Silva

Round 2

Silva flashes front and high kicks, trying to keep Escudero at bay as the round begins. Escudero keeps the pressure coming and walks into a left hand, then a body kick; he stays the course and takes Silva down in the center of the cage, just over a minute into the round. Silva uses butterfly hooks and tries to control Escudero’s arms, looking for a sweep. Silva pushes away with the butterflies and gets enough space to scramble up. Escudero wastes no time completing another takedown and now tries to get busy with ground-and-pound. Silva slows Escudero’s roll by threatening with a leglock, then goes back to butterfly guard. Escudero continues to pressure and control Silva on the mat in the final minute of the frame, keeping Silva weighed down. Silva finally climbs back to his feet up against the fence, but Escudero traps him there and time runs out shortly after.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Escudero
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Escudero
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Escudero

Round 3

Once again, Silva uses kicks to try and keep Escudero out of shooting range. He’s more successful early in round three, even catching Escudero with some hard, straight punches as they circle. Silva puts Escudero’s back against the fence for a few seconds, releases and tags Escudero with a left hand. “Buscape” is getting his strikes humming now, working Escudero’s body and head with clean left hands. Escudero walks right into a head-rattling right hand-elbow strike from the Brazilian. Escudero shoots for a takedown in the center, gets his head caught in a headlock, and now Silva breaks him down to his knees. Silva spins to take Escudero’s back, gets his left hook secured and works to sink the right as Escudero lands an over-the-shoulder elbow. Silva continues to work with one hook in as they enter the final minute of the bout. Silva drops a right hand, answered by another elbow over the shoulder, and they finish the fight with Silva on Escudero’s back.

'TUF Latin America 2' 170-Pound Final: Enrique Barzola vs. Horacio Gutierrez

Round 1

The lightweights spend the first 60 seconds dancing in and out of range, feinting and twitching, each trying to get the other to bite. Gutierrez comes over the top with a right hand, then nearly chops out Barzola’s lead leg with a stiff kick. Ninety seconds in now, Gutierrez continues to work from the center of the cage, moving Barzola around the outside with more leg kicks. Barzola shoots for a single-leg, comes back up to grab a rear waistlock and dumps Gutierrez to the ground. As Gutierrez kneels, Barzola tries to capitalize with punches, but the “Punisher” is able to get back on his feet. Barzola keeps hold of his opponent and winds up in top position again when Gutierrez pulls guard with a short-lived guillotine attempt. Barzola gets a little busier with his punches now, going body-head for a few seconds before Gutierrez is able to kick him away and stand. Barzola gives him no space to escape and quickly trips Gutierrez back to the mat. A hard right hand scores for Barzola in the final 30 seconds, and he finishes the round atop Gutierrez.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Barzola
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Barzola
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Barzola

Round 2

Barzola takes a low kick in order to grab hold of Gutierrez’s leg and drive him to the ground in the center of the cage. He stands over Gutierrez and comes diving back into guard with a big right hand. Gutierrez grabs for Barzola’s legs, forcing “El Fuerte” to stand and readjust. Two minutes into the round, it’s Barzola grinding from Gutierrez’s closed guard, wearing down the Jalisco native with short, brutish punches and forearm strikes. Gutierrez is getting lumped up, sporting damage on his forehead, and now Barzola adds some body punches to the mix. Barzola stands to stack up Gutierrez and splits his gloves with three or four big right hands. Gutierrez clips him with an upkick, so Barzola comes back down and puts his weight on Gutierrez from deep half guard. Gutierrez is just holding on underneath, riding out the last minute of the round. Barzola straddles Gutierrez’s head and lands elbows to the body, then a hard right hand as the horn sounds.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Barzola
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Barzola
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Barzola

Round 3

Gutierrez grabs for a takedown of his own early in round three, can’t get it, but he does manage to stuff a pair of shots from Barzola in the opening minute. Barzola tries again and puts Gutierrez on his seat with a double-leg takedown, his fifth of the fight. Gutierrez closes his guard around Barzola, throws up a triangle and eats a left hand as Barzola pulls out. Barzola doesn’t allow Gutierrez to stand, instead controlling his legs until the Peruvian opts to come back down into Gutierrez’s guard. Half the round remains and while Gutierrez doesn’t appear badly hurt, he does seem exhausted and unable to escape Barzola’s heavy top control. Barzola postures up and thumps Gutierrez’s body with punches on both sides. Barzola smothers Gutierrez’s mouth and drives short elbow strikes into his head while it’s pinned against the mat. Gutierrez tries to kick him away but Barzola’s pressure is too much; this looks like a done deal. A last-ditch armbar attempt from Gutierrez goes nowhere, and the lightweight winner of “TUF: Latin America” Season 2 will be decided by the judges.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Barzola (30-27 Barzola)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-8 Barzola (30-26 Barzola)
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Barzola (30-27 Barzola)

