Always Open for Business: Team Gibson

Lance Gibson took some time out of his busy schedule to briefly fill us in on his team’s current fight schedule. As always Team Gibson continues to be represented at events all around North America, including frequent championship title bouts.

TKO 21 will feature Gibson lightweight Blake Fredrickson (7-2) taking on Fabio Holanda (1-3), who defeated Gibson teammate Kultar Gill. Nevertheless, Gibson is confident Fredrickson will match up well against Holanda.

“Blake is training very hard is looking very good,” Gibson said. “Fabio’s style is a much better match-up for Blake rather than Kultar. Should be a good fight and Blake is hard to submit.”

Gill (6-3), who recently lost to Daisuke Sugie at SHOOTO Central 8 on July 3, will quickly be back in action this month at SuperBrawl. Gibson did not name an opponent.

The super lightweight championship bout at TKO 21 between Gibson fighter Ryan Diaz and champion Mark Hominick has been called off due to an injury to Hominick. Gibson views the delay as only a temporary setback, and is confident Diaz can stay focused despite the delay.

“Ryan was upset about the news but is maintaining his workout program and will wait for Sept against Mark,” expressed Gibson.

The card for TKO 21, July 15 in Montreal, Quebec is:

Sam Stout vs. Donald Ouimet (lightweight champion)
Kyle Jensen vs. Jonathan Goulet
James Haourt vs. Thierry Quenneville
Shonie Carter vs. Jason MacDonald
Blake Fredrickson vs. Fabio Holanda
Martin Desilets vs. Serge Lafond
Samuel Foresman vs. Samuel Guillet
Greg Compton vs. Dave Pariseau

Mind, Body, and Soul Grappling Tournament Summary

The Mind, Body and Soul Grappling tournament went off without a hitch June 25 at N.A.I.T. College in Edmonton, Alberta. The day featured great competition in both the amateur, and for the first time in Western Canada, professional matches.

The event’s promoter Mike Yackulic took some time out to speak about the event.

Sherdog.com: How was the overall turnout for the Mind, Body and Soul event?

Mike Yackulic: The turn was great. We had 89 competitors in all making it the largest grappling tournament in Alberta.

Sherdog.com: Who were some of the teams that showed up?

Yackulic: We had Gracie Barra, Vancouver; The Academy, Winnipeg; Munduruca Martial Arts, Winnipeg; Regina BJJ BDB, Calgary; Canadian Mixed Martial Arts Centre, Lethbridge; Canadian Combat Club, Edson; Evolution, Vernon; and several other local clubs as well as competitors from London Ontario and Boston Massachusetts.

Sherdog.com: What were some of the highlights in the competition?

Yackulic: The pankration match between Chris Ade and Brad Cardinal — super display of what two talented athletes can do. Both up-and-coming fighters gave their all. Also 13-year-old Academy Student Samara came out and did a great job competing against the adult women — great display of courage.”

Sherdog.com: What were your thoughts on the pro matches?

Yackulic: It was a great level of talent that was brought out and I was impressed how serious everyone who competed took it. I’ll definitely do that again.

Sherdog.com: Do you have future plans for more Mind, Body and Soul tournaments?

Yackulic: I had a lot of compliments about how well it was run. However I know I can do better. More mats, more rings, more judges and a new twist on the pro matches.

Sherdog.com: Any fights coming up for Team Sniper?

Yackulic: This fall should be a busy one … we should be at three or four events representing.
