Top 5 Stories of the Week

Featherweight champion Jose Aldo wants to challenge for UFC gold at 155 pounds. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com
It appears that Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight boss Jose Aldo will vie for a second title when next he enters the Octagon.
Following his one-sided unanimous decision victory over Ricardo Lamas at UFC 169 on Feb. 1, Aldo told media that he would accept a lightweight title bid against Anthony Pettis, should UFC President Dana White condone such a meeting.
“It’s not about me. I’m ready. I’ve always been ready. If the fight was tonight, I would fight him. It’s up to the UFC and Dana,” Aldo said. “I want the fight. The fans want the fight. Anthony Pettis wants the fight, so why not? We are ready to fight, so let’s get this fight.”
With Aldo making his feelings known, White did not mince words when asked for his perspective on “Scarface” moving up to challenge the champion at 155 pounds.
“Sounds like we’ve got a fight,” White said. “I’ve been talking about that fight. I like Jose at 155 [pounds]. The weight cut is much easier for him, but again, he’s the king at 145. If he wants to move to 155, I think it’s a huge fight with Pettis.”
Aldo and Pettis were initially expected to square off in 2013, though in that instance Pettis would have cut to 145 pounds for a crack at Aldo’s title. Instead, Pettis was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury and later captured the lightweight belt by submitting Benson Henderson at UFC 164. Aldo has known only victory for the past eight years, scoring eight wins under the World Extreme Cagefighting banner and another six as UFC champion.

Benson “Smooth” Henderson publicly criticized a proposed super fight. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com
Count former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight titleholder Benson Henderson among those who do not support a potential super fight between reigning 155- and 145-pound champions Anthony Pettis and Jose Aldo.
Henderson took to Twitter to voice his disapproval of the proposed blockbuster, calling it “horse manure.” The 30-year-old MMA Lab export on Jan. 25 returned to the Octagon for the first time since surrendering the lightweight crown to Pettis, as he bested the American Kickboxing Academy’s Josh Thomson in a controversial split decision at UFC on Fox 10. Henderson owns a stellar 18-2 mark over his past 20 appearances. Only Pettis has beaten him.
Aldo, meanwhile, has considered moving to 155 pounds for some time. The Nova Uniao ace has won 17 consecutive fights and successfully defended his featherweight championship with a lopsided unanimous decision over Ricardo Lamas at UFC 169. Aldo has held Ultimate Fighting Championship gold longer than any other current champion, but UFC President Dana White has already indicated the Brazilian dynamo would need to vacate his 145-pound throne if he moved up to challenge Pettis.

This Week’s MMA Birthdays: Anthony Pettis Turns 27
By: Brian Knapp
Anthony “Showtime” Pettis turns 27 this week. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com
The sixth lightweight titleholder in the 20-year history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Anthony Pettis will celebrate his 27th birthday on Jan. 27.
The man they call “Showtime” last appeared at UFC 164 in August, when he submitted Benson Henderson with a first-round armbar to capture the 155-pound crown at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in his native Milwaukee. Pettis -- Sherdog.com’s “Breakthrough Fighter of the Year” in 2010 -- has since withdrawn from a scheduled title defense against Josh Thomson and undergone knee surgery that will likely keep him sidelined until sometime this summer. He has compiled a 4-1 record since arriving in the UFC as part of the World Extreme Cagefighting merger three years ago, a unanimous decision defeat to Clay Guida at “The Ultimate Fighter 13” Finale his lone misstep.
Pettis trains out of the Roufusport camp, where he sharpens his skills under four-time world kickboxing champion Duke Roufus. A third-degree black belt in tae kwon do, he has finished each of his last three opponents -- Henderson, Donald Cerrone and Joe Lauzon -- inside one round.