Enrique Marin vs. Erick Montano

Round 1

Montano sticks a long left hand in Marin’s face and slides backward as Marin attacks with a leg kick. The welterweights tie up and it’s Montano shoving Marin against the fence with underhooks. Marin slides out the side and the “TUF” finalists reset one minute into the fight. Marin lands a leg kick, blocks one from Montano upstairs but takes a kick on the body. Montano throws some oblique kicks to create space as Marin backs him up to the fence. They clinch again before Montano briefly drops down to try a double-leg takedown. Marin spins him around to try a single; he can’t finish either. Montano runs him off the fence and down to the ground in the center of the cage, but Marin sweeps to top position immediately. With one minute left, Marin passes to half guard. Montano kicks him away and scrambles back to his feet, where he touches Marin with a couple jabs. Montano eats an uppercut in an exchange and comes back up on the other side to land a right hook. Marin denies a pair of late takedown attempts and swings to put Montano on the run as time runs out.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Marin
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Marin
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Marin

Round 2

Montano charges at Marin and clubs him with a big right hook, but Marin absorbs the shot and changes levels to ground Montano with another double-leg. Montano sits up against the fence and tries to stand, only to have his legs yanked out from underhim. One minute in, Montano hits the switch and turns the tables by wrapping his arms around Marin’s legs as they grapple at the fence. Marin grabs for a kneebar or heel hook from underneath and Montano grabs the fence, drawing several verbal warnings from referee Gary Copeland before he releases. Marin sweeps to top position seconds later and now holds Montano in ride position with three minutes left, landing short right hands to the head. Montano powers back to his feet, now looking extremely tired, his hands hanging low as he plods toward Marin, who picks at the Mexican fighter’s legs with kicks from the outside. Marin ducks under a spinning kick but comes up short as he tries to punch Montano on the turn-around. A single-leg attempt from Marin with 90 seconds left is stuffed by Montano, so Marin holds him on the cage with underhooks instead. They walk off the fence and back to the middle with 40 seconds on the clock. Marin sends a few right hands over the top as Montano tries to resume his oblique kicks from round one, but the strikes don’t have as much steam behind them now.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Montano
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Marin
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Marin

Round 3

As the third round begins, Marin marches on Montano, who looks to slow his opponent with low kicks and jabs. Marin seems to have the snappier punches at this late stage, but he’s not throwing much, and now Montano wraps him up for a clinch on the fence. There’s not much action in the tie-up, and the welterweights split with just about half the round remaining. Now it’s Marin’s turn to dig an underhook and pin Montano to the fence, where the action stalls again. They separate with 90 seconds left, the round and possibly the fight still up for grabs. Montano lands a body kick, throws a few side kicks and deflect’s one of Marin’s rare combinations. Montano hits a double-leg takedown with 20 seconds left and ends the fight in Marin’s half guard.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Montano (29-28 Montano)

Henry Cejudo vs. Jussier da Silva

Round 1

Cejudo opens the striking with a push kick to the gut of “Formiga,” who bounces on his toes in the center of the cage. The wrestler steps into the pocket to throw a pair of hard punches, but da Silva gets his gloves up to deflect the shots. Cejudo sends a stiff right hand down the middle, gets turned around throwing a low kick and has to back out of range as Formiga tries to close the distance. Formiga lands an overhand right that backs up Cejudo to the fence, then denies a clinch attempt from the American. Da Silva clinches to deliver a knee to the body and a right hand upstairs, then releases and resets in the middle. Two minutes left in the opening round, the flyweights tangle up again and trade knees to the body. They split and Formiga bombs back into the clinch with wide punches, then scores with more knees before they disengage. Formiga sticks the incoming Cejudo with a straight right and circles off as Cejudo tries to push him on the fence. Cejudo puts an overhand right on Formiga’s ear, dropping the Brazilian momentarily, but da Silva bounces back up to score with more clinch knees to the body. Cejudo drives forward and hits a takedown just before the horn.

