Colby Covington vs. Wagner Silva Gomes

Round 1

Covington lands a leg kick and one to the body, then slides backward to avoid Gomes’ wide counter right. The American circles the outside, changes levels and grabs for Gomes’ legs, but the Brazilian shoves him away and reclaims the center of the Octagon. A few low kicks land for Gomes, who’s still whiffing on his bombing right hooks as Covington evades well. Covington tries a leaping knee, gets his foot caught but yanks it away before Gomes can capitalize. Another double-leg attempt midway through the round yields a takedown for Covington, who quickly passes to side control on Gomes’ left and frames up an arm-triangle choke. Gomes blocks the choke by rolling along as Covington tries to pass to the other side, and both welterweights come back to their feet from the whizzer. Covington shoots a low double against the fence, tries to pick the ankle of Gomes and takes a few elbows to the head for his troubles. Covington switches to a body lock, has to defend against a loose headlock and drags Gomes down with 30 seconds remaining.

Covington put in work.
Covington gets backed up to the fence and partially blocks a knee, but part of it seems to have connected as the wrestler immediately shoots on Gomes’ legs. After a brief struggle on the fence, Covington gets his takedown and works short ground-and-pound from half guard on Gomes’ right side, his left side flush to the fence. As Covington tries to pass to the other side, Gomes finds the opportunity to stand, though he’s held against the fence once he’s back on his feet. Covington trips Gomes to his knees, can’t hold him down and stands with the “TUF: Brazil” contestant to throw short left hands in the tie-up. A knee hits Gomes square in the cup, and referee Keith Peterson steps in to pause the action. Gomes only takes 30 seconds to recover before the fight is back underway with about two minutes remaining in the round. Covington circles the outside, trying to avoid Gomes’ punches before shooting again. The first takedown attempt is rebuffed, but the next one forces Gomes against the cage. Gomes widens his base and puts his back to the fence, so Covington keeps him there for the remainder of the round, landing short left hands.

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Covington

Round 3

Covington takes a slapping high kick to the face and a short left hook to the temple, causing him to backpedal and Gomes to come chasing. Seconds later, Covington reverses his momentum and changes levels, easily flooring Gomes with another takedown. Gomes manages to keep Covington at bay with butterfly guard this time, but the American Top Team fighter keeps working and passes to half guard, where he thumps Gomes’ ribs with short punches. Covington goes upstairs now, peppering Gomes with left hands and again looking for the arm-triangle choke. Gomes does well to defend the potential submission but he’s looking tired underneath with half a round remaining, while Covington is staying active with topside ground-and-pound. Gomes rolls to his knees, allowing Covington to sink in one hook and slap on a rear-naked choke. The RNC gets Gomes to go belly-down, where Covington is able to get his second hook in place, flatten out his opponent and force the tap.

The Official Result

Colby Covington def. Wagner Silva Gomes via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R3 3:26

Thomas Almeida vs. Tim Gorman

Round 1

Gorman blitzes Almeida with wild punches, backing the UFC newcomer up to the fence before changing levels and pulling him to the ground. Almeida tries to post and stand, but Gorman leaps on his back and applies a body triangle, then stays latched on as Almeida stands up. “Thominhas” tries to punch over his shoulder, but Gorman is throwing under-the-armpit punches of his own from back-mount while simultaneously fishing for a choke. Almeida is hopping up and down, trying to shake the slipping Gorman off his back, and two minutes into the round, he succeeds. Now sporting some redness beneath his right eye, Almeida gets some space and comes back at Gorman throwing heavy hooks and uppercuts. Almeida takes his time coming inside, eventually finding a home for a stiff jab and a lovely uppercut to Gorman’s ribcage. Gorman jabs back, shoots a high double-leg and gets swept out of the pocket by an Almeida right hand. Another right is waiting for Gorman on the next shot, and a knee follows behind it. Almeida is a flurry of limbs now, catching Gorman with another knee, a head kick off a Thai clinch and follow-up punches near the fence when the Iowan goes defensive. Gorman can’t complete a shot and staggers backward, covering up on the fence as Almeida tries for the finish, but time runs out.

