Gabriel Green vs. Jalin Turner

Round 1

Turner erupted for a quick finish.
Turner uses long punches to control the range before stepping in with an uppercut. Turner backs Green into the fence and misses a knee. A right hand to the jaw connects, however, and Green’s hands drop and he falls to his knees. Turner follows up with a left hook and Jason Herzog has seen enough.

Chinzo Machida vs. Jamar Ocampo

Round 1

Machida adopts his traditional karateka stance before the featherweights clinch up. Ocampo drives his opponent into the fence and then down the the canvas. Ocampo steps into full mount briefly, but Machida explodes to his feet. Machida tags Ocampo with a right hand. Ocampo dodges an uppercut and takes his man down, landing inside of Machida’s guard. Ocampo stays busy, trying to advance position while landing short punches to the body. Ocampo steps through into full mount but fails badly on a rear-naked choke attempt. Ocampo pounds Machida as the karateka attempts to roll out of danger. Machida lands a hard upkick and Ocampo rolls for a leg lock, allowing Machida to return to his feet. Ocampo ducks under a spinning kick and takes Machida right back down to the canvas. Machida appears to be bleeding near his eye as Ocampo works in full guard with less than one minute remaining.

Round 2

Machida tags Ocampo with a stiff left hand then shoves his man to the canvas following a takedown attempt. Ocampo drops for an ankle pick but Machida shakes his leg free and resumes circling. Ocampo catches a kick and tries to take Machida down. Instead he eats some punches while on all fours. Finally, Ocampo is able to land the takedown. Machida gets back up with a little more than 3:00 to go. Machida lands a head kick followed by a straight right hand. Ocampo drops low for another takedown and gets it. He lands some short elbows from half guard before transitioning to side control. Machida reverses into full mount but he can’t hold the position. Ocampo gets back control and then mounts Machida. He frames an arm-triangle choke but he’s too close to do anything with it before time runs out.

Machida finished Ocampo in the final frame.
Machida lands a kick to the body then sidesteps a lunging takedown attempt by Ocampo. Ocampo gets an underhook and pushes Machida into the fence, where he lands some short right hands to the ribs. He drops low for a takedown but Machida easily avoids the try and the featherweights return to the center of the cage. Ocampo goes for a single leg and pushes his foe into the fence. Ocampo drives for the takedown and is able to trip Machida down. Machida uses the cage to return to his feet and the combatants separate. Machida throws a hard kick to the body that’s partially blocked, then lands a right hand before stuffing a takedown try. Machida sends his foe stumbling backward with a straight right hand. Ocampo appears to still be dazed before another right hand to the jaw sends him face down to the canvas. The contest is halted immediately.

Kevin Casey vs. Keith Berry

Round 1

Casey lands a hard kick to Berry’s lead leg. Casey connects with a pair of overhand lefts before retuning to the low kick. A high kick from Casey is blocked by Berry, and the “TUF 17” vet briefly clinches with his foe before the separate. Casey drops Berry with a right hook in an ensuing exchange and he pounces for the finish with ground-and-pound. Casey postures up inside guard as he rains down hard punches from above. Berry, who is now bleeding, is able to return to his feet. He marches forward and throws a hard kick to the body. Casey sends Berry tumbling backward with a right hook over the top. Casey assumes top position and mauls Berry with punches from above. Berry is able to maintain full guard but he continues to eat heavy right hands from his opponent. Casey continues to alternate between punches with elbows with less than a minute remaining. Berry is able to return to his feet in the round’s waning seconds.

Casey and Berry fought to a draw.
Berry lands an inside low kick early. Casey drops his hands briefly and resets as his pace seems to have slowed from the opening stanza. Berry goes with a straight right hand to the body. Casey executes a perfectly timed level change and dumps Berry to the canvas in the center of the cage. Berry is staying active with short punches from his back, while Casey is warned by referee Blake Grice to work. Casey finally creates some space and lands a left hand and some elbows. With one minute to go, Grice finally orders a standup. Berry lands a combination upstairs and then backs off. An overhand right from Berry is countered a Casey hook, but neither lands clean.

Round 3

Berry lands a body-head combination in an initial exchange. Berry lands another combination, this time to Casey’s head. Casey changes levels for a takedown as Berry advances but Berry shrugs him off. Berry charges forward and lands a three punch combination. He maintains that aggression and fires off another combination upstairs. A kick to the body from Berry is blocked. Casey’s output has waned dramatically, as it’s Berry who is landed the majority of the offense with quick punching combinations. Casey tries for another takedown but Berry stuffs it and shoves him away. Berry lands a jab followed by a right hand. Casey catches Berry coming in with a left hook. Berry is unfazed and continues his forward pressure.

Guilherme Vasconcelos vs. John Mercurio

Round 1

Vasconcelos begins by attacking the inside leg of his opponent. Mercurio answers with some leg kicks of his own. Both men throw heavy leather in an exchange but neither lands anything clean. “Bomba” catches a kick and takes Mercurio down near the fence. Vasconcelos lands some right hands to the face and then pulls his foe away from the cage. Mercurio is able to reverse the position and return to his feet. Vasconcelos has a high kick blocked but he takes Mercurio down again. Vasconcelos works to take Mercurio’s back but he can only get one hook in. Vasconcelos lands a knee as Mercurio stands and answers with a punching flurry. A right hand from Vasconcelos connects. Vasconcelos catches a kick and puts Mercurio on his back again. Vasconcelos rides his opponent while landing right hands to the head.

