For John Lineker, There Was Only ‘One’ Option in Free Agency

Oct 24, 2019

In July, Brazilian bantamweight John Lineker became one of the most sought after free agents in the sport. His exciting and violent fighting style garnered interest from quite a few mixed martial arts organizations. Yet for the 29-year-old, one (no pun intended) organization stood out from the rest, and six days after his release from the Ultimate Fighting Championship he was the newest addition to the One Championship roster. Days away from his debut at “Dawn of Valor” in Jakarta’s Isora Senayan arena, Lineker talked with Sherdog about his decision to take his talents to Asia.

“It was a mixture of a few things,” Linker told Sherdog about why he chose One Championship. “It was a good proposal. I think that it’s an event that gives more value to the fighting itself than the trash talking, and also, their weight system is more suited for me too.”

Along with touching on his decision to join One Championship, Lineker talked about if he was surprised by the sudden end to his 16-bout run with the UFC. His manager Alex Davis chimed in on if there were any serious offers from other promotions, and how his new deal will also allow him to box, something he has wanted to do for some time. Conversation also included his thoughts on his opponent Friday, Muin Gafurov. As well as his passions away from MMA. Such as spending time with his family, playing video games and his love of the television show “The Walking Dead.”
