UFC on ESPN 16 is full steam ahead after every fighter on the card made weight.
The Ultiamte Fighting Championship returns to ESPN airwaves with a card from Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, this weekend. Headlining the event is a women’s bantamweight bout between former champion Holly Holm and rising contender Irene Aldana.
While Holm (13-5) has lost five times since dethroning Ronda Rousey with a sensational head kick, she remains a top contender having challenged for both the bantamweight and featherweight belts since then. “The Preacher’s Daughter” has won two of her last three having earned decisions over Megan Anderson and Raquel Pennington. At 38, Holm will look to prove that she’s still got gas left in the tank. The Jackson-Wink MMA fighter had no issue making weight and came in at 136 pounds.
This marks the first headlining bout for Aldana (12-5), who is riding a two-fight win streak over Vanessa Melo and Ketlen Vieira. The Mexican fighter has won five of her last six bouts inside the Octagon with the only recent blemish being a split decision loss to Pennington. The Lobo Gym representative will hope to earn a title shot with an impressive showing. Like her opponent, Aldana took full advantage of the one-pound allowance and came in at 136 pounds.
The UFC on ESPN 16 prelims will stream live on ESPN+ starting at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT. The main card will air live on ESPN and ESPN+ starting at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT.