Vasconcelos blasted Mercurio.
Mercurio sticks his man with a pair of jabs and a straight right hand. Vasconcelos stalks Mercurio near the fence and puts him on shaky legs with an overhand right. Mercurio is reeling as “Bomba” puts his lights out with a follow-up right uppercut. Mercurio hits the canvas and Vasconcelos follows him down, pounding away with unanswered jackhammer left hands to the head before referee Mike Beltran intervenes on Mercurio’s behalf.

Derek Anderson vs. Derek Campos

Round 1

Campos lands a solid counter left hand in an early exchange. Anderson throws a combination but Campos slips the offering. Anderson lands a right hand and follows with a body kick. Campos catches it and counters with a couple rights. A straight left gets through for Campos. Anderson ducks under a punch and eats a knee. A left hand from Campos briefly drops Anderson to a knee, but he appears to be fine. Anderson raises his arms and implores Campos to bring it. They continue to trade in the pocket. Anderson uses a stiff jab to keep Campos at range, then misses on a jumping knee. Anderson connects cleanly on a one-two and then another straight left. Anderson is beginning to increase his volume as the round progresses, while Campos is content to head hunt. Anderson lands a left to the body and a right hook to the head. A right hand over the top by Anderson finds a home. A cut appears to have been opened above Campos right eyebrow.

Round 2

Anderson comes out with a pair of kicks to the body. Anderson jabs away but Campos marches forward with big uppercuts and hooks, and a couple find their mark. Campos lands a couple heavy hooks and snaps Anderson’s head back. Anderson lands a kick to the body. Campos lands a stinging left jab as Anderson advances. Campos ducks under a right hand and lands some punches on the inside. Campos fires off another big combination but just misses Anderson’s chin. Anderson finds Campos’ body with another kick and then lands a straight punch. In an ensuing exchange Campos drops Anderson with an uppercut but nearly gets caught in a triangle. They return to their feet and Campos pushes Anderson into the fence. They separate with less than a minute to go. Campos resumes attacking with uppercuts and hooks in a close quarters exchange. Campos leads with a Superman punch and follows up with several more power shots to put his stamp on the round.

Campos took a unanimous nod over Anderson.
Campos lands another Superman punch and pushes Anderson into the fence. Anderson shoves him away and they return to the center of the cage. Anderson lands several jabs and follows up with a straight right hand. Campos presses forward with power punches and connects with a left hook before tying Anderson up. They separate and Campos blocks a high kick. Campos changes levels and explodes for a double-leg takedown. Anderson scrambles up and goes back to work with his jab. Campos closes the distance and lands an uppercut. Anderson knocks Campos’ mouthpiece free with a two-punch combination. He follows up with a kick to the body but Campos catches it and takes him down. Campos gets to work from full guard. John McCarthy pauses the action to re-insert Campos mouthguard. Campos attempts to take Anderson’s back in a scramble but can’t get both hooks in, and Anderson is able to briefly assume top position. They stand and both men trade in close quarters as the bell sounds.

Georgi Karakhanyan vs. Emmanuel Sanchez

Round 1

Karakhanyan lands a couple left hooks then tags Sanchez in the middle of a spinning attack. Sanchez is throws a one-two combination followed by a kick to the body. Sanchez tries to land an outside trip but Karakhanyan pushes him into the fence. Karakhanyan gets the takedown and then secures a rear waist lock. He can’t get his hooks in, so he gives up on taking Sanchez’s back. Karakhanyan sneaks a knee around to Sanchez’s face. Sanchez is looking to break his opponent’s grip while Karakhanyan lands the occasional knee to the thigh. Sanchez is able to turn and get his back to the fence. Karakhanyan remains determined and takes his foe down for a moment. Sanchez stands and Karakhanyan secures the rear-waist lock again. Sanchez catches Karakhanyan riding too high and reverses the position. Sanchez gets Karakhanyan’s back and he looks for a rear-naked choke with a body triangle locked in as Karakhanyan stands. He can’t secure the choke before the round ends.

Round 2

Karakhanyan shoots early and pushes Sanchez into the fence. Sanchez turns and fires off a series of punches with Karakhanyan’s back to the fence. Sanchez lands a takedown and works to pass his opponent’s guard. Sanchez stays busy with pressure and short punches and elbows from half guard. Sanchez alternates hammerfists to the head and punches to Karakhanyan’s body as the intensity of his attack increases. Karakhanyan attempts to use his legs to create space but he gets a warning for landing an upkick while Sanchez is on his knees. After a pause, the action is resumed with Sanchez in top position with a little more than a minute remaining. Karakhanyan attempts to stand but he still has a knee down when Sanchez lands a pair of knees to the head. A doctor is called into the cage to examine Karakhanyan and “Insane” is eventually cleared to continue. However, Sanchez is penalized a point for the illegal blows. Sanchez immediately goes to work with punching combinations and kicks. Karakhanyan changes levels for a takedown but Sanchez executes a sweep and ends up on his opponent’s back. He spends the end of the round hunting for a rear-naked choke.

