Ray Borg on Eagle FC’s 165-pound Division: ‘It Could End Up Evolving the Sport’

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship 125-pound title challenger Ray Borg believes that Eagle Fighting Championship might reshape the future of the sport. On the upcoming EFC 44 card, Borg (14-5, 0-0 Eagle FC) will lock horns with fellow UFC alum Cody Gibson in a 135-pound clash. While talking with Sherdog, “The Tazmexican Devil” praised Eagle FC’s work to improve the sport, especially by adding a new weight category between lightweight and welterweight. The Jackson-Wink MMA Acoma representative speculated that more promotions might follow Eagle FC’s example soon.

“I think that’s really interesting, you know?” Borg said of the 165-pound division. “It could kind of set some new stuff for the MMA game. That’s one of the weight classes that always had a lot of controversies because it’s the biggest gap in terms of weight classes. Most weight classes are only 10 pounds apart, opposed to welterweights 15 pounds apart. It could be something that Eagle FC does or it could be something that a lot of promotions start to take after. We’ve all seen it happen before. Although the UFC is the premier stage for everything, as soon as the UFC started incorporating early weigh-ins, everyone else started incorporating early weigh-ins. It could be very much the same to where this turns out to be successful, people like it, it’s that good in-between for those cruiserweights, it could either be an Eagle FC thing or it could end up evolving the sport.”

In the interview, Borg also stated that he signed with the Khabib Nurmagomedov-led organization for more than one fight, unveiled his intentions about his weight category, and more.