Round 2

Almeida was too much for Gorman.
Almeida is back on the attack to start round two, pushing forward with hooks and uppercuts that have Gorman backing up toward the fence and grabbing for a takedown which isn’t there. When he catches Gorman leaning over, Almeida mixes up his attack with knees and low kicks, then goes back to swinging fists. Gorman tries to circle away but Almeida follows and lands a nice right hook to the temple which sends Gorman in the other direction. Almeida puts a left hand in Gorman’s breadbasket, misses with the follow-up right and sticks a leg kick. Gorman is looking tentative now, throwing single punches and backing up with a high guard when Almeida attacks. Meanwhile, it’s more of the same from Almeida, more leg kicks and body shots, more hooks that continue to redden Gorman’s face. Gorman loses his mouthguard with about a minute remaining, and Almeida thoughtfully gives referee Mario Yamasaki a pause to replace it. When action resumes, Almeida attacks Gorman’s body with left hands and knees. Gorman grimaces and powers through a late takedown, but Almeida is back on his feet and sprawling before the round ends.

TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Almeida
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-8 Almeida

Round 3

Almeida’s face is actually looking the worse of the two bantamweights heading into the final frame, a huge shiner having sprung up beneath his right eye. Gorman sticks a couple jabs on it at the start of the round, before Almeida gets back to business with his body shots and kicks. A left hook gets through for Gorman, but again his single shots are being overwhelmed by Almeida’s volume attack. Hard, straight left hands are scoring for Almeida, along with inside leg kicks and the occasional level elbow. He backs up Gorman to the fence and leaps in with a knee to the body, so Gorman dips out to his left. Two minutes left in the fight and Almeida has a left high kick deflected by Gorman’s forearm. He chases after the American, looking for a step-in knee, but Gorman covers up well. Almeida lands a body kick, a left hook and then slides his head off-center when Gorman returns fire. Another left hook and a body shot from Almeida, and he yanks away his leg as Gorman tries to grab hold for a late takedown.

Charlie Brenneman vs. Leandro Silva

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: L. Fabri/Sherdog.com

Buscape easily put away Brenneman.
Brenneman goes straight after Silva’s legs on a high double-leg and gets caught in a front headlock. Silva releases and the lightweights reset, but it’s only seconds before Brenneman goes shooting again. This time, he tangles up Silva’s legs and puts the Brazilian on the ground less than one minute into the fight. Silva wraps up Brenneman tightly, but as soon as he opens his guard to scoot backward toward the fence, Brenneman passes to half guard. Silva is already sporting a nasty hematoma on the right side of his temple as he sits up and tries to keep Brenneman at bay. “Buscape” manages to get back to his feet, then turns the tables on Brenneman by sitting down on a takedown attempt and forcing the American to the canvas. Brenneman is quickly back on his feet, where he drags Silva down with a single-leg near the fence. Silva stands, gets double-legged again, and this time hits the switch to put Brenneman in a seated position against the cage. Brenneman posts and stands, and Silva tries to take back-mount but only gets one hook secured as they fall to the ground. One hook is all Silva needs to slip his left arm under Brenneman’s chin and clamp down, forcing “The Spaniard” to tap out to a rear-naked choke.

The Official Result

Leandro Silva def. Charlie Brenneman via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R1 4:15

Caio Magalhaes vs. Trevor Smith

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: L. Fabri/Sherdog.com

Magalhaes was too spicy for "Hot Sauce."
Magalhaes pushes Smith backward with a blocked high kick, misses with an uppercut and then connects with a pair of grazing hooks. Smith tries to clinch up, gets blasted with a knee and then takes a sledgehammer punch to the back of the head as he falls to the ground. Magalhaes hooks Smith’s right arm as the American goes belly-down and bashes away with five or six more hammer fists -- at least three of which land on the back of the head -- to knock him unconscious before referee Keith Peterson can intervene.

The Official Result

Caio Magalhaes def. Trevor Smith via KO (Knee and Punches) R1 0:31

Diego Rivas vs. Rodolfo Rubio Perez

Round 1

The featherweights meet in the center and Rivas swings with a wide right hand which Rubio ducks underneath. Rubio misses with a pair of punches, comes sailing at Rubio with a flying knee and gets thrown to the ground out of mid-air. Rivas grinds with forearms and short punches through Rubio’s active guard for 90 seconds before Rubio is able to push out and scramble to his feet. They tangle in the middle of the cage, where Rubio grabs hold of Rivas’ back and pulls him to the mat. Rubio twists around with ease to take top position and postures up in Rivas’ closed guard to drop a couple punches. Rivas tries an armbar, gets rolled to his knees and momentarily winds up underneath Rubio again. Rivas hits a sweep a few seconds later and gets busy with hard ground-and-pound, though the explosion lasts only a few seconds. Another burst of offense comes from Rivas with about 20 seconds on the clock, and he finishes the round on top.