Sanchez won by majority decision.
Karakhanyan gets a takedown within the first 20 seconds and lands in Sanchez’s full guard. Karakhanyan looks to land punches from above but is having difficulty in his foe’s active guard. Sanchez is working to frame an armbar but Karakhanyan pulls free and transitions to his adversary’s back. Karakhanyan has back control with both men in the seated position against the fence. Karakhanyan leans back and locks in a body triangle. Sanchez continues to do a good job of defending the choke attempt, but he can’t escape the position. Sanchez tries to buck out of the position and is warned against landing a headbutt. Karakhanyan keeps back control as the horn sounds.

Ralek Gracie vs. Hisaki Kato

Round 1

Both fighters adopt a deliberate approach to begin the action before trading leg kicks. Gracie lands a kick to the body and a side kick to the body. He slips to the floor and Kato fires off an uppercut. Gracie feints a front kick several times before Kato steps in and lands a leg kick. Kato remains patient, looking to find the timing of his opponent. The Japanese fighter sidesteps a massive right hook from Gracie. Kato snaps an inside leg kick to Gracie’s lead leg. About halfway through the frame neither fighter has landed anything significant and boos are starting to rain down from the Forum. Gracie moves forward and Kato attempts to counter but his punches miss the mark. Kato goes back to the inside leg kick. A superman punch by Kato drives Gracie back into the fence and he pounces with follow up punches. Gracie gets up with 10 seconds to go and the round ends with no further damage done.

Round 2

Kato opens with another kick to the inside of Gracie’s lead leg. The deliberate offense continues from both sides, prompting more boos from those in attendance. Both middleweights appear reluctant to engage, and nothing of note has been landed in the first two minutes of the frame. Kato is stalking Gracie, and he misses a body kick. Referee Jason Herzog calls time and orders the fighters to be more aggressive. Kato complies, landing a kick to the body followed by a left hand to the head. Kato charges forward with a left hand to the head and another kick to the body before backing away. Kato kicks Gracie’s lead leg, then resets. Kato again goes with the rear kick to the body of Gracie. Gracie has not even attempted much in the way of offense as time winds down. Kato throws an uppercut and a head kick before the round ends, but both are blocked.

Kato and Gracie produced a stinker.
Kato returns to his focus on Gracie’s lead leg as the final stanza begins. Gracie misses on a spinning side kick to the midsection and Kato presses forward and lands another leg kick. A knee from Kato nearly lands as Gracie ducks his head. Gracie shoots for a takedown and pushes Kato into the cage. Gracie looks to trip Kato to the mat but the Japanese fighter maintains his balance. Gracie has a body lock and Kato is warned for grabbing the fence. Kato shoves Gracie away and rushes forward with a pair of body kicks. Gracie takes advantage of his foe’s aggression and gets the takedown. Gracie is in full guard, and Kato appears to be content to control the head of his black belt adversary. Gracie opts to land short punches to the ribs. Gracie passes to side control, then steps to full mount with with about 45 seconds remaining. Gracie lands some right hands to the side of the head as Kato hangs on for dear life. Gracie tries to posture up and increase the intensity of his ground-and-pound but he can’t land anything significant before the round ends.

Paul Daley vs. Brennan Ward

Daley delivered a frightening knockout.
Daley lands a low kick then goes to the well again. Ward catches it and throws the Brit down. He urges him right back up. Moments later, Ward shoots for a takedown and gets it. “Irish” unloads with punches as Daley returns to his feet. A left hook from Daley gets through and appears to daze Ward. Ward takes Daley down near the fence. Ward attempts to work his way to Daley’s back as the UFC veteran stands. Daley frees himself and fires a spinning back elbow on the break that catches Ward on the chin. Ward backpedals and Daley launches himself at his opponent with a leaping left knee. It lands cleanly, and Ward goes stiff and is unconscious as his head hits the canvas. The welterweight bout is halted instantly, and Daley has delivered an early nominee for 2017 “Knockout of the Year.”

Tito Ortiz vs. Chael Sonnen

Round 1

Ortiz went out with a bang.
Ortiz lands a right hand following a Sonnen leg kick. Ortiz gets a single leg takedown but Sonnen quickly sweeps into a front headlock position. Sonnen is looking to set up a brabo choke but gives up on the hold. The Oregon native drops back for a guillotine but he only has Ortiz in half guard. Ortiz pops his head free and steps to full mount. Ortiz creates some space and lands a couple elbows. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” moves to Sonnen’s back and hunts for a rear-naked choke. His arm doesn’t appear to be completely under Sonnen’s chin and he doesn't appear to have the choke secured at the proper angle, but Ortiz continues to squeeze. Sonnen hangs on for as long as he can, but his face turns purple as Ortiz keeps cranking the maneuver. Finally, Sonnen has no choice but to tap out, giving Ortiz a victory in what he says will be his final mixed martial arts bout.
