Victoria Leonardo (125.5) vs. Manon Fiorot (126)

Round 1

In the middle of this short stint on Fight Island, the UFC comes at fans with a Wednesday card that will be going on at the same time as some other thing people are watching. We’re here for the fights, with a 14-fight card that requires fans to get out some coffee for this match starting in the women’s flyweight division. A pair of newcomers battle it out to begin the day, as Contender Series signee Leonardo (8-2, 0-0 UFC) comes to blows with French kickboxer Fiorot (5-1, 0-0 UFC). The referee for this opening bout is Lukasz Bosacki, and the two flyweights do not touch gloves before coming out swinging. Instead, Fiorot is ready with kicks to the body and legs, and Leonardo absorbs them and tries to fire back. “Fury” throws with early fury, but the Frenchwoman dances out of the way as she paws out side kicks to the body. Leonardo aims a low kick to the knee, and looks to time an overhand right, but she falls short. Fiorot stays in distinct kickboxing range, booting Leonardo in the face with a kick. The American wears it well, and Fiorot tees off on her from afar with long reaching kicks. Leonardo cannot find her range, so she charges into a clinch and narrowly avoids a brief punch combination. Leonardo crashes the pocket but gets tagged to the body and head by the newcomer from France. While Leonardo looks to strike her way in, Fiorot greets her with strikes but cannot keep Leonardo off of her. Instead, Fiorot works the body a few times, so the two separate, allowing Leonardo to reach with a right hand only to get smacked with a heavy elbow. Fiorot tattoos her foot on Leonardo’s body and head, leading “Fury” to charge in and clinch. Leonardo gets met with several knees up the middle as she does this, and a few punches knock her hair tie out. Fiorot stuns Leonardo with a combination, and Leonardo stumbles out of the way as she just avoids a spinning wheel kick that brushes by her loosed hair. Fiorot clinches up, scoring a stiff knee and a few punches that ring Leonardo’s bell. A single body kick from Leonardo scores, so Fiorot tries to give it back to her with a spinning back kick but she is too close. The two stare at each other to end the round, and Fiorot briefly puts her hands on her hips to take a deep breath as the horn sounds.

Sherdog Scores

Jay Pettry scores the round: 10-9 Fiorot
Tudor Leonte scores the round: 10-9 Fiorot
John Brannigan scores the round: 10-9 Fiorot

Round 2

Leonardo rushes out of her corner with strikes to begin the second frame, likely sensing she dropped the first five-minute period. Fiorot is ready to counter her with sharp strikes including a check right hook, and Leonardo is stuck hitting little but air as the Frenchwoman dances out of the way. Fiorot stabs her foot out to the midsection to push Leonardo away, and “Fury” tries to close the distance with strikes. Fiorot uses solid head movement to evade most strikes, brushing off high kicks and even thwarting a takedown attempt with ease. Leonardo lands a single right hand, and manages to avoid the counter strikes but it is one-and-done. Leonardo flips up a high kick that Fiorot slaps away, and it is the Frenchwoman who comes in to clinch up and pursue a takedown. Leonardo gets lifted up in the air and planted on her back, where Fiorot takes half guard with ease as she immediately starts dropping down elbows and punches. Leonardo kicks off the cage and is able to get her foe back to guard before pushing Fiorot away to stand back up. Fiorot blocks three punches and a head kick without any concern, and springs forward to land a few punches. When Leonardo blitzes her, Fiorot clips her with a check hook. Fiorot unleashes a hellacious combination that has Leonardo hurt, and “Fury” turns away from this furious barrage. A head kick gets the damage started as Leonardo turns away, and a stream of punches overwhelms her until Bosacki has no choice but to step in. A standing TKO is the call, and this was a spectacular debut for the French fighter on short notice.

The Official Result

Manon Fiorot def. Victoria Leonardo R2 4:08 via TKO (Head Kick and Punches)

Umar Nurmagomedov (136) vs. Sergey Morozov (135)

Round 1

Shifting gears to the bantamweight category, two more fighters making their first splash in the Octagon go at it when Nurmagomedov (12-0, 0-0 UFC) – cousin of the current UFC lightweight champ – faces Kazakhstan’s Morozov (16-4, 0-0 UFC). The glove touch comes before referee Jason Herzog, and this matchup featuring what was once the biggest betting favorite on the card (Nurmagomedov at -500) is now underway. The two begin tentatively, as Morozov aims a punch or two to the body while Nurmagomedov slaps at him with a low kick. Nurmagomedov fires up a quick head kick that collides off the chin, and Morozov eats it and throws back with a left hand and a hook. The Dagestani fighter gets off another leg kick, and he takes a body punch for his effort. Another head kick comes from Nurmagomedov, who switches stances to befuddle his foe, but Morozov does not appear too concerned. A front kick pushes off Morozov’s cup, and there is no pause as instead Morozov looks for an overhand right. Morozov times a right hand on a kick from his opponent, so Nurmagomedov decides to change levels and attack a takedown. As Morozov scrambles, Nurmagomedov circles around to take Morozov’s back and leap on his back like a Dagestani backpack. Morozov walks them over to his own corner, so Nurmagomedov lets go and slams him down. The fighter out of Kazakhstan rolls through to try to escape, and Nurmagomedov follows him well. This roll happens again, and Morozov wildly scrambles to burst out of the position and stand up. As they look to reset, Morozov scores a leg kick and a head kick, and Nurmagomedov swings and misses in response with an overhand left. Nurmagomedov fires off high kicks with each leg, and he greets a charging Morozov with a front kick that splits the guard. Nurmagomedov is able to break free from a brief clinch, and he stings Morozov with a body kick and is quick to sling a head kick right after. Nurmagomedov just barely misses a speedy head kick, and Morozov looks to get him back with a looping hook. The champ’s cousin ducks down and hits a takedown, and he takes back control to ride out the round.

Jay Pettry scores the round: 10-9 Nurmagomedov
Tudor Leonte scores the round: 10-9 Nurmagomedov
John Brannigan scores the round: 10-9 Nurmagomedov

Round 2

The opening seconds of the round leads to a huge head kick from Nurmagomedov, rocking the Kazakhstani fighter and allowing Nurmagomedov to work him on the fence with heavy punches. Morozov manages to clear out the cobwebs and break away, and he has his legs about him again as Nurmagomedov targets another high kick. Morozov stuffs a takedown attempt and blocks a high kick, and Nurmagomedov is ready with several more to the body and head. When Morozov leaves a left hand out a little too long, Nurmagomedov pops forward and lands a solid right hook. Morozov and Nurmagomedov go shin-to-shin with a checked kick, and Nurmagomedov shoots in low for a takedown and gets it. Morozov crawls to a knee, and as he tries to escape, Nurmagomedov takes his back and leaps on. Morozov bucks him off, but Nurmagomedov is quick to ground him and pursue standing back control again. Nurmagomedov pressures his man down to the ground against the corner of the fence, and with hooks in he lands some solid ground-and-pound before fishing for a choke attempt. Morozov breaks the grip and gives up his neck, and in an instant, Nurmagomedov snatches up a rear-naked choke. The choke is lethally tight, and Morozov twists and turns, trying with all his might to break the grip. There is nothing he can do, and instead of tapping, he just goes out. Herzog recognizes that Morozov is in dreamland immediately and halts the fight. Nurmagomedov is now a clean 13-0 after putting a solid foe to sleep with a choke. Serving as his post-fight interview translator is UFC champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, who beams with pride for his victorious cousin.

