  • Sherdog MMA Pick’Em: UFC on Fox 3 Final Report By: Sherdog.com Staff

The Rousimar Palhares leg lock the masses envisioned never came to fruition at UFC on Fox 3 “Diaz vs. Miller” on Saturday at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. Alan Belcher made sure of it.

Palhares expectedly snatched a leg and secured a takedown from the start, fishing for kneebars and his trademark heel hook. Belcher weathered the engagement and turned the tables, threatening the Brazilian Top Team member with a twister before moving into top position and settling in guard. From there, he let his hands and elbows fly. Before long, Palhares was shying away from contact, forcing referee Dan Miragliotta to intervene.

Nearly eight out of 10 (77 percent) players in the Sherdog.com MMA Pick’Em fantasy game expected Palhares to walk away with a victory.

  • McGee-Belcher a Natural Next Bout By: Jason Probst

Alan Belcher would make an excellent next opponent for Court McGee. | File Photo: Sherdog.com

After their impressive wins at UFC Fight Night 25 on Saturday in New Orleans, the time is now to make an Alan Belcher-Court McGee matchup. With the middleweight division as it stands, Belcher, 27, and McGee, 26, are in the enviable position of being relatively young enough to reasonably expect big-time improvement in the next couple years. Yet, both are able to compete in a manner that is effective and exciting now.

Showdowns between up-and-coming bad asses are their own animal, and they are often intriguing. McGee’s intensity and conditioning matched against Belcher’s dynamic standup and excellent jiu-jitsu makes for a bout with the kind of two-way aggression that can only be described as win-win.

Such fights are always fun to look back on a few years down the road, as kind of a remember-when chapter, when both men have progressed. Plus, given the style matchup, I am not sure a loss for either guy would be nearly as damaging as pitting either of them against a ranked contender. Sometimes, it is just fun to line up two young bucks and let them collide. McGee-Belcher is that kind of match.

  • UFC 107 Primer By: Jake Rossen

    D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

As an event orchestrated almost exclusively around a coming-home gimmick for Memphis native Quinton Jackson, Saturday’s “UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez” fails rather miserably. (Jackson is too busy becoming the next Brian Bosworth.) As a card bolstered by two homicidal 155 lb. fighters, it should be judged for what it is, not what it could’ve been.

With Georges St. Pierre having beaten 170 lb. aspirations out of him, B.J. Penn appears to be the most mentally and physically functional fighter of his entire nine-year career. He’s hell to take down, more or less immune to submissions, and shows off cleaner hands every time he engages. Gone is the fighter who bounced from class to class, ballooning up to take on Lyoto Machida in Japan like an MMA De Niro.

To know a great athlete is diluting his own mark by toiling in weird, random bids is frustrating. He’s found his fit. It’s a pleasure to watch. Keep him away from the white flour.
