Alex Gilpin: Learning from a Loss

PFL 2 was a learning lesson for Professional Fighters League’s Alex Gilpin. The former Chosen Few Fighting Championships featherweight titleholder headlined his first major mixed martial arts event, against Lance Palmer, and did it all on an ESPN platform. In the end, he views his first loss since 2016 as another beneficial progression in his developing career.

“Truthfully, I felt better than I ever have. I was in the best shape of my life,” Gilpin told Sherdog. “I wasn’t too nervous. I was confident going in [and] I felt like I got off to a great start. At some point in the fight, I just started forcing things and tried to rush a finish, instead of just fighting, and that cost me. As far as it being a big stage, or headlining an ESPN card, that had nothing to do with it. [Mistakes] happen, I guess. What can I do about it now? Learn from it, and just get better.”

Getting better -- win or lose -- is always a priority for the 27-year-old. The former Texas state wrestling champion, and 14-fight veteran, understands cage time will be a key element in his maturity as a mixed martial artist, as he heads into his upcoming bout at PFL 5 on Thursday at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

“Each and every single time I step in that cage I’m getting more and more comfortable. There is no replacement for that in-cage experience under the lights [and in front of] the cameras. Regardless of how nervous I am, it is an unfamiliar spot to be. Just that in general, getting my toes wet in there, will help.”

In this exclusive conversation with Sherdog, Gilpin talked in-depth on competing on his most notable stage yet, and the missteps in his May loss to Lance Palmer. He also touched on changes in watching a lot of video on future opponents, his preparation for facing Freddy Assuncao Thursday night, his love of nature and much more.