The Official Result

Umar Nurmagomedov def. Sergey Morozov R2 3:39 via Technical Submission (Rear-Naked Choke)

Mike Davis (154.5) vs. Mason Jones (156)

Round 1

Kicking things up to the lightweight division, Davis (8-2, 1-1 UFC) is the first fighter on the card so far with UFC experience, serving as the greeter for ex-Cage Warriors two-division champ Jones (10-0, 0-0 UFC). The match just had all its remaining nonsense crushed by referee Keith Peterson, and it does not begin with a glove touch. Instead, Davis scores a quick spinning back kick to the body, and the two are ready to brawl. Davis comes at him with another spinning kick, and he transitions his momentum into follow-up strikes. The unbeaten fighter tries to gather himself and land a few shots, but Davis is elusive and sticks him with a few left hands. Jones aims a front kick, but he gets cracked over the top. Davis chases after him with a few punches and a kick that punctuates the combination. Davis lands a solid calf kick, and both men trade heavy punches. As the Welshman goes after a right hand, Davis shoots in for a takedown and gets it. “The Dragon” decides he will try to slug it out from underneath, and Davis thanks him with some heavy ground-and-pound. Jones springs back to his feet, and the two trade leather and both target low calf kicks to great effect. Jabs land at the same time, and when Jones catches a punch, Davis shoots in for a takedown. Davis gets stuffed, but he redoubles his effort after getting tagged and hits the takedown he is seeking. Jones is able to fight his way up and avoid a choke attempt, so Davis drags him into a Thai clinch and tries to nail him with a right hand. Jones pushes off and gets his own right hand off, and these two guys are putting on a show. Davis leaps in the air with a head kick reminiscent of something Yves Edwards would throw, and Jones barely blocks it as Davis pressures him while landing shots. Jones lands a calf kick and greets the American with a stiff uppercut. As Jones starts to unload on his opponent, Davis changes levels and takes the fight down. Jones kicks him off, but Davis grabs his back and hunts for a trip takedown. Davis leaps in the air with a flying knee, cracking his foe but not rattling him. Jones tries to fire back, but time expires in the round.

Jay Pettry scores the round: 10-9 Davis
Tudor Leonte scores the round: 10-9 Davis
John Brannigan scores the round: 10-9 Davis

Round 2

The Welshman rushes out of his corner to attack, and Davis is right there to meet him with long left hands. Jones lands several strikes of his own, so Davis hurts him with a calf kick and makes Jones fall to the ground. Jones manages to scramble back up and gets off his own calf kick, but Davis takes him down again. Jones once more pops back up, and he tags Davis with a fierce uppercut. Jones hurts Davis with a right hand, and then another forces Davis to shoot in for a takedown. Davis recovers and spins with a back kick to the body, but Jones is right there in front of him as he lands several quick punches. Davis fires back with his own salvo, forcing Jones to take a step back. Jones is not slowing down, getting off a spinning back kick and eating shots as he works his way in. Davis barely misses with a standing up-elbow, and Jones targets him with accurate strikes including another problematic calf kick. When Jones gathers himself, Davis cracks him with a right hand, a low kick, and another right hand. Davis sweeps the leg, and Jones stays upright and lands a couple punches. The Welshman misses with a spinning wheel kick, allowing Davis to throw back at him. Jones pushes his foe into the fence, landing a couple shots and backing up before Davis can counter him. Both land crisp left hands at the same time, and Jones checks a kick. Davis throws a body kick with the other foot, and Jones rushes through it to work the body. The two lightweights get off hard shots as they crash together and back away several times, and Davis again works the lead leg but Jones’ boxing is giving Davis pause. A clinch does not lead to much, and instead Jones lands shots high and low. Davis suddenly springs out to attack, knocking Jones’ mouthpiece out with a ferocious combination. Davis chains several punches together, and his high kick glances off the shoulder and allows Jones to take the fight down. Landing on top, Jones gets off a few strikes to conclude this thrilling frame.

John Brannigan scores the round: 10-9 Davis

Round 3

The two lightweights touch gloves to celebrate their hard-fought battle, and Jones picks up right where he left off by getting into his opponent’s face. Jones lands heavy punches but Davis stands tall and throws right back, getting off a crisp uppercut that knocks Jones’ head back. Davis slings a head kick that is barely blocked, forcing the Welshman to shoot in for a distant takedown. Davis stops it and scores an elbow that slashes open the unbeaten fighter’s face, so Jones breaks away and lands a few punches. In the center of the cage, the two brawl with a head kick sprinkled in for good measure. Jones presses his foot into Davis’ chest, and both land punches at the same time. A one-two from Jones is rolled through by Davis, who tries to land body kicks. Davis circles away with an uppercut, catching Jones on the way in but not slowing him down. Davis lands a solid left hook, and Jones eats it like a sandwich and throws back with a one-two. Jones slings a spinning wheel kick, and as Davis pushes it away, Jones lands a few punches. A one-two from Davis shakes up Jones, but the Welshman gathers his thoughts and plods forward. Simultaneous exchanges continue for the two strikers, who are putting up impressive striking totals. Jones mixes things up with a takedown attempt, and Davis pushes him away and lands a few strikes ending with a hard knee. “Beast Boy” works the lead calf a few times, and Jones trudges on to continue attacking. Both land short clinch strikes, and Davis blocks a spinning back elbow and Jones rushes in to attack. When Davis lands a body kick, Jones gives him one back. Davis has a takedown attempt stopped, and Jones pays him back with several body shots as he pushes Davis into the fence. Jones gets kneed on the way in, and he starts teeing off on Davis as seconds are left in the round. Davis shucks and moves, but he eats several punches while trying to evade the damage. The horn sounds as Davis throws a head kick, and this close bout with early “Fight of the Night” consideration ends thrillingly.

Francisco Figueiredo (126) vs. Jerome Rivera (126)

Round 1

Dropping down to flyweight, one more new fighter with a famous surname competes, when Figueiredo (11-3-1, 1 NC; 0-0 UFC) – brother of the UFC flyweight champ – takes on Rivera (10-3, 0-1 UFC). The third man inside the cage is referee Marc Goddard, and they think about touching gloves but do not do so before throwing down. Figueiredo starts things off with kicks high and low, looking to act as his nickname sake of a “Sniper” from afar. Rivera plays the same game, kicking until he powers his way into the clinch. Figueiredo turns him about into the fence, and they jockey for position while getting off a few short strikes. Figueiredo sneaks in an elbow, and tries to get off one more on the break but the American sees it coming and separates. Figueiredo kicks the body, and then punches at the body while Rivera retreats and lands a leg kick. Figueiredo connects with another body kick, and Rivera nearly kicks his legs out with a calf kick. As they clinch up in the center of the cage, Figueiredo sweeps him out to slam Rivera down. Figueiredo is already in side control, but Rivera scrambles to tie him back up in a closed guard. The Brazilian gets stuck in a body triangle from the fighter beneath him, but he connects with several elbows and a big punch to break the lock. Figueiredo tries to pop back up so he can get out of the guard and find a better position, but upkicks from Rivera keep him at bay until the American springs up. Rivera leads with a left hand, and Figueiredo steps in and headbutts him on the chin accidentally. There is no pause, and instead the clinch persists for a few seconds until they break. Rivera aims a few leg kicks and punches over the top, and a head kick glances over the Brazilian’s forehead. Rivera leaps forward into a takedown, and he overshoots his target and still manages to get his hands on his foe. An unusual exchange begins, ending when the round ends with Figueiredo’s back pressed on the cage wall.

