  • ESPN MMA's Hot Button: Should Fedor Retire? By: Sherdog.com Staff

Every week inside ESPN.com's MMA section, two scribes debate the most pressing issues in the sport in the Hot Button.

This week, Sherdog.com Administrative Editor Jordan Breen and ESPN.com's Chad Dundas debate if Fedor Emelianenko should retire if he loses to Dan Henderson.

If "The Last Emperor" goes down against Henderson, is it an appropriate time to walk away from the sport, given all that he has accomplished? Or, is the Russian heavyweight just in need of intensifying his training and dropping a weight class to compete with the current crop of fighters?

Sherdog.com Administrative Editor Jordan Breen takes a unique look at Saturday’s Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Henderson” main event, which pits former Pride Fighting Championships aces against one another as Fedor Emelianenko (31-3, 1 NC) will toe the line against Dan Henderson (27-8).

  • Quick Quote: ‘Bigfoot’ Thankful Fedor Not Retiring By: Marcelo Alonso

Former EliteXC heavyweight champion Antonio Silva on Fedor Emelianenko’s decision to move forward with his MMA career despite back-to-back losses:

“Thank God. It’s such a waste for a fighter like Fedor to be retired by 34. Anderson Silva lost. GSP lost. [Antonio Rodrigo] ‘Minotauro’ [Nogueira] … all of them lost and they didn’t stop fighting because it’s part of the game. I’m sure Fedor will shine again soon. I just hope that it’s not with me.”

Silva stopped Emelianenko on a second-round technical knockout in the first round of the 2011 Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix in February.

  • Fedor Hits the Silver Screen March 24 in Moscow By: Mike Whitman

Former heavyweight ruler Fedor Emelianenko will make his feature film debut on Thursday, as “The Salamander Key” premieres March 24 in Moscow.

Starring Emelianenko, Michael Madsen and Rutger Hauer, the action film -- previously known as "The 5th Execution" -- was co-produced by Emelianenko's manager and M-1 Global president Vadim Finkelstein.

According to an M-1 press release, the film tells the story of a group of scientists that disappears on a remote island in Southeast Asia. When a rescue team is sent in to recover the missing medical researchers, it becomes apparent that experimental testing was being conducted on both animals and humans, the result of which may cause “imminent, grave, global disaster.”

At this time, it is unknown if the film is scheduled to screen outside of Russia.

Once considered the world's greatest heavyweight, Emelianenko has appeared mortal in his last several performances. Suffering back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, “The Last Emperor” was first submitted by Fabricio Werdum in June and then had his fight with Antonio Silva stopped by the cage-side physician in February. Though Emelianenko hinted at retirement following his most recent defeat, it appears the Russian will return to the cage, perhaps as soon as this summer.

  • Strikeforce ‘Fedor vs. Silva’ Analysis: The Main Card By: Tim Leidecker

Antonio Silva was a heavy underdog on Saturday against Fedor Emelianenko. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

History was made Saturday night at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. Following an undercard that went as expected, most anticipated former Pride Fighting Championships heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko to bounce back from last summer’s shocking upset loss with a win over Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.

However, the sport of MMA has evolved such that things rarely turn out as expected, and “The Last Emperor” was no exception. Below, an in-depth look at the five main-card matches from Saturday night and what matches could be next for the participants.

Valentijn Overeem def. Ray Sefo -- Submission (Neck Crank) 1:37 R1

What happened: Having been in charge of Vitor Belfort’s preparation for UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, seven-time K-1 World Grand Prix finalist Sefo did not have much time to prepare for his Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix alternate bout against Alistair Overeem’s older brother, Valentijn. Still a neophyte on the ground, Sefo was taken down 90 seconds into the match and submitted with a head-scissoring Overeem neck crank. It must have been the first time someone fighting for a major organization tapped out to the “can opener” since Mark Coleman used it on Masaaki Satake in the opening round of the 2000 Pride grand prix.

  • Fedor on the Milk Carton By: Jake Rossen

    Fedor Emelianenko | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Georges St. Pierre fought for a total of 50 minutes in 2010. Anderson Silva fought for nearly as long. Cole Konrad: nearly 70. LeBron James played for upwards of 40 minutes in dozens of games.

Fedor Emelianenko’s total ring time this year: 69 seconds.

This isn’t going to be a blame game. M-1, Emelianenko’s management, obviously has intentions to market their fighter for as much as they can for as long as they can, and that involves protracted negotiations with Showtime/Strikeforce. There’s nothing inherently evil about it: fighters are commodities and the fight business doesn’t promise fairness.

M-1’s shelving of Fedor is frustrating for reasons extending beyond financial demands or their sense of worth. It’s provocative because it completely ignores his mortality. Worse, it ignores his place in the sport.
