Even though he barely got touched in the UFC on Fox 21 headliner Saturday night, Demian Maia came away from his showdown with Carlos Condit $50,000 richer.
Maia received a “Performance of the Night” bonus for his surprisingly quick first-round submission of Condit at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver. The grappling ace took Condit down early, moved to his opponent’s back and secured a rear-naked choke victory 1:52 into the opening period for his sixth straight welterweight triumph.
Elsewhere, Paige VanZant apparently did more than dance during her time away from the Octagon. The Team Alpha Male product — and “Dancing with the Stars” runner-up — earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for her second-round knockout of Bec Rawlings at strawweight. A spectacular jumping switch kick sent Rawlings tumbling to the canvas, and VanZant clinched victory with a few follow-up ground punches 17 seconds into the period.
Finally, Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon provided an entertaining second chapter to their rivalry, garnering “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece in the process. Miller got the better of exchanges on the feet, but Lauzon kept coming forward in typical fashion and took his foe down in each round. Ultimately, it was Miller who escaped with a hard-earned split verdict in a result that could have gone either way.