Round 2

Rivera practically sprints at his opponent, charging forward with a right hand. Figueiredo ducks out of the way, and he gets off a low kick before Rivera lands a few leg kicks of his own. The two kick it out down low as Figueiredo nods at him, and Figueiredo ducks down to complete a takedown and may have headbutted Rivera again on the way in. Rivera locks down his opponent to halt any strikes, before throwing up his legs to flirt with a triangle choke. Figueiredo pounds his way out of the leg placement, landing several hammerfists while Rivera throws some back at him. When Figueiredo tries to pass guard, Rivera halts him and pats him on his back – thankfully this playful exchange is not regarded as a tapout, even though the way Rivera patted his back, it could have been seen as some sort of a surrender. Figueiredo stacks him up against the fence, landing down a few heavy punches from above, before crashing down into Rivera’s guard. Rivera looks to wriggle out of the place, and he pulls Figueiredo back into his guard. Rivera cinches up a body triangle again, but opts to wall-walk and get off upkicks as Figueiredo stands back up again. Rivera keeps attacking with his long legs until Figueiredo has no choice but to walk away so he doesn’t get popped by one of those kicks like he were James Vick. Figueiredo tries to clinch him up when Rivera stands, and Rivera turns him around and lands a few short knees. “The Renegade” walks his man down, but it is Figueiredo who lands strikes to the body. Rivera is well shy of the mark with a long head kick, and Figueiredo snipes him with a left hook as Rivera comes in on him. Figueiredo lands this strike again, and Rivera is no worse for wear as he takes a leg kick after it. Rivera lands a body kick, and when Figueiredo catches it, he nods at his American counterpart. Figueiredo lets the kick go to clinch up, and the round ends in this position.

Round 3

Rivera looks to set up the jab in the early going of the final frame, and Figueiredo slaps a leg kick while Rivera tries to reach with kicks from the outside. Rivera kicks low with both legs, and Rivera swings and misses with a one-two. As Rivera winds up on a strike, Figueiredo latches on to him and clinches up, before pressing Rivera into the fence and landing a trip takedown. Rivera is able to get out of the position no worse for wear, and he thanks his opponent by pounding a leg kick home. Rivera comes up short with follow-up punches, but a left hand rings Figueiredo’s bell. Rivera capitalizes on the strike by landing another, and Figueiredo retreats before grabbing on to clinch up and stall the fight out. The Brazilian aims for another sweep to take the fight down, but Rivera is wise to it and changes levels for his own single leg takedown. While Figueiredo defends, Rivera thinks about a back take, but elects to sternly knee Figueiredo in the face three times. Figueiredo does not like these strikes, so he powers out of the position, only to get pushed back into the fence and take a shoulder strike on the jaw. Figueiredo spins around and nearly takes the back, but he transitions into a takedown attempt and almost allows Rivera to jump guard with a triangle choke. Rivera gets his feet beneath him, and Figueiredo separates for a moment. As Figueiredo advances, Rivera elbows him in the face. The Brazilian takes a knee on the forehead, and he tries to clinch up to stop the impressive strikes of “The Renegade.” Rivera gets out of harm’s way and starts brawling, and the two men engage in a mighty slugfest that hurts Figueiredo. When Figueiredo grabs to take him down, Rivera uses a head lock to reverse the position and start pounding away on Figueiredo. Strikes mount for Rivera, but Figueiredo keeps the clinch and slams one final takedown to conclude the fight.

Dalcha Lungiambula (186) vs. Markus Perez (186)

Round 1

Up next in what could be a violent one is the middleweight debut of hulking striker Lungiambula (10-2, 1-1 UFC), who takes on crafty grappler and Joker impersonator “Maluko” Perez (12-4, 2-4 UFC). Drawing the assignment is referee Herb Dean, who oversees this potential slugfest and witnesses the two touch gloves to kick things off. Perez opens up with a body kick, and Lungiambula gives a kick back to his opponent early. Perez swings and misses with a leg kick that turns him around, and he regathers himself with a head kick that gets blocked. Lungiambula charges at him with a few punches, and Perez ducks out of the way before getting clipped. Perez lands a low kick, and Lungiambula blitzes him with punches before considering a takedown. Lungiambula lifts Perez up in the air and hammers him down hard with a slam. Lungiambula falls into a guillotine choke, and Perez defends with the submission while “Champion” pops his head out in half guard. Lungiambula postures up by grinding his elbow into his opponent’s face, and Perez recovers guard and keeps his legs high to tie up his powerful adversary. Lungiambula lands a single right hand as he tries to get space, and Perez’ face is already marked up. The Brazilian pulls his leg up with a rubber guard, and looks to tie up the shoulder with an omoplata, but Lungiambula shrugs it off and pushes away a subsequent triangle attempt shortly after. When Lungiambula drills him with a right hand, Perez throws his right leg up again, but again it is rebuffed by the South African. Perez snatches up the neck for another guillotine choke, and he uses the maneuver to stand up. When Lungiambula allows him back up, Perez pursues a brabo choke, but Lungiambula shakes it off. “Maluko” presses his full body weight into his muscular opponent, landing a few punches and a glancing spinning wheel kick as the round concludes.

Round 2

A glove touch opens the round, as Perez chambers and eventually throws a body kick. Lungiambula swings and misses with an overhand right, so Perez darts out of the way and lands a punch to the body. Perez targets the body with kicks on both sides, and Lungiambula swings so hard in response that he falls over. Perez wings an overhand right, and Lungiambula rolls with it and fires back with ferocious punches. Lungiambula ends a combination with a leg kick, and Perez sticks him with a right hand but gets clipped by a few punches. A punch to the body practically lifts Perez off the ground, and Lungiambula uses the momentum to bowl the Brazilian over. Perez tries to defend with a triangle choke before scrambling to walk up the wall, and Lungiambula keeps heavy pressure to try to keep him grounded. Perez locks in a kimura to reverse the position, and his two-on-one wrist control is nearly locked in while he falls to his back. Lungiambula straightens his arm out and starts slamming down punches and elbows to the body, but Perez is still latched on to that limb. Perez bails on the submission and tries to hack with elbows from below, but Lungiambula wings a few big punches and jumps up to pass guard and take side control. While Perez gets his man back to guard, Lungiambula gets off a few heavy punches and a nasty elbow that makes Perez turn to his side. Perez sits up to pursue a takedown of his own, and Lungiambula defends it and lands some powerful punches that are on the line of the back of the head. A strike from Lungiambula opens up a huge cut on Perez, who is gushing blood as Lungiambula nails him with elbows. The round ends as “Champion” rains down elbows.

Round 3

Lungiambula opens up with a front kick and an overhand right, and Perez is off-balance as he gets blasted with a right hook. Perez aims a body kick, and Lungiambula fires a right hand that is barely ducked in time. Perez ties up his opponent on the fence, and he stalls out for a time before Lungiambula knees him in the chest a few times. Lungiambula tries to maneuver into a Thai clinch and slash up elbows, but Perez greets him with a few knees as they grind it out on the fence. Perez spins suddenly with an elbow, and Lungiambula almost completely ignores it. The South African wings a few punches that clatter off his foe’s guard, and Perez ducks down with a solid left hand. Lungiambula nearly falls over punching his way in, so Perez grabs him and mashes him into the fence again. Perez kicks the leg and knees up high, allowing Lungiambula to deliver knee payloads to the chest. Dean implores the fighters to work, so Perez backs off and gets cracked. Lungiambula tries to time Perez coming in with bombs, but the Brazilian successfully changes levels to avoid the strikes and attacks a double leg takedown. Lungiambula stays upright as he fights off the position, and Dean again asks them to keep working. Perez gives up on the takedown, but the grind continues as Dean once more tells them to actually fight. When Perez switches it up for a lower takedown, Dean breaks them up. Lungiambula swings for the fences to thank Dean for the stoppage, leading Perez to crash in and grind some more. A knee from Lungiambula clacks of the peninsula south of the Equator, and Perez takes a moment to recover. Perez gathers his thoughts and spins with a kick. He nails Lungiambula with a spinning kick, but the South African has enough wherewithal to hit one final takedown to end this grueling fight.

