UFC President Dana White: I’m ‘Getting Into Boxing, 100 Percent’
Dana White’s plans to venture into the boxing realm are becoming
more concrete.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday during a media gathering at the Wild West Boxing Club in Santa Monica, Calif., the UFC president said that he’s “getting into boxing, 100 percent.” White had previously stated that he could see the UFC bringing boxing “under our umbrella.”
White confirmed that he is in the process of obtaining a boxing
promoter’s license. However, the new endeavor does not mean White
will be stepping down from his current role with the UFC.
“I’m not leaving the UFC. I’m getting into boxing with [WME/IMG head] Ari [Emanuel] and the UFC will be doing boxing, too,” White told the Times. “It’s still early. We’re still working on it. I’ve got to get my [stuff] together, but I’m getting into boxing, man. It’s coming.”
During promotion for the “Money Fight” between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, White could occasionally be seen wearing a Zuffa Boxing T-shirt. For now, it is unclear what the name of the promotion will ultimately be. White realizes that there is plenty a work ahead to make a UFC boxing venture a reality.
“It’s harder than saying we’re getting into boxing. We still have to get some homework done,” White said. “I feel like I can do it better than everyone else. I love the sport.”
