Combate Americas on Friday returned to the stage with an action-packed card from The Auditorio Del Estado in Mexicali, Mexico. Combate Americas “Garcia vs. Gonzalez” provided MMA fans with yet another night of great scraps that included the crowning of a new lightweight champion.

In the main event, Rafa Garcia and Erick Gonzalez went head-to-head for the vacant Combate Americas lightweight title. In the first round, Garcia used his wrestling to get the fight to the ground several times, but Gonzalez managed to scramble back to his feet after avoiding a few submission attempts. Gonzalez battered Garcia on the feet to end the round, nearly finishing him. The second round was a much different story for Garcia, who came out aggressive on the feet and stunned Gonzalez several times. After being taken down, Gonzalez got right back to his feet, only to take more striking punishment from Garcia. Gonzalez took some hellacious shots and survived the round on extremely wobbly legs, showing a ton of heart in the process. Garcia came out in the third round and controlled the action with his wrestling. Despite excellent defense from Gonzalez, he just could not keep Garcia off of him. In the end, Garcia was declared the new Combate Americas lightweight champion via unanimous decision: 29-28, 29-28, 29-28.

Meanwhile, Yasmine Jauregui put on a dominant showing against Yajaira Romo at strawweight. Jauregui controlled the fight in all aspects, earning herself a unanimous decision on the scorecards. All three judges scored it 30-26.

In a featherweight clash, Cristian Perez picked up a hard-fought victory over Jair Perez via unanimous decision, earning 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 marks on the scorecards. Both men had their moments over the course of the three rounds.

Laura Huizar defeated Karla Almaguer via technical knockout 4:40 into the second round of their atomweight affair. Both women came out to fight, swinging heavy leather to start off the bout, but it was Huizar who landed the more vicious shots, bloodying Almager’s face and putting her away against the cage.

It took Gilberto Santos less than a full round to defeat Carlos Ochoa, as he locked in an armbar for the submission 4:29 into the first round of their featherweight clash.

Aspiring flyweights went the distance, as Gabriel Valdez Mendoza took a unanimous decision from Santiago Monreal. Scores were 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27.

Finally, Alberto Trujillo dominated Edgar Chairez across all three rounds of their flyweight tilt, cruising to a unanimous decision. All three judges scored it 30-27.