Su Mudaerji (126) vs. Zarrukh Adashev (126)

Round 1

Back at flyweight, surging Chinese upstart Mudaerji (13-4, 2-1 UFC) steps in on short notice against Adashev (3-2, 0-1 UFC). Populating the cage along with these two quick men is referee Jason Herzog, and the touch of gloves is the first of many strikes to come. Mudaerji lands a powerful leg kick that makes Adashev change stances, but “The Lion” charges back with a left hand that makes Mudaerji stumble. Mudaerji gathers his thoughts and fires off a side kick that makes Adashev bounce away. Mudaerji swings and misses with another leg kick, but he lands one from his other leg. Mudaerji just barely misses a head kick, and he ducks out of the way when Adashev darts at him. The Chinese fighter chips away at the lead leg a few more times, all while evading a looping combination from his foe. Mudaerji works the lead leg as Adashev has changed stances, and he sticks Adashev with a right hand when Adashev comes in at him. Adashev swings and misses once more, with Mudaerji able to keep him at arm’s reach thanks to a significant reach advantage. Mudaerji gets off a sharp jab, and he looks for a right hook but Adashev does not come at him this time. Mudaerji peppers the lead leg with kicks, only to change it up with a kick up high to keep his foe guessing. Adashev hits nothing but air with a wide combination, allowing Mudaerji to land a stiff body kick and a leg kick from afar. Mudaerji lunges with a jab, and when he reaches out another, Adashev lands a heavy left hand. Mudaerji backs off, and Adashev is on him and connects with a right hand as well. Mudaerji looks to counter with a right hand when Adashev advances, and he stings Adashev with a right hook as Adashev has no choice but to blitz forward. Mudaerji slaps out a jab, and another breaks up a prospective combination from his opponent. The round ends.

Round 2

Mudaerji offers a glove touch, and his foe obliges him before taking a punch across the forward bow. Adashev charges in to attack, and although he misses with the majority of his strikes, one punch at the end of a shot collides with the chin. Mudaerji takes a quick count of his teeth before pushing out with a front kick. Adashev once more tries his charge, and this time Mudaerji is ready for it as he snipes him with a few jabs and a left hand. Adashev crashes the pocket to force a grappling exchange, but Mudaerji keeps his balances and pushes off to prevent any possible takedown. When Mudaerji attempts a spinning kick, Adashev circles around to take his back and slams his right hand in the side of Mudaerji’s head repeatedly. Mudaerji powers back up, and he barely misses getting clipped with a left hook. Mudaerji jumps and lands a switch kick, but Adashev brushes it off and circles away. When Mudaerji tries to land a body kick, Adashev drops him with a right hand. “The Tibetan Eagle” quickly leaps back to his feet, and his hands are down as he tries to pressure his opponent but gets tagged once more. Mudaerji lands a few punches and a front kick up the middle to get back into his groove, and he ducks away to dodge the strikes that come his way. As Adashev races forward, Mudaerji cracks him with a right hand. Adashev gets nailed with another right hand, and he turns away for a moment and falls into the fence. Mudaerji chains together a few punches as he chases him, but he lets Adashev off the hook and backs off. A possibly recovered Adashev circles the edge of the cage to gather his thoughts, and he swings and misses with a looping right hand. Mudaerji fakes a flying knee to get Adashev to retreat, and he lands a leg kick as Adashev’s volume has completely fallen away. Mudaerji chips away with a few kicks before the horn blares.

Mudaerji has a head kick blocked, and he defends himself from the looping right hand that soars towards his face. Adashev is well short of his target as Mudaerji jabs at him from a great distance, all while Mudaerji kicks at him. The feints and fakes from Mudaerji are getting Adashev to react and guess, allowing Mudaerji to tee off on him with long punches and leg kicks. The pace wanes as Mudaerji is in his groove with his hands by his waist, throwing head kicks and wildly inaccurate spinning kicks unconcerned about the response. Adashev loads up on his punches but they are not able to get any traction, with Mudaerji styling on him with single, effective strikes. Mudaerji takes a leg kick as he hops out of the way, and a body kick gets blocked but still has some impact. Adashev gets off a solid right hand, and Mudaerji stops and mocks him to claim the strike did not do anything. Adashev whiffs but is pressuring his opponent, who is now struggling to keep his range and land anything of merit. Mudaerji hops forward with a left hand, and Adashev charges like a bull with booming punches. Adashev throws bombs, and falls over with how hard he is throwing, but Mudaerji rolls with the punches and lands one final spinning wheel kick for good measure. The fight ends, and Mudaerji sticks his tongue out.

Ricky Simon (136) vs. Gaetano Pirrello (136)

Round 1

We carry on at bantamweight, when formerly mulleted Simon (16-3, 4-2 UFC) meets Octagon neophyte and Belgian striker “El Tigre” Pirrello (15-5-1, 0-0 UFC). Officiating what could be a very high-speed bout is referee Keith Peterson, who has on his nonsenseless running shoes to keep up. There is no touch of gloves, and Simon starts stalking his foe down right out of the gate. Simon takes a leg kick on his way in, but he gets off at the end of a right hand from a one-two. He thinks about a takedown, but Pirrello counters him on the way in with a right hook. Simon tags him with a right hand, but the Belgian newcomer shakes it off and takes another. Simon charges in after a punch with a takedown attempt, and hits it when he turns the corner to land in half guard. The American utilizes heavy top pressure but does not land anything of note, so Pirrello bursts up out of the position and gets pressed into the chain-link fence. Simon changes levels, elevates his opponent, spins him around and slams him down hard. Pirrello looks frustrated as he tries to walk up the fence, and although he gets to his feet, Simon partially takes his back to trip him back down. Pirrello keeps his hands pressed on the mat to disallow knees to the head, and Simon transitions into a single leg takedown before nailing his foe with an elbow. Quick as a whip, Simon drops back down for a takedown, and he secures it while Pirrello is rattled from the strike. Simon starts working punches and elbows from top position, and Pirrello eats several before kicking off to stand up. Simon has one final head kick blocked as the horn sounds.

Tudor Leonte scores the round: 10-9 Simon
John Brannigan scores the round: 10-9 Simon

Round 2

Simon’s front kick greets his foe in the beginning of the round, and he tries to spin with a back fist as Pirrello advances. The Belgian avoids it and keeps his distance, and he scores a big knee as Simon presses forward. Simon ignores it as he powers through into a takedown, where he successfully plants Pirrello down hard. Pirrello rolls through to get to his knees and up, but Simon gets a mat return. Pirrello once more powers up, but he is trapped against the fence until Simon scoops him up and puts him down. Pirrello defends himself from strikes as Simon chains takedowns together, and once again slams Pirrello down. When Pirrello rolls to his knees, Simon tries to land a left hand but it is blocked as Pirrello stands. Simon is dead set on dragging the fight down at all costs, but he knees Pirrello a single time before dropping down for a double leg takedown. Simon lands in mount, and this time Pirrello is not standing up too quickly. Simon steps over to half guard, where he locks in an arm-triangle choke. Pirrello is flat on his back without the cage as his aid, and after a few seconds of labored breathing, he has no choice to tap out lest he get put to sleep like Morozov earlier on the card.