Round 2

Rivas decisioned Rubio with ease.
There’s not much in the way of engagement nor clean offense through 90 seconds of round two, with both men throwing single shots and either deflecting or backpedaling away from the other’s strikes. Two minutes in, Rivas catches a kick and hustles Rubio to the ground, where Rivas lands on top in half guard. Rivas tries a kimura on the far-side arm, can’t get it and instead loops Rubio’s head to attempt a north-south choke. Rubio sweeps to the top with 80 seconds left in the round, stifles an armbar attempt from Rivas and passes to side control in the process. Rubio takes the back in the final half minute, but Rivas simply turns around and takes side control from the unsecured position.

Round 3

The featherweights again spend the first minute of the round swinging and mostly missing with wild, sloppy strikes. Rubio goes after a single-leg, defended by Rivas, who backs up against the fence. Rubio holds him there, gets a rear waist lock and sits down to pull Rivas to the canvas. Rubio gets on Rivas’ back and begins working for a rear-naked choke with both hooks in. Rivas peels his hands away and turns around to take top position. Rivas stands over the prone Rubio, throws a chopping kick to the leg and dives back to the ground. Rubio drives forward and pushes Rivas against the cage, working for a single-leg as the fight enters its final 90 seconds. It’s Rivas who gets the drop on Rubio, however, and finishes the fight on top.

Nina Ansaroff vs. Juliana de Lima Carneiro

Round 1

Ansaroff closes the distance on Lima with a three-punch combination and underhooks the Brazilian against the cage. As she holds Lima there, referee Keith Peterson warns Ansaroff not to grab the fence. Lima shoves her backward and Ansaroff falls to the ground, where “Ju Thai” follows and sets up in her opponent’s open guard. Ansaroff tries to kick Lima away and eats some ground-and-pound, while Lima stands briefly before coming back down to the mat. Ansaroff tries an omoplata, can’t keep hold of Lima but does manage to scramble to her feet. When Lima tries to muscle her against the fence again, Ansaroff grabs a guillotine and jumps guard. Lima struggles for a moment but eventually pops her head free and resets herself in Ansaroff’s guard. Lima gets in a couple good left hands as the final 30 seconds tick down, but she’s caught with an illegal upkick as Ansaroff tries to push her away. Referee Keith Peterson gives Lima time to recover before restarting the fight with 15 seconds to go, allowing Lima to close out the frame on top.

Round 2

Lima took two rounds from Ansaroff.
Ansaroff forces Lima backward with a turning kick to the midsection, then rushes at the Brazilian with a quick hook-knee combination that has Lima shooting for a takedown. Lima puts Ansaroff on her back, now mindful of the upkick as she comes down to the ground. Ansaroff catches Lima sleeping with her right arm in guard, swings her legs around and tries to stretch out the limb for an armbar. Lima defends well, yanking the arm free and dropping back to attempt a heel hook. Ansaroff peels Lima’s hands away to defend the submission but surrenders top position in the process, and now it’s Lima in Ansaroff’s guard. There’s not enough action on the ground, and referee Peterson stands the women up with about one minute left in the round. Ansaroff lands a chopping low kick, a solid kick to the midsection and finishes the round with a spinning back kick. Lima tries a takedown but can’t finish it as time runs out.

Round 3

Lima catches a spinning kick from Ansaroff and tries to hustle her to the ground, but Ansaroff stays standing and reverses to shove Lima up against the fence. Ansaroff lands a couple popping left hands in the clinch while Lima keeps her wrapped up, working for a trip takedown. They spin off the cage briefly, and when they come back, it’s Ansaroff changing levels to attempt a double-leg. Lima gives her a couple elbows to the head before turning her around and attacking Ansaroff’s legs with knee strikes. They trade positions again, Ansaroff throwing knees to the body now. Lima is warned for grabbing the fence before the clinch is broken up by ref Peterson with just over 90 seconds on the clock. Lima shoots a double in center cage, gets stood up and cracked with a left cross from Ansaroff, who brings the fight right back to the fence. Lima is grabbing for a Thai plum, but Ansaroff decks her with a right hand and steps back to disengage. They’re back to striking wth 30 seconds left, and a kick to the chest from Ansaroff sends Lima back toward the fence, where the strawweights finish the fight entangled.