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Cejudo
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Cejudo
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Cejudo

Round 2

Cejudo lands a left hook that leaves Formiga swinging a wide overhand right. Da Silva is trying to get inside to strike but Cejudo is picking him off with stiff right-handed counters. Cejudo whiffs on a hook, gets tied up by Formiga and dings the Brazilian with a knee to the body. Another brief clinch yields another hard knee to the gut, but this time Formiga strikes back with a cracking right hand. Halfway through the round and the fight now, and the flyweights remain toe to toe in the middle of the cage. There’s more clinching down the stretch, more knees from Formiga and a few in return from Cejudo, who looks to throw da Silva off one of the breaks and is stuffed. Formiga doubles up his jab and gets out of the way of Cejudo’s return fire. Cejudo threatens with a late takedown, then backs off and takes one more right hand from Formiga at the end of a much closer round.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Cejudo
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 da Silva
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Cejudo

Round 3

The 125ers clinch in the middle of the cage again, but neither can do anything before a cautious separation. Formiga blocks a high kick, grabs an overhook with his left arm to deliver a knee to the body on the other side. Cejudo sticks a jab and ducks in behind it to push Formiga against the fence. The wrestler changes levels, lifts and slams Formiga to the mat, but the Brazilian is barely on the ground for a second before he springs back to his feet. They’re back to the clinch midway through the final frame, locked in a stalemate in the center of the cage. Cejudo lands a knee to the body, an elbow and then breaks away. With 90 seconds on the clock, Cejudo uses an underhook to pin Formiga to the fence. They walk back to the middle, where Cejudo slams Formiga’s face with a hard elbow in the clinch. Formiga connects with a right hook on the break but is quickly put back on the fence, where Cejudo rides out the remainder of the round in the outside position.

Diego Sanchez vs. Ricardo Lamas

Round 1

Sanchez pins his left glove to his face and blocks a pair of early right high kicks. Now it’s Lamas’ turn to put up his dukes and deflect a couple punches. A stiff jab scores for Lamas before he circles away from Sanchez’s return fire. Lamas tries a flying knee, but it’s sidestepped by Sanchez and countered with a right hand. Lamas zaps Sanchez with a jab, a right hand, then pushes him away with a side kick to the chest. “The Bully” tries a few wheel kicks but Sanchez stays clear of them and continues to press forward. Inside the last two minutes, Lamas grabs a high double and runs Sanchez to the ground near the fence. Sanchez pops back up, but Lamas keeps a rear waistlock as they lean on the fence. Sanchez puts a hand on the mat to avoid knees to the head. Lamas hits a lovely foot sweep and tries to climb on Sanchez’s back, but Sanchez scrambles up before Lamas can get his hooks secured.

Sanchez drives elbows sideways into Lamas’ head, opening a small cut and forcing Lamas to temporarily abandon the takedown attempt. Back down goes Lamas, digging hard for a single-leg. More elbows from Sanchez have Lamas standing upright again, and now Sanchez is able to circle out of the clinch. A massive inside leg kick takes out Sanchez’s right leg, but he keeps his footing and backpedals to prop himself up on the fence. Lamas keeps his range and tags Sanchez with a few precise right hands while “The Nightmare” grits his teeth, waiting for a firefight which doesn’t come. Lamas hits a takedown near the fence, but Sanchez hits the switch and tries a guillotine in the transition. Lamas gets his head free and sweeps back to top position, but Sanchez gets another reversal inside the last minute of the round. Lamas nearly climbs on Sanchez’s back before the featherweights scramble back up with seconds to go. Lamas finishes the round with another hard leg kick and a left hand that backs up Sanchez to the cage.

Round 3

Sanchez pushes the action early in the final frame, and his right leg looks to have recovered as he stomps forward on “The Bully.” He catches Lamas leaning in with a right hand and strikes back with a high knee to the chest. Lamas whirls around with a spinning kick, gets shoved to the ground and jumps up to resume striking. The next kick to Sanchez’s right leg puts him on the ground, but he jumps up and hops backward on the left leg, drawing a deep breath as Lamas presses forward. Lamas gets an underhook with his left arm and holds Sanchez on the fence as they hit the halfway mark of round three. Sanchez lands a couple more elbows in the process of defending the takedown, but it’s Lamas breaking out of the position with a spinning backfist that slices Sanchez above his right eye. Inside the final two minutes now, Lamas sticks a jab and threatens with another leg kick that gets Sanchez to check. Sanchez catches a right high kick on his shoulder, can’t capitalize before Lamas yanks back the leg. Lamas circles away from Sanchez in the final minute, dodging the veteran’s last-ditch bursts of offense.

