Wanderlei Silva Could Need Shoulder Surgery After Bicycle Accident
Bellator MMA signee Wanderlei
Silva was recently injured when he was hit by a car while
riding his bicycle home from a workout.
According to a post on the UFC and Pride Fighting Championships veteran’s Facebook page, Silva was expected to undergo surgery on his shoulder on Thursday. However, Silva’s wife told MMAjunkie.com that “The Axe Murderer” still needs to meet with his doctor and undergo some tests before a decision is made.
It was recently announced that the 39-year-old Brazilian would compete in Rizin Fighting Federation’s next open weight grand prix tournament, which will occur over the course of two different events, one in September and one on New Year’s Eve. It is unclear if the shoulder injury will affect Silva’s participation.
Silva signed a multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA earlier this year, but he is not expected to compete for the California-based promotion until May 2017 after his three-year suspension for fleeing a drug test is complete. He has not competed in MMA since March 2013, when he knocked out Brian Stann in the second round at UFC on Fuel TV 8.