Dhiego Lima vs. Jorge Oliveira

Round 1

Lima sticks a jab in the face of Oliveira, who moves in angles around the outside and pulls up short on his first few attempts at offense, a pair of spinning kicks. A few more jabs from Lima find their marks as he tries to close the gap. When he does get into the pocket, Lima takes a wild left hand on the temple which causes him to circle out. Oliveira chases after him, but Lima grabs hold of his short-notice opponent and pins him to the fence with an underhook. The welterweights trade knees inside, Lima targeting the legs of Oliveira while digging for a double-leg takedown, which he completes with just under two minutes to go. Oliveira tries to hook a leg and stand, but Lima postures up and forces him back to the ground, where Lima steps into full mount. Lima drops a couple elbows and punches before framing up an arm-triangle choke and peeling off to Oliveira’s left side in an attempt to finish the submission. Oliveira turns to his right and breaks the grip, so Lima releases to smash him with hammer fists. As the welterweights get up, Lima delivers a knee to the head of the still-kneeling Oliveira. Referee Wernei Cardoso pauses the action, Oliveira recovers and the round ends without further incident.

Lima took a split decision from Oliveira.
Lima shoots a double-leg against the fence and dumps Oliveira to the ground, where the American Top Team fighter once again takes full mount. Oliveira eats a few punches before he’s able to wrap up Lima, then releases to try and throw some punches in return. Oliveira sits up and Lima briefly attempts to take the back, then ties up one of Oliveira’s arms and forces him back to the ground to deliver more punches. Lima tries a kimura from mount, gives it up and goes back to punching at Oliveira, who is doing well to dodge the damage midway through the round despite being unable to escape. With 1:40 on the clock, Oliveira slips out the back door and kneels, taking a couple hard right hands before defending a no-hooks rear-naked choke from Lima. Somehow, Oliveira is back on his feet with 50 seconds to go, having survived multiple choke attempts and minutes being mounted by Lima. He goes after the younger fighter with punches, but Lima just changes levels and hits another takedown, then goes back to full mount to close out the round.

Oliveira gets to his knees, then back to his feet, where Lima pushes him against the fence and goes straight after anothet takedown. Oliveira defends and shoves Lima away, and Lima rattles off a few jabs and body kicks from range. Both guys look tired midway through the final round, but it’s Oliveira with his hands by his waist jogging away from Lima on the perimeter. Lima shoots another double, elevates Oliveira and slams him to the canvas to set up in half guard. Lima has Oliveira’s right arm trapped and delivers a few punches and elbows before “Blade” can pull the limb free. Back to their feet come the fighters for the final minute... and back down they go 10 seconds later, as Lima hits another slam right in front of his corner. It’s full mount once more for Lima with 20 seconds on the clock, and he finishes the fight swinging tired, mostly blocked punches at Oliveira’s head.

Leon Edwards vs. Claudio Henrique da Silva

Round 1

Edwards opens with a jumping knee, which is caught by Silva and used to put the Englishman on the ground in the center of the cage. Silva has an arm-triangle setup from deep half guard, but Edwards is saving himself by holding the Brazilian’s left leg in place. Silva releases the hold and throws a few short left hands before Edwards kicks him back to full guard, then scrambles back to his feet. Edwards misses with a rangy side kick but snaps a jab in Silva’s face, then another when Silva akwardly tries to step into range. Silva connects with a left hook that appears to daze Edwards, allowing Silva to push him against the fence. Edwards reverses the position and hits a trip takedown, landing in half guard and putting some punches on Silva’s ribs before the Brazilian is able to escape and stand. Edwards catches Silva with a couple awkward left hands, the second of which briefly knocks Silva to the ground. Silva stands and slowly circles the outside, looking a little worse for wear, but he pops Edwards with a right hand coming into the pocket. Edwards closes the distance in the final 15 seconds, trapping Silva on the fence to finish the round with a pair of knees in the clinch.

