Last week, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Yair Rodriguez had withdrawn from a proposed featherweight clash with Magomedsharipov due to injury. At the time, the promotion was in the process of seeking a new foe for the 29-year-old Dagestani.
However, Magomedsharipov announced in a recent Instagram post that he has ended his camp and will return to Russia. The 29-year-old Ricardo Almeida Jiu-Jitsu representative said that he “asked for either a belt fight or a fight with some interesting opponent with a name” and indicated that there were no offers that met those requirements.
Magomedsharipov vs. Rodriguez was slated to be the headliner for the event, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It is unclear if the organization will find a new main event or bump one of the previously scheduled fights, such as Anthony Smith vs. Aleksandar Rakic or Robbie Lawler vs. Neil Magny, to top billing.
Magomedsharipov has kicked off his UFC tenure with six consecutive triumphs. Most recently, he outpointed Calvin Kattar in a three-round headliner at UFC Fight Night 163 on Nov. 9.
