Unbeaten Spang Meets Ray in Sept. 23 Strikeforce Debut

On the heels of Strikeforce’s announcement that Strikeforce Challengers 19 competitor Jerron Peoples had withdrawn from the Sept. 23 event due to injury, the promotion has revealed that unbeaten prospect Christopher Spang will fill the void against Joe Ray.

Headlined by a light heavyweight scrap between Lorenz Larkin and Nick Rossborough, Strikeforce Challengers 19 will emanate from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The event will also feature the return of lightweight Ryan Couture, as he locks horns with Maka Watson. Additionally, Lavar Johnson and Jason High will each compete at the show, taking on Shawn Jordan and Todd Moore, respectively. The main card airs on Showtime at 11 p.m. ET, delayed on the west coast.

Spang (Pictured, File Photo) has only three professional fights to his credit. Known as “The Kiss,” Spang began his career in 2008, knocking out Ugo Gaillard in the first round. His next two finishes would come even quicker, as the J-Sect MMA representative knocked out Cesar Narita in just 16 seconds in 2009 before submitting Adam Hazelton in 38 seconds on June 25.

Representing American Top Team, Ray has lost two of his last three after beginning his career a perfect 4-0. The 26-year-old most recently dropped a unanimous decision to Nah-Shon Burrell at Strikeforce “Overeem vs. Werdum” on June 18, as Burrell outwrestled the Floridian en route to the judges’ nod. Both of Ray’s career losses have been decisions, and he has finished all five of his beaten foes by either knockout or submission.