Silva slipped by Edwards.
The welterweights clash kicks in an exchange, and Silva’s lands to the cup of his opponent. Edwards only takes a few seconds to recover, and they get back to striking, with Edwards landing a short left hook but whiffing on the big follow-up knees. Edwards catches a kick but Silva spins out of it before any harm can come. Silva goes rushing after a long single-leg takedown and winds up face-first on the ground as Edwards backs up. When he gets back up, Silva looks tired as he throws a single punch and misses. Edwards catches another kick, and again Silva cartwheels away. Silva has a trickle of blood running down his left cheek as he eats a left hand on the other side. He wraps up Edwards and leans him against the fence, where the 170-pounders exchange knees to the body. Silva trips Edwards to the ground and slides into full mount, where he begins flailing with hammer fists. Edwards rolls to his stomach, so Silva secures a body triangle and begins throwing left hands from the back mount, finishing the round with a couple shots to the back of the head.

Silva changes levels on the incoming Edwards and hits a takedown in the center of the cage just 10 seconds into the round. The Brazilian nearly gets full mount, instead goes to side control on Edwards’ right side, where Silva throws knees to the body and short right hands to the face. Silva’s cut has worsened slightly but doesn’t appear to be bothering him as the blood is coming from beneath his eye. Edwards reclaims half guard, and now Silva gets to full mount with more than half the round to go. Some solid hammer fists cause Edwards to cover up and turn over, letting Silva take back-mount with another body triangle. Edwards rolls to his back again, and now Silva begins to set up an arm-triangle choke. Edwards breaks the grip, so Silva goes back to dropping punches until he can grab the choke again. This time, when Silva peels off to try and finish, Edwards uses the momentum to sweep and stand. Referee Mario Yamasaki orders Silva to stand, and Edwards spends the closing moments of the round chasing after Silva, landing a right hook and an elbow just before the horn.

Warlley Alves vs. Alan Jouban

Round 1

Alves comes out swinging heavy punches, but it’s a caught kick and trip takedown which puts Jouban on the canvas. Alves stands over his downed opponent, dropping big right hands as Jouban scrambles to stand. Alves seizes Jouban’s neck and drops down to squeeze on a topside guillotine choke. Jouban defends well and extracts himself from the dangerous position to stand up, but Alves stays glued to his man and pins Jouban to the fence with an underhook. The pace slows in the clinch, and referee Keith Peterson calls for work. Alves separates to throw a right hand and eats a counter left from Jouban, who reverses the position and hits Alves with a short elbow on the inside. The welterweights break and Jouban lands an inside leg kick. Jouban presses forward and pops Alves with a hard left hook, then another standing elbow as they clinch on the fence. Alves backs up Jouban with a head kick, but Jouban responds with a thumping liver kick and a punching combo upstairs to finish the close first round.

Alves took a close one over Jouban.
Alves catches a body kick and uses it to rush Jouban to the ground, but it’s Jouban doing work from his back with elbows and right hands from rubber guard. When Jouban releases the position, Alves passes to half guard on the Californian’s right side as they work near the fence. Alves fishes for another guillotine as Jouban kneels and stands, but the Brazilian can’t find it. The fighters separate again, and Jouban has a left high kick deflected by Alves’ arm. Jouban tacks on a leg kick, gets swept ouf of the pocket by a hard right hook, and now Jouban is sporting some damage on the outside of his left eye. Jouban comes up the center with a three-punch combination, backing Alves up toward the fence. Alves waves him on, and Jouban obliges with another stinging left hook. Alves lands a right hook but then gets backed up by a body shot. With 20 seconds left, Alves motions that he caught a finger in the left eye from Jouban’s outstretched right hand. Referee Keith Peterson calls in the cageside doctor, who clears Alves to continue. Jouban responds with a left hook, dodges a spinning kick from Alves and sends a knee up the center. Alves catches Jouban leaning into the pocket and blasts him with an uppercut. A body shot connects for Alves, another right hook around Jouban’s guard. Jouban has a high kick blocked but grazes with a pair of punches behind it. Alves goes upstairs with a kick of his own, answered by Jouban with a kick to the gut. Jouban rocks Alves with a left hand on the end of a combination, then worsens the damage with a heavy elbow in the pocket. Alves backpedals away, misses with a spinning kick and sucks in a deep breath. Alves backs up to the fence, his hands by his waist as Jouban presses in with punches. Jouban is coming on strong with 80 seconds to go, rocking Alves’ head with a one-two down the middle. Alves isn’t throwing much in return as Jouban closes the gap and unloads with another combo.