The Official Result

Ricky Simon def. Gaetano Pirrello R2 4:00 via Submission (Arm-Triangle Choke)

Omari Akhmedov (186) vs. Tom Breese (186)

Round 1

With the classic grappler vs. striker matchup on tap next, welterweights-turned-middleweights Akhmedov (20-5-1, 8-4-1 UFC) and Breese (12-2, 5-2 UFC) lock horns to unexpectedly open up the main card. The Octagon ranger for this 185-pound affair is referee Lukasz Bosacki, and the touch of gloves precedes the action. Both men start trading heavy leather, and Akhmedov drops down for a takedown. The Brit defends it well with a guillotine choke, and it is tight. Both men are dry, so the Dagestani fighter is in danger. As Akhmedov stays patient, he inches his way out until his neck is free, where he starts to rain down strikes from above. In half guard, Akhmedov lands a few punches and elbows that have already caused some damage and swelling to form on Breese’s face. Breese manages to get Akhmedov back to his guard, and he starts hacking at elbows from his back. Akhmedov throws back with stern hammerfists, and Breese leans back with an armbar attempt but he cannot lock it up. Breese kicks off, and Akhmedov starts slamming down emphatic strikes that have Breese’s head bounce off the canvas. As Akhmedov winds up to jump back down with a power strike, Breese rolls through to avoid it and pursue his own takedown attempt. Akhmedov steps through it and a heel hook attempt that follows, where he wades back into the guard to land hammerfists. Akhmedov starts wailing on his opponent from above, and as he winds up, Breese times a moment to dive through and get to his feet. Akhmedov stands up and finds himself with a heel hook that he has to defend against. Breese attacks with submissions until Akhmedov falls over, and Breese takes Akhmedov’s back. The Brit fishes for a rear-naked choke but there is nothing doing, so he rides out the round while Akhmedov takes surprisingly deep breaths.

Sherdog Scores

Jay Pettry scores the round: 10-9 Akhmedov
Tudor Leonte scores the round: 10-9 Akhmedov
John Brannigan scores the round: 10-9 Akhmedov

Round 2

The round begins with Akhmedov looking to pick up where he left off, with a takedown attempt. He turns a double into a single, and lifts Breese in the air but falls to his back when Breese kicks off. Breese attacks with a leglock that turns into a calf slicer from his back, but he cannot find the leverage he needs to finish it. Instead, Akhmedov takes mount and quickly attacks an arm-triangle choke. Akhmedov tightens his grip and puts his full weight down to finish the job, and Bosacki checks the arm a few times but Breese’s arm appears limp. Bosacki checks it a few more times like a cat pawing at a string, and Breese’s arm again falls slowly with a thumb up in the air as if he were the Terminator, but Bosacki does not stop the fight. The commentary is going ballistic, screaming that Breese is unconscious, but that may not be the case. The Brit could be playing possum or he might have been choked out momentarily, because he jolts to life and then taps out. What a win for Akhmedov, forcing a BJJ black belt to surrender in such a fashion.

The Official Result

Omari Akhmedov def. Tom Breese R2 1:41 via Submission (Arm-Triangle Choke)

Lerone Murphy (146) vs. Douglas Silva de Andrade (145)

Round 1

Continuing on the main card will be a featherweight clash between unbeaten Brit Murphy (9-0-1, 1-0-1 UFC) and Brazil’s Silva de Andrade (26-3, 1 NC; 4-3 UFC) with the potential for some bonus money at its conclusion. Referee Marc Goddard takes charge of the cage in the outset, and the two introduce themselves to one another with a touch of gloves. Murphy keeps a wide stance as he reaches out to strike with a right hand, so the Brazilian chops at his outstretched leg. Murphy comes with a right hand over the top, and a kick glances off the cup but does not get noticed. Silva de Andrade charges forward with a combination of punches, and he is short of the mark. Murphy takes a leg kick and punches to the head and body, forcing Silva de Andrade to back away. Silva de Andrade flails with a few punches that are nowhere near connecting, allowing Murphy to nail him with a left hand and a calf kick that spins Silva de Andrade around. Murphy absorbs a body kick and reaches out with a left hook, but it only grazes the intended area. Murphy steps in with a jab only to have his lead leg kicked hard again. Murphy whiffs on a punch that blows his foe’s hair back, and the two exchange kicks at the same time to the body. Murphy lands hard to the body, and he checks a leg kick and scores a big right hand up top. Murphy gets off a pair of big right hands that snap the head back, but the Brazilian appears unconcerned as he keeps fighting. Murphy narrowly misses a head kick, and his one-two that follows after it rings off the forward bow. Murphy’s range advantage allows him to kick the body and jab without getting touched up, forcing Silva de Andrade to explode forward to attack. The Brazilian does so, charging with reckless abandon as a flurry of strikes largely get blocked. Murphy circles out, kicks low a few times, and defends against a low single leg takedown. Silva de Andrade wings an elbow but has his lead leg kicked hard, and Murphy is able to land a one-two right before the horn.

Round 2

Silva de Andrade begins the round with a fierce leg kick and a left hand, and Murphy cannot respond with anything of note. Instead, Murphy throws a head kick that gets grabbed, and the Brazilian tosses him down to the ground. The ensuing scramble sees Silva de Andrade snatch up the back and hunt for a rear-naked choke. Murphy rolls through the position, breaking the posture and managing to get back to his feet. As he thanks his foe for the takedown, Murphy blasts the lead calf and makes Silva de Andrade stumble backwards. The Brazilian regains his composure to charge into a clinch, allowing Murphy to knee and elbow him with impunity. Silva de Andrade hits a trip when Murphy considers his own takedown, and Silva de Andrade takes mount with ease until Murphy turns his back. The unbeaten fighter surrenders the position as he gets to his knees, where he manages to power up and spin about to relieve himself from danger. Murphy delivers a single knee up the middle to force a separation, and he chops down on Silva de Andrade’s lead leg. Silva de Andrade uses that damaged leg with a head kick, but his leg is compromised. The Brazilian still is able to step in and dig in a left hand square on the liver, which draws a reaction out of his opponent. Murphy powers through it and fights off a clinch attempt. Murphy lands a right hand, and he avoids an elbow on the way in. Murphy lands a kick to the cup that is again unseen, and he spins with a back kick that glances off the guard. Silva de Andrade fires off kicks high and low, but Murphy catches one and counters with a hard right hand. The Brazilian pulls his leg free and they start trading, but his lead leg gets kicked another time to force Silva de Andrade to fall forward. Murphy’s kick makes Silva de Andrade change stances, and when the horn sounds, Silva de Andrade limps back to his corner.

