Yorgan De Castro Hopes People Keep On Overlooking Him After Impressive UFC Debut

Yorgan De Castro remained undefeated, as he knocked out Justin Tafa in his Octagon debut at UFC 243.

The heavyweight has grown accustomed to being the underdog of late, as he wasn’t favored in his contract-winning appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series or against Tafa in Melbourne. Just as he did on the Contender Series, De Castro defied the odds and came out on top with a walk-off knockout.

De Castro hopes fighters and fans continue to overlook him and underestimate him going forward.

“I hope people keep on overlooking me so by that time I can get to the top,” De Castro said to Sherdog.com. “By the time they start to take me seriously, I’ll be too good.”

For De Castro, make a UFC debut in front of 57,000 fans and on the main card of a pay-per-view is unique. Yet, he says the nerves surprisingly weren’t there.

“That was the thing, I was feeling very good. I took my nap at the venue, did my warmup. I got in the tunnel and said this was my time and I’m going to enjoy this,” he explained. I enjoyed every single moment of the fight.”

After what he calls “the perfect debut,” De Castro is looking to continue to ride the momentum and is hoping he can fight again in 2019 — even if that means stepping in on short notice.

“I was thinking in December, but the cards are full. I’m going to enjoy a week off with my daughter but if they call me on short notice I’m taking it.”
