The Northern Touch: News and Notes from Western Canada

Marin and Soszynski

Team Canuckles: Optimistic About Future

Team Canuckles instructor Max Marin remained positive about his team’s performance at the KOTC, April 16. The team would end the night with one victory and one loss, seeing Nigel Zettergreen winning his fight by TKO in the first round, while Chad Hamzeh was stopped early by Jeff Legault.

“Chad had a bad fight that night … but he is an awesome fighter,” Marin said. “He is our brother and our teammate. He'll be back with a refocus and he'll continue to succeed.”

“Nigel is one of our awesome fighters,” Marin continued. “Nigel will go far. I hope to see him as a real Canadian representative for the next UFC reality show. I am very proud of Nigel.”

Marin is excited about his team’s future, seeing more and more Canuckles fighters participating throughout Western Canada’s MMA events.

“We just keep growing by winning and by losing,” he said. “You have to experience both. Bottom line is we are growing with our industry. We all mature more every time we fight. My goal for Canuckles is for it to be an accomplished club known in the MMA scene worldwide. I will keep sending more new guys out to fight, and our experienced guys will just get more and more work as well. What you've seen from my club is just the tip of the iceberg of what's to come.”

Marin, who has not fought in a couple years, also had news for Sherdog.com that indeed the Calgary instructor may be returning to the ring.

“Well, the only reason I even started Canuckles is so I could build an army of killers to help me train for my fights,” Marin explained. “I've been working hard, putting in a lot of time finding and training the right guys for our team. Most people don't know that I used to fight world-class guys while teaching my team the basics of an armbar. That's why I took the time off. Now my guys know what’s up and they are excellent training partners for me and each other. I love to fight and I'll be back sooner than you think.”

Krystof Soszynski: Victorious at the Roadhouse Rumble

Krystof Soszynski defeated light heavyweight Jason Day at the Roadhouse Rumble in Lethbridge, Alberta, April 9. The victory for the Winnipeg fighter avenged Soszynski’s first MMA loss to Day in 2003. In stopping Day by TKO in the first round, Soszynski’s record now stands at 9-1, reinforcing the growing sentiment that the Munduruca fighter could be one of Canada’s best light heavyweights.

“The fight went exactly like I planed, I wanted to stand with him and use a lot of movement to tire him out,” Soszynski said. “He has been out of action for a while and I did not think he had the cardio, I have been training really hard on my stand-up and I wanted to showcase those skills. He started to throw a lot of wild punches and kicks at the beginning and I just sidestepped everything and waited patiently for my opportunity. I saw an opportunity and landed a flurry of punches and he dropped. We were able to stomp to the body and I did; the second stomp I landed hit him in the groin by accident and he was awarded five minutes to recover. Once the action started again we both started to throw at the same time and he backed me up to the corner where I grabbed onto his neck (Muay Thai clinch) and he continued with punches to the midsection. After about five shots he was getting tired and I pulled his head down and threw a knee that landed square to the nose and he dropped and could not continue, TKO victory.”

By fighting at the Roadhouse Rumble event, the expected Jason Macdonald-Soszynski fight for the KOTC, April 16, never materialized.

“The Edmonton Commission has a rule where a fighter can fight only 14 days between fights and this would have been only seven days,” Soszynski said. “I signed with Lee Mein first and I did not want to screw him over like others have and I did not want to ruin our relationship; I am not like that. Because I was not at KOTC, I was at the UFC cornering Joe Doerksen. Joe Doerksen believes that I have a good shot at making the UFC in the near future and gave me the opportunity to walk into the Octagon with him so I would not be intimidated when my time comes. I would just like to thank Joe for this great opportunity, it was an experience of a life time.”