Round 3

The two featherweights greet with a double glove touch, and Murphy backs off and lets fly a head kick. Murphy fakes an overhand right, and his fakes are drawing clear reactions out of his opponent. Silva de Andrade spins with a kick, and when he misses, Murphy hacks at the calf once more. Silva de Andrade swings and misses with looping punches, and the much quicker Murphy is able to tag him with sharp counter shots. Murphy steps in to absorb a punch so that he can land three, leading to a Silva de Andrade blitz that is blocked. Silva de Andrade cracks him with a right hand, and a spinning back kick comes immediately after, and Murphy is rocked. The Brit clinches up, gets off a few body shots, and separates as Silva de Andrade wades forward. Silva de Andrade’s kick clacks into the cup, and this time, Goddard sees the foul and pauses the action. Less than a minute is all Murphy needs to recover, and Silva de Andrade attacks recklessly. Murphy taunts him, and he ducks down when Silva de Andrade swings wildly. Murphy lands a knee up the middle, but Silva de Andrade slams his fist into Murphy’s chin. Both men score big shots, and Silva de Andrade ends a salvo with a leg kick that is caught. Murphy lands a one-two, and ducks the counter that zooms over his head. A left to the body from Murphy is followed by a big right hand, and Silva de Andrade reels from the damage but does not wobble. Instead, he marches forward with a head kick that is shy of the mark, and he tries to clinch and throw a wild elbow. His strikes are accompanied by guttural barks, leading Murphy to grab hold of him and hunt for a single leg takedown to slow this down. Murphy hits a takedown and manages to stop the sweep that comes, where he takes half guard and lands some short ground-and-pound. Murphy allows Silva de Andrade to return him to guard so that he can keep the position, and he drops down punches and hacking elbows until the final klaxon blares to conclude this high-intensity matchup.

Tyson Nam (126) vs. Matt Schnell (126)

Round 1

The final men’s flyweight tilt on the card comes with top-10 implications when “Danger” Schnell (14-5, 4-3 UFC) puts his higher position in danger against heavy-handed Hawaiian Nam (20-11-1, 2-2 UFC). Holding on tight will be referee Herb Dean, who will try not to get caught up in a flurry of feet and fists. There is no glove touch, as it’s time to strike. Nam aims his right hand, and Schnell kicks the body and topples over. Nam does not have any interest in playing the ground game, so he allows Schnell to stand up and land a trio of punches. Schnell strings together a few punches while Nam just stares at him, slapping away punches without concern and stomping the floor to draw a reaction. Schnell gets in a solid right hand when he absorbs a leg kick, and he lets loose another right hook as Nam kicks at him once more. Schnell bites down on his mouthpiece to sling a right hand, and he pops Nam a few times with strikes. Nam’s right hand is ready and rearing to throw, but Schnell is quick on the action and lands a few shots and escapes. Nam reaches out with a right hand and throws a leg kick, and when Schnell replies to him with punches, Nam smiles. Schnell takes a quick combination on the chin, and he slams his shin on Nam’s knee. The Hawaiian stalks his man down and sneaks up a left uppercut, but Schnell pays it no mind as he gets off a front kick up the middle. Schnell keeps away with a few jabs, and one jab is able to disrupt the big right hand from the headhunting Nam. Nam lands a pair of punches to the body, and Schnell backs off and flicks out a few more jabs. Schnell sticks and moves while Nam sits down on his right hand, and he is out of the way when Nam slings it. Schnell sees the right hand coming as he slips it, keeping punches going and tagging Nam. Nam absorbs the blows and throws back, but he appears surprised at the latest dangerous barrage from “Danger.” Nam races forward only to eat a few short punches, and Schnell’s combinations are doing work and damage on Nam’s face. A cut has opened around Nam’s eye, and he paws at it when the round ends.

Round 2

Schnell picks up where he left off with fast hands as he peppers Nam with strikes. Nam sits on a few punches, and Schnell backpedals while Nam rushes towards him. Schnell puts a three-piece on Nam before the Hawaiian can react, and he slips a few long punches from Nam. Schnell lands a jab, but Nam cracks him with a pair of big hooks that land flush. Schnell appears cautious as he has tasted Nam’s power, and a right hand dislodges Schnell’s mouthpiece. Nam is bearing down on his opponent, hunting his foe and slamming his right hand into Schnell’s cheek. Schnell wears it well but his pace and volume has diminished as he took some of those heavy shots, so Nam keeps it rolling by putting two punches together. Nam flicks out a jab a few times, and a leg kick of his disrupts the return fire from Schnell. The Hawaiian grins as he walks down his foe, but Schnell has started to get his jabs working again. Nam wings a couple of huge punches, and Schnell beats him to the punch but still eats a left hook. Five crisp punches land from Schnell, and Nam grins and throws back his own combination that is largely blocked. A naked body kick from Schnell allows Nam to land with a right hand over the top, but he absorbs it and takes a step back. Twin jabs from Schnell temporarily pause Nam’s rush forward, but the Hawaiian is quick to stalk his man down again and land blows. Three punches of Schnell lead to four from Nam, who is finding his mark more often this round. He swings a big right hand that narrowly misses the target, but one that comes after does not miss. The two flyweights trade to end the round.

Round 3

Nam comes out aggressively, walking down his foe and throw leather. Schnell stays on the outside with crisp, straighter shots, and he ducks when Nam fires a big right hand that pulls him off-balance. Schnell puts three punches on Nam’s mug while Nam is coming at him, but Nam lands with his own shots in response. As Nam presses the action, Schnell gets off a check knee, and the Hawaiian is unconcerned as he clicks a left hand off the jaw. Nam blocks a one-two and absorbs a kick, leading Schnell to kick low as he backs away. A big right hand from Nam slides off the shoulder, and Schnell has his guard up when Nam comes at him with a fire and fury. Both men jab the other repeatedly, and Nam is beaming as he walks Schnell down but takes some shots. Schnell lands four before Nam can reach him, but Nam’s chin is study as he walks through them and gets off his own punch combo. An energized Nam walks Schnell down and lands heavy punches, all while Schnell greets him on the way in. Two big hooks shake up Schnell for a moment, but “Danger” gathers himself and jabs several times to back Nam off. Nam throws a two-punch combination so hard he almost falls over, and Schnell avoids the damage and gets off a few jabs here and there. Nam clubs him with a left hand, and he pushes in before clocking Schnell with a left hook. They trade it out to the bell, and this exciting kickboxing match is over. The scorecards could be very interesting in this 125-pound affair.

Roxanne Modafferi (126) vs. Viviane Araujo (126)

Round 1

The last women’s bout of the day comes also at flyweight, when two top-10 opponents square off as fan-favorite Modafferi (25-17, 4-5 UFC) faces the powerful “Vivi” Araujo (9-2, 3-1 UFC). Keeping tabs on this bout will be referee Keith Peterson, and there is nothing – especially no nonsense – but respect between these women as they touch gloves. Modafferi keeps to the outside with jabs, and lands a right hand when the Brazilian comes in. Araujo lands a stiff jab, and a right hand circles around Modafferi’s guard. “Vivi” lands another right hand, and Modafferi’s face is already getting marked up quick as Araujo connects several fierce right hands. Modafferi wobbles from a left hand, and the jab does some damage but Modafferi is unconcerned as she walks forward. Araujo lands a heavy right hand, and she leans back as several Modafferi jabs fly pas her. Araujo cracks Modafferi with an uppercut, but Modafferi keeps coming forward with reaching left hands. Araujo gets off another few punches, and her jabs are powerful and snap Modafferi’s head back each time. Modafferi paws out with jabs but takes another hard left hand. Araujo gets off a trio of punches, and Modafferi is force to close the distance. Araujo catches Modafferi coming in with a right hand, dropping Modafferi down to her knee. “The Happy Warrior” pops back up, but she is getting worked from a distance with jabs and power punches. The Brazilian splits the guard with a left hand, and Modafferi can do nothing but take it flush. Modafferi reaches out with a front kick, and a left hand that follows is easily dodged to allow Araujo to counter her. Modafferi walks in with punches, and Araujo slips but does not lose her balance. Araujo stings her with a right hook, and a left hook stands up Modafferi shortly after. Modafferi jabs her way into a clinch, where she pursues a takedown and hunts for an inside trip. The Brazilian fights it off and takes a knee, but she manages to power Modafferi down and score some heavy ground-and-pound. Araujo circles around to take Modafferi’s back, and she fishes for a rear-naked choke. The Brazilian cannot finish it in time before the horn sounds.

