Bas Rutten Seminar Update
Aug 25, 2006
O.C. Dojo and Valor Fighting are proud to present The Ultimate
Mixed Martial Arts Seminar with legendary fighter Bas Rutten (Pictures) on Saturday September 2 at
1pm.
O.C. Dojo, San Clemente’s premiere gym and MMA training center will host this historic event; which marks Rutten’s only Orange County Seminar this year. The Ultimate Mixed Martial Arts Seminar offers those in attendance an extremely rare opportunity to train with and learn from the man who many consider to be the world’s greatest martial artist in an intimate setting. The seminar will consist of over 4 hours of instruction in which Bas will cover all aspects of MMA; including techniques essential to effective striking, takedowns, ground control, submissions, and overall fighting strategy. Before getting into the details of the seminar, let’s take a closer look at its instructor, the incomparable Bas Rutten (Pictures).
Rutten is one of the most decorated fighters in history. Born in
Tilburg, Netherlands, Bas first began training as a fighter at the
age of 14. By the time he was 20, “El Guapo” (The Handsome) as Bas calls
himself, was competing in Thai boxing in the Netherlands in which
he built an impressive 14-1 record with all 14 wins coming by way
of knockout. Rutten added to his devastating striking ability by
becoming an expert in submission fighting as well.
The Dutchman put his newly acquired skills to the test, and traveled the globe to compete in Japan’s Pancrase, an early form of what we now know as MMA. Rutten endured some losses at first, but beginning in 1995, Bas raised some hell in The Land Of The rising Sun; and proved to be a dominant force. He racked up big wins against the likes of Minoru Suzuki (Pictures), Frank Shamrock (Pictures), Masakatsu Funaki, Jason Delucia (Pictures) and Guy Mezger (Pictures) to be crowned a three-time King Of Pancrase.
Bas may have been done with competition for the time being, but he remained a recognized and respected figure in the sport. Rutten appeared in numerous television and motion picture roles, and also became a popular color commentator for MMA broadcasts. The workhorse also recently became the coach for The Anacondas, a team in the International Fight League (IFL)
As it turns out, Bas was not done when it comes to stepping into battle. He made his return and locked horns with Ruben Villarreal at WFA King Of The Streets on July 22.
All that being said, September 2 marks a chance to meet and learn from one of the all-time MMA greats. Enrollment ($100 per person) is limited. Don’t be shut out, sign up now! Below are further details on the seminar.

Bas invaded the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1998, and became
UFC Heavyweight Champion after besting Kevin Randleman (Pictures) in a war that went into overtime.
Rutten was never defeated for the championship. Bas vacated the
title; and entered the Middleweight Division in an attempt to
become the first multi-weight class UFC Champion. A host of serious
injuries kept him from that goal, and forced Bas into early
retirement.
