Yoel Romero Claps Back at Daniel Cormier for Turning Him Down

Yoel Romero is moving back up to the light heavyweight division after years of success at middleweight. But with two losses to current champion Robert Whittaker and a failed effort to make weight in an interim middleweight title shot against Luke Rockhold, “The Soldier of God” is looking to reinvent himself.

Ever since news of Romero’s move to 205 pounds broke, the Cuban Olympic medalist has been angling for an immediate title shot against light heavyweight champion and newly-crowned heavyweight titlist Daniel Cormier.

For his part, DC has been vocal about defending the light heavyweight strap one more time before cashing out in a massive payday fight against WWE superstar Brock Lesnar. However, Cormier has specifically mentioned Mauricio Rua as his next and last light heavyweight title defense, which leaves Romero in the lurch.

Cormier (21-1 1 NC) squashed any ideas of fighting Romero on “UFC Tonight,” emphasizing his still recent losses at middleweight:

“Here’s the deal… I never wrestled Yoel Romero, but in wrestling, he probably would have served me up,” said Cormier. “He’s one of the great wrestlers of all-time. But, you don’t fail a class and then get moved up a grade to the next one.

Chael Sonnen did that one time, but I don’t know what was going on. Chael has a way of doing that. Let’s just say that.”

Romero (13-3) took to Twitter upon hearing DC’s dismissal of his call-out, and had a timely response for the two-time world champion:

Cormier’s only two career losses were to Jon Jones, once by decision at UFC 182 and another at UFC 217, a knockout loss which was ultimately overturned to a no contest following a failed USADA test by Jones. DC did retain the title against Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220, but Romero managed to make his point regardless.

Cormier just recently fought against former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 226, taking his belt with first round punches on Saturday night.