Round 2

Modafferi rushes out of her corner to offer a glove touch, and signaling that she is not out of this fight. Araujo is fine with that, as she plants a big right hand on Modafferi’s quickly swelling face. Araujo scores a thudding trio of strikes that catch Modafferi flatfooted, and she reaches her jab out before Modafferi can touch her. Araujo ducks an overhand right and lands a left of her own, before she backs away with a few right hands. “Vivi” scores a crisp jab and a few more punches, and she rolls through a big overhand right. Modafferi dives down after its success to attack a low single, but Araujo defends it, turns Modafferi around and nearly takes her back. Modafferi fights her way out and adjusts her knee braces, and swings and misses with a one-two. All the while, Araujo scores fast punches. Modafferi lands leg kicks from both leg and takes a punch across the bow, but she dings Araujo with a jab to disrupt a power punch. Modafferi’s jab is starting to get through, but Araujo fires back heavier and may have caused Modafferi’s ear to start bleeding. Modafferi scores a big right hand, and she charges through to take the fight down but Araujo brushes her aside like a matador. Again, Modafferi adjusts her knee braces, and Araujo watches her do this before landing punches. The two flyweights land simultaneous jabs a few times, and Modafferi presses the pace but gets clipped with a left hand coming in. Araujo’s piston-like left hand scores several times until she decides she has had enough striking, and she ducks down and scoops up Modafferi to slam her down. As soon as Modafferi hits the ground, her eye starts bleeding from a strike Araujo had landed. Araujo steps over into half guard, landing shots until the horn blares.

Round 3

The glove touch is the kindest strike thrown in the early going, as Araujo loads up on a few punches that get Modafferi’s attention early. Modafferi returns with punches of her own, but Araujo’s are substantially more impactful as they knock Modafferi across the cage. Modafferi throws so hard she almost tumbles to the ground, but she gains her balance and reaches forward with jab after jab. Araujo is quicker, sharper and stronger, landing shots while Modafferi tries to crash forward. Modafferi changes levels to take the fight down, and Araujo bounces back to her feet. Modafferi lands a mat return, but Araujo scrambles, gives up her back and turns back out. As she fights Modafferi to the clinch, Araujo takes the fight down herself, where she lands in side control to pursue strikes. Modafferi gets to her knees and powers up, and her swollen face keeps taking punishment and her right eye is closing fast. Araujo targets strikes at that damaged area, but Araujo takes a deep breath and Modafferi senses a moment to strike. “The Happy Warrior” charges forward to attack with a stream of punching, landing flush on the Brazilian and forcing Araujo to rebound off the fence. Modafferi chases after he landing shots, and Araujo may be fatigued as she retreats. Araujo keeps an energized Modafferi at bay with a few jabs, but Modafferi loads up on a right hand that lands square on the chin. Modafferi jumps in the air with a knee, and Araujo catches her and presses her foe into the clinch. Modafferi fights her way out of the clinch, and she lands a one-two that makes Araujo shoot in low for a double. The Brazilian hits it, and Modafferi falls to her back with a closed guard. Modafferi throws her legs up for some sort of submission attempt, searching for an armbar or a triangle while Araujo is forced to fight them off. Araujo passes guard to side control as she gets works through the danger, and she lands a few strikes from above right before the round ends. Isaac Villanueva (206) vs. Vinicius Moreira Castro (206)

Round 1

The heaviest fight on the card comes not at heavyweight but light heavyweight, when two men in dire need of a win come to blows as “Hurricane Ike” Villanueva (17-11, 0-2 UFC) clashed with “Mamute” Moreira (9-4, 0-3 UFC). The glove touch comes before referee Jason Herzog, who checks the relatively big men in to fight. Moreira circles away to land a leg kick, as Villanueva crashes in to strike. The Brazilian covers up to defend against the strikes, and he scores another leg kick. “Hurricane Ike” crashes in to land some punches, but they are blocked and returned with a head kick. Villanueva rushes in for a few more punches, and they all clatter off the guard. Moreira accidentally kicks the cup, and when there is no pause, he kicks the outside of Villanueva’s leg. Villanueva wades in to throw punches in bunches, and Moreira pushes him away with a front kick. Moreira reaches out with a few more front kicks, as Villanueva is bearing down on him trying to throw a series of punches each time. “Mamute” wings an overhand right, and Villanueva absorbs it and walks down his man to land his own heavy right hand. Moreira stands back and kicks the lead leg again a few times, before planting his foot on Villanueva’s torso more than once. Villanueva leans forward to land a body shot, and he tries to get off a left hook but he is well shy of the mark. Villanueva drills his man at the end of a right hand amidst a sea of arm punches, and Moreira gathers himself and hits a superman punch. “Mamute” steps in with a body kick, and Villanueva tries to close in to strike but he gets pushed away. Villanueva greets him with an uppercut that splits the guard, but it is one-and-done as Moreira pushes him away. The two bigger men land punches at the same time, and when Villanueva goes wild, Moreira knees him in the face. Villanueva blocks a body kick, and he catches another to blast Moreira with a right hand to send the Brazilian falling backward. “Mamute” bounces back with a superman punch, and the round ends.

Villanueva blitzes with punches that collide with the guard, and he backs off to reset. The Brazilian rushes in to attack with a huge right hand, and Villanueva ducks. Before Moreira can land, Villanueva winds up with a bomb of a right hand, and he detonates it on Moreira’s chin. The Brazilian crumples to the ground in a heap, out before he hits the canvas. With that knockout, Villanueva earns his first win inside the Octagon, and he does it in a devastating manner. That is now an even 15 knockouts across 18 wins for the Houston native, and none bigger than this one.

Mounir Lazzez (171) vs. Warlley Alves (171)

Round 1

Our co-main event, unlike prior bouts on the card, sees two unranked fighters go at it. Welterweights Alves (13-4, 7-4 UFC) and Lazzez (10-1, 1-0 UFC) look to display their power and advance in the division, and referee Herb Dean will make sure everything is above board as they opt to touch gloves. Alves walks forward, lands a big right hand, and clinches up with the Tunisian fighter. Lazzez reverses the position and gets elbows in the face a few times, and Alves spins with a back fist as he breaks. Lazzez re-initiates the clinch, and the Brazilian hits a trip takedown to put Lazzez on his back. Alves looks to climb over into a better position as he pounds down with his left hand, and Lazzez powers back to his feet without taking much damage. Lazzez frames off and nails Alves with a spinning back elbow, before pressing Alves heavily into the chain-link fence. Lazzez pushes off, and Alves drills him with three ferocious body kicks. The third pounds square in the liver, and Lazzez falls to the ground in pain as Alves bowls him over. With “Sniper” laying on his side turtled up, Alves lords above him and slams his fist into Lazzez’ head five times until Dean has seen enough. The Alves of old is back, and he ran through Lazzez to become the first man to finish the Tunisian.

