This Day in MMA History: Oct. 7

On Oct. 7, 2006, Strikeforce went to Fresno, California, for Strikeforce: Tank vs. Buentello. In the main event, Paul Buentello knocked out David “Tank” Abbott in just 43 seconds. It was the first time Buentello fought in Strikeforce after a brief stint in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

The co-main event saw Josh Thomson submit Duane Ludwig. For Ludwig, it was his first loss in the promotion, while for Thomson the victory extended his winning streak to three and put him in the position in his next fight to win the U.S. lightweight title.

On the card as well was Cain Velasquez, who made his MMA debut that night. He TKO’d Jesse Fujarczyk to kick start a career that saw him become a two-time UFC heavyweight champion. Also fighting was Jason Von Flue, who submitted Eric Wray on the prelims, and Casey Olson, who submitted Bobby Sanchez.

All the fights on the card ended by stoppage and no fights made it into the third round.
