Anderson Silva is one of 16 finalists in ESPN Sports Science’s search for the Greatest Athlete of All Time. | File Photo: Sherdog.com
Longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva is one of 16 finalists in ESPN Sports Science’s search for the Greatest Athlete of All Time.
The other 15 athletes up for consideration are as follows: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Muhammad Ali, Mark Allen, Bo Jackson, Roger Federer, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Pele, Tony Hawk, Carl Lewis, Wayne Gretzky, Jim Brown and Dale Earnhardt Sr. ESPN Sports Science has paired the 16 finalists into eight tournament-style brackets to be voted on by fans. Silva is opposed by Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history.
Silva has held the UFC middleweight crown since Oct. 14, 2006, defending it a record 10 times. The 37-year-old Brazilian has never lost inside the Octagon, compiling a perfect 16-0 record. Fourteen of those wins have come by knockout, technical knockout or submission, seven of them inside one round. Silva last appeared in a non-title bout at UFC 153 in October, when he moved up to 205 pounds and dispatched Stephan Bonnar with a first-round knee strike to the solar plexus.
ESPN will unveil the winner of the first matchup -- Jordan vs. Woods -- on “SportsCenter” this Sunday. The Silva-Phelps winner will face the Jordan-Woods survivor in the quarterfinals.

Anderson Silva may soon know the identity of his next challenger. | File Photo
Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White appears to have whittled down the list of potential challengers for middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva to two men: Rashad Evans and Chris Weidman.
Evans must first clear the considerable hurdle in front of him in a showdown with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the UFC 156 co-main event. A longtime standout at 205 pounds, he lost a unanimous decision to champion Jon Jones in April, the result perhaps facilitating a divisional move. Evans has compiled a stellar 12-2-1 mark since joining the UFC, with all but one of those bouts taking place at 205 pounds.
The unbeaten Weidman has plenty of hype and substance surrounding him. A Serra-Longo Fight Team representative, the 28-year-old last fought at UFC on Fuel TV 4 in June, when he delivered a vicious finish against Mark Munoz. Weidman remains a bit of a question mark, however, as he continues to recover from shoulder surgery.

Breen and Marchman examine the expectations and outcomes of Georges St. Pierre at UFC 154, how they've changed or intensified people's desire to see the welterweight ruler Anderson Silva and whether or not that superfight is even feasible. The two also delve deeper into the current UFC's business rhythm to assess why superfights are suddenly all the rage for Dana White and others.
The pair also investigate the political ironies of the UFC pushing its superstars for major fights, who and when St. Pierre will fight next, the potential appeal of Johny Hendricks as a title challenger and much more.
Grab your credential and get a seat in “Press Row.”