With hopes of pushing into a crowded top crop of 170-pounders, Chiesa (17-4, 10-4 UFC) has nothing to worry about when it comes to trash talk (especially about family) as he takes on “Haitian Sensation” Magny (24-7, 17-6 UFC). The final fight of this long day of face-punching concludes as referee Marc Goddard takes charge of the cage, and the two men are excitedly fired up as they touch gloves before inflicting bodily harm on one another. Magny reaches out his long left hand several times early while Chiesa finds his range, and the two clinch up as Chiesa engages this position. Magny pushes him away with a few knees, and Chiesa slaps away jabs while scoring a solid front kick in the breadbasket. Chiesa scores a leg kick and pushes away a pawing right hand from Magny, and the two reach their outstretched hands towards the other. Chiesa lands a one-two and a front kick, and Magny swats at his strikes before scoring a quick right hook. When Chiesa presses towards him, Magny catches him with a right hand. Magny steps in with a foot sweep, and Chiesa plants his left hand on Magny’s surprised jaw. Chiesa charges in to score a big left hand, and he reaches out a few jabs to close in. Magny crashes through to land a couple punches, and a clinch leads to a smooth takedown for “Maverick.” Chiesa hits the ground in half guard, and Magny locks him down while Chiesa tries to pass guard. Chiesa grabs two-on-one wrist control for a kimura, and as soon as he does this, Magny threatens with a sweep to make Chiesa bail on it. Chiesa lands a couple short hammerfists while looking to break through Magny’s guard, and “The Haitian Sensation” holds him tight and protects himself from most damage. Chiesa maintains heavy shoulder pressure to keep Magny’s head squeezed flat on the cage, and he flirts with an arm-triangle choke and passes to mount as the round ends.

Round 2

The welterweights touch gloves to start off the round, and both attempt a series of double and triple jabs to measure their range again. Magny kicks off, and Chiesa kicks as well to close in and clinch. Chiesa attempts a body lock takedown, but Magny staves it off and keeps himself upright before pursuing his own takedown. Chiesa reverses the position and lands some short clinch strikes, and when Chiesa attacks a single, Magny slaps him in the ear. Chiesa drags Magny down to the ground, and Magny rolls through and is nearly swept. Chiesa makes the appropriate correction to keep Magny down, but Magny uses the momentum to stand back up against the fence. Magny lifts Chiesa up, but in the process, he falls to his back. Chiesa sits up in full guard, slashing down with elbows and hurting Magny briefly. An excited Chiesa nearly allows Magny to sneak out the back door, but he repositions and gets back to half guard while he grinds his shoulder down on Magny’s chin. Chiesa sits up high and aims for an unorthodox choke all while trying to pass to mount, so Magny defends himself well enough to keep out of submission danger. Chiesa racks up control time and lands some short strikes before setting up an arm-triangle choke, and he abandons it when he cannot pass to side control. Chiesa postures up to land a few punches, and Magny keeps an iron grip on Chiesa’s left hand to keep him trapped there. Chiesa springs over the top and lands a thudding elbow from on high, and Magny is stuck with an elbow pressed hard in his throat while seconds rip off the clock. The round ends in this position.

Round 3

There is another glove touch to start off the round, and Magny walks down his man to begin the frame but does not throw any strikes. Chiesa is the first to engage, who sticks out a front kick to the chest at the 30-second mark. The clinch leads to Magny attempting a body lock takedown, and Chiesa stays upright but eats a few shots in close range. Magny ties up Chiesa’s left leg to secure a takedown, and he hits it while Chiesa scrambles wildly. Magny takes Chiesa’s back as Chiesa gets to his knee, and Magny starts punching him in the side of the head. “Maverick” makes his way back to his feet, and he tries to trip Magny down but Magny is wise to it. Chiesa pushes off and avoids a right hand, but Magny pushes the pace and lands a few strikes. Chiesa comes back at him with a left hand, and he punches his way into a takedown attempt. Magny stands him up, and the two jockey for position against the fence until Magny circles around to get on Chiesa’s back. Chiesa gets out of this bad position and goes after a trip, and now Chiesa is behind Magny. Chiesa drops down to wrench his foe down, and he lifts Magny in the air to put him down. Both men are stuck in a strange position while Magny goes after a leg lock, but this puts him in a bad position as Chiesa climbs over to mount. Chiesa keeps a mounted triangle as Magny turns, but “The Haitian Sensation” finds himself in a guillotine choke. Magny pulls his neck out and is flat on his back, with a familiar half guard position like the previous rounds. Chiesa sits up to slice down with a single elbow, and Magny pops him with a few hammerfists. This close round comes to a close.

Round 4

The fourth round begins with a glove touch like all the rest, and Magny’s hands are down as he slaps out a jab. Chiesa steps in with a front kick, and circles on the outside while Magny approaches him. Magny does not commit to any strikes early, and Chiesa shrugs and punches his way into close distance. Chiesa surprises him with a left hand, and this strike allows him to take the fight down with a body lock. Chiesa in full guard begins to slash with elbows from above, and Magny can do nothing but absorb them flush. Chiesa hunts for a straight armlock but there is nothing to it, so he goes back to getting off some ground-and-pound. Magny bucks and twists to protect himself, but in the process, Chiesa crawls over to half guard. “Maverick” pursues a kimura, and Magny crawls to a knee but gives up his back. Chiesa has him trapped, as he gets a body triangle and goes after a choke immediately. Magny walks over the cage, but Chiesa is aware of the scramble and takes mount. Magny swirls and keeps rolling, so Chiesa hops on to his back again and serves as a backpack for a few seconds. He abandons this and lands a spinning back elbow before backing away, and Magny charges after him with a flying knee. Chiesa ties him up again against the fence, and digs deep for a single but falls into an inverted triangle choke from Magny. Chiesa is not concerned as he keeps turning, but the choke is much tighter when the two continue their exchange. Magny lands a few elbows to the side, and Chiesa yanks his neck out. To take top position again, Chiesa rocks back and forth, where he concludes this round on top.

Round 5

The gloves are touched one final time, and Magny is a man possessed as he strides forward with his hands down ready to trade. He whiffs on a spinning back kick, and Chiesa keeps a safe distance and avoids a few jabs coming his way. Chiesa stings Magny with a few punches, but Magny eats them and stalks Chiesa down. “Maverick” swings a left hook as Magny has to take a step back, and Magny evaluates his position and throws hard. Chiesa sees this coming and ducks down to latch on to his foe, where he takes Magny’s back standing up. As Magny keeps his balance against the fence with his face grinding into the fence, Chiesa tries to suck his legs out but cannot do it. Magny lifts him up and falls to his back, where Chiesa easily spins around to wind up on top. Chiesa is in an odd position on top, sitting on Magny’s head like a big brother before turning to nearly secure side control. Chiesa holds Magny tightly trapped on the ground, keeping his full body weight pressed down to hold Magny in this spot. Magny pushes off the fence but Chiesa is in his favored half guard position, where his shoulder is squeezing on Magny’s jaw. Chiesa has the makings of an arm-triangle choke, but he would prefer position over submission at this point with a minute remaining in the bout. Chiesa slides to mount, and Chiesa allows himself to get back to half guard so that Magny cannot buck him off. Chiesa’s activity and transitions allow him to stay on top without so much as a word from Goddard, landing a few strikes from above. Magny turns through to get an ankle, but Chiesa pushes him over and takes mount with seconds left. Chiesa lands one final punctuating elbow, and his mounted top control concludes this one-sided bout. The crowd, which had remained silent for much of the night, boos this performance. On the microphone, the victorious Chiesa has a very simple message for his next opponent, calling out Colby Covington and shouting that "the election is over!"
