Video: T.J. Dillashaw, Stephen Thompson Brawl in Van Heusen ‘Flex Collection’ Commercial

Van Heusen is putting Ultimate Fighting Championship athletes in suits, and it seems to be a good fit.

According to Adweek, Van Heusen is the first men’s dress clothing provider to have a sponsorship with the Las Vegas-based promotion. The partnership will become official during UFC 227 on Saturday.

In a recently released commercial, bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw and former welterweight title challenger Stephen Thompson are office mates who engage in a brawl when Dillashaw becomes annoyed by the sound of “Wonderboy” noisily slurping his drink through a straw.

The spot is intended to showcase the flexibility of the “Flex Collection” apparel as Dillashaw and Thompson throw punches and kicks at each other in a cubicle-turned-cage environment. The clothing line has been on the market for about four years.

“I want people to believe that the product works, because it does. If it can stretch this much on them in these conditions, it is obviously something that would be relevant to them,” Mike Kelly, CMO of Van Heusen parent company PVH Heritage Marketing told Ad Week.

The timing of the ad worked out perfectly, as Dillashaw is scheduled to defend his bantamweight crown in a rematch against Cody Garbrandt in the UFC 227 headliner at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Van Heusen will have its logo on the Octagon canvas on Saturday.

“We didn’t plan it this way but T.J. will be in a title fight for a pay per view event. As part of the sponsorship with UFC, we wanted to be in the space, we wanted to be endemic and inside the space,” Kelly said.