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Neil Magny

Round 1

Veteran official “Big” John McCarthy is the referee for tonight’s 170-pound main event, with judges Eric Colon, Marcos Rosales and Cardo Urso scoring at cageside. Magny uses his long arms to try and grab the head of Gastelum, who pulls away and then comes inside to stick a left hand down the middle. Magny lands a jab, fakes a knee and then slides backward as Gastelum comes forward. Gastelum has put a few hard kicks on Magny’s lead leg here in the first two minutes. A left high kick is blocked by Magny but he seems slightly stunned by it nonetheless. Magny quickly clinches up and hits a takedown, then transitions to take Gastelum’s back. Before Magny get get his hooks in, Gastelum slips out the back and hits the switch. They scramble up and Gastelum throws Magny back to the ground, where Magny sweeps and nearly mounts Gastelum, landing a few elbows on the way. Gastelum gives up his back and Magny wraps an arm around the neck but doesn’t get his hooks in. Gastelum turns over, giving up mount, then rolls again, leaving Magny on his back with just over a minute to go. Gastelum peels away Magny’s arm and turns into him, but Magny maintains top position with half guard and then steps over to full mount. Gastelum rolls to his knees, waits for Magny to climb on his back and then explodes up to spend the final 20 seconds on his feet.

Round 2

Gastelum marches on Magny, pumping out hard punches but pulling up short as the taller man slides backward. Gastelum backs him up to the fence again, digs an underhook on the right side and holds Magny against a cage post. Magny denies a level change and takedown attempt, then escapes the clinch about 90 seconds into the round. A loud body kick scores for Gastelum, so Magny charges him across the cage to land a speedy three-punch combination. Magny backs up to the fence and covers his face with his gloves, prompting Gastelum to bomb with a combination. It looks like a bit of rope-a-dope from Magny, who comes back upright unharmed and sticks out his tongue. Magny grabs a waistlock on the fence and nearly gets reversed as he and Gastelum roll to the ground. Gastelum winds up on the bottom, posts and stands, but he’s still held on the fence by Magny as they fight in the final minute. With 30 seconds left, Magny hits another trip takedown and climbs on Gastelum’s back again.

Round 3

Gastelum starts the round with a spark, rushing Magny with a pair of hard punches which come up just short. Magny tries a clinch, Gastelum slips out and takes a jab as he stands on the fence. Magny drops down for a takedown behind a right hand; Gastelum sprawls and winds up on his knees, but Magny allows him to stand and they circle back to the center. Gastelum lands a right hook, a leg kick and walks Magny to the fence. Magny circles off and resumes his jabbing, dancing and bouncing on his toes in front of his slower opponent. Gastelum chases after him but only walks into more jabs from the massive welterweight. A clinch from Gastelum is reversed and he’s run to the ground by Magny, but he jumps up before Magny can secure top position. One minute left in round three, the 170-pounders tangle with over-unders, then Magny pushes the fight to the fence. Gastelum reverses to the outside position, gets turned around again and is dragged to the ground. Gastelum gets up instantly but still has Magny wrapped around his waist. Gastelum rolls through and winds up on top just before the horn.

Round 4

Magny doubles up his jab and follows through with a cracking right hand down the middle. The welterweights exchange jabs and clash leg kicks as they circle in the center for the first minute of the round. Magny slips a pair of punches but circles out of the exchange with his hands down, and he never sees Gastelum’s right hook coming. The punch drops Magny to his back, and Gastelum pounces to try and pound out the finish. Magny puts his back on the mat and tries to hold Gastelum in side control, while the “TUF” winner grinds on Magny’s face with forearms, looking for a mounted crucifix. Two minutes into the round, Gastelum postures up in Magny’s half guard to land an elbow. Magny takes some short punches to the face as he works back to his feet in the center. Gastelum holds a rear waistlock as they stand, then cracks Magny with a hard left hand as they break. Magny hits the deck again, this time nearer the fence, but he stands up as Gastelum tries to get on his back. With 70 seconds on the clock, Gastelum hugs Magny against the fence with a rear waistlock. Magny spins out and resets but he doesn’t look fully recovered from the pair of knockdowns. He shoots for a takedown, gets Gastelum to turn his back and holds him against the cage for a moment. Gastelum escapes in the closing seconds and walks after Magny, who looks to have regained his footing as time expires.

Round 5

Gastelum gets a takedown near the fence and works from Magny’s open guard, controlling the longer man’s wrists and pinning him to the mat. Magny throws up a triangle, can’t catch Gastelum but uses the submission threat to escape back to his feet. Magny uses his left hand to tee up Gastelum’s head against the cage and comes across the center with a nice right hand. Gastelum denies a Magny takedown attempt and bombs with punches which force Magny to cover up. Two minutes remain as the welterweights move along the perimeter of the cage. Magny takes a hard right hook, circles away and gets a shot to the body when Gastelum catches up. Magny backs up to the other side of the cage, flicking out jabs to try and keep Gastelum at bay. They tangle and it’s Magny coming up with a rear waistlock, dragging Gastelum to the ground twice before secure back-mount with both hooks in. Gastelum flips over to take top position with 30 seconds remaining, grabs a can opener and passes to half guard. Gastelum is dropping hard shots from half guard until the final horn, and this one will go to the judges for what should be an interesting decision.
