By the Numbers: UFC on ESPN 42

Kevin Holland elected to engage on Stephen Thompson’s terms, and “Wonderboy” made him pay the price.

In a wildly entertaining affair, Thompson gradually imposed his will with a multi-faceted striking arsenal that ultimately prompted Holland to retire on his stool after four rounds in the UFC on ESPN 42 “Thompson vs. Holland” main event in Orlando on Saturday night. Though he may no longer be a serious title contender at 170 pounds, Thompson nonetheless showed that he still has plenty left in the tank — even at 39 years old.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC on ESPN 42, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

6: KO/TKO victories in UFC competition for Thompson, tying him for the fifth most in the history of the welterweight division. In addition to Holland, Thompson’s victims include Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger, Robert Whittaker, Chris Clements and Daniel Stittgen.

282: Combined significant strikes landed by Thompson (163) and Holland (119). Holland was at his best in Round 1, when he outlanded “Wonderboy” by a 49-to-34 count. Thompson gradually took over, however, outlanding his adversary 38 to 33 in Round 2, 43 to 25 in Round 3 and 48 to 12 in Round 4.

103: Significant head strikes for Thompson. By comparison, Holland landed 52.

42: Significant body strikes for Thompson; Holland landed 23.

2: Takedowns landed in 6 attempts for Holland. He logged only 1:21 of control time, however, because he preferred to engage with Thompson in a standup fight.

44: Significant leg strikes landed by Holland. Thompson, meanwhile, landed 44 significant strikes to the legs.

8:01:49: Total Octagon time for Rafael dos Anjos, who became the first person in UFC history to surpass eight hours of cage time during his submission victory against Bryan Barberena in Saturday’s co-main event. The recently-retired Frankie Edgar is No. 2 in total fight time in UFC competition at 7:57:10.

21: UFC triumphs for dos Anjos, which ties him with Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier for fifth all-time in promotion history. Only Jim Miller (24), Andrei Arlovski (23), Donald Cerrone (23) and Demian Maia (22) have won more than the former lightweight champion.

5-4: UFC record at 170 pounds for dos Anjos, who has welterweight wins over Kevin Lee, Robbie Lawler, Neil Magny, Tarec Saffiedine and Barberena.

4: Consecutive victories for Matheus Nicolau, the longest active winning streak in the UFC’s flyweight division. The Brazilian earned his first finish of said streak, knocking out Matt Schnell in 1:44 into Round 2 on Saturday night.

2: Knockdowns landed by Nicolau in the fight, giving him eight over the course of his eight-fight UFC tenure.

5: Consecutive finishes for Sergei Pavlovich, who needed just 54 seconds to dispatch Tai Tuivasa in their featured heavyweight encounter. That ties the Russian with Islam Makhachev and Jalin Turner for the longest active finishing streak in the UFC. It’s also the longest active knockout streak in the Las Vegas-based promotion.

6: Career knockdowns for Pavlovich, including two against Tuivasa. He also outlanded his opponent by a 23-to-2 count in significant strikes.

21: Significant strikes by which Jack Hermansson outlanded Roman Dolidze in the opening stanza of their middleweight clash. Dolidze turned things around in the second period, trapping his foe in a calf slicer and unloading with ground-and-pound for a TKO win at the 4:06 mark. Dolidze was credited with three submission attempts in the fight.

1,253: Days since Eryk Anders last finish, a 78-second KO of Vinicius Moreira at UFC on ESPN 3 on June 29, 2019. The former University of Alabama football player stopped Kyle Daukaus via TKO at the 2:45 mark of Round 2 in their middleweight clash on Saturday.

3: Consecutive KO/TKO victories for Phil Rowe, who rallied for a third-round technical knockout victory over Niko Price in a featured welterweight encounter. That ties him with Jack Della Maddalena, Jamahal Hill and Ilia Topuria for the second longest active knockout streak in the promotion.

47: Significant strike deficit for Rowe in victory. Price outlanded “The Fresh Prince” 34 to 20 in Round 1, 34 to 17 in Round 2 and 42 to 26 in Round 3.

182: Significant strikes landed by Angela Hill in a three-round verdict over Emily Ducote in a preliminary strawweight affair. That figure is the fourth most for a 115-pound fight in UFC history. Ex-champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk holds the top three spots with 225, 220 and 186 significant strikes landed —all in five-round fights. Ducote landed 71 significant strikes in defeat.

9: Strawweight wins in UFC competition for Hill, tying her with Tecia Torres and Rose Namajunas for the third most all-time in the division. Hill’s 21 appearances at 115 pounds are most in strawweight history.

4: Takedowns landed in 15 attempts for Clay Guida in a split-decision triumph over Scott Holtzman at lightweight. “The Carpenter” now has landed 76 takedowns in his UFC career, moving past Demetrious Johnson (74) for the third most in promotion history.

8: UFC bouts that have resulted in a split decision for Guida, the most of anyone in promotion history. He is 4-4 in those contests, with his four victories via split decision tying him for the second most ever in UFC competition.

15: Lightweight victories for Guida, tying him with Rafael dos Anjos, Joe Lauzon and Francisco Trinaldo for fifth most in UFC history. Only Jim Miller (21), Donald Cerrone (17), Beneil Dariush (16) and Gleison Tibau (16) have won more at 155 pounds.

39: Significant strike advantage for Michael Johnson over the final 10 minutes of his unanimous decision victory against Marc Diakiese at lightweight. Diakiese faded after an opening stanza in which he outlanded Johnson by a 23-to-12 count.

110: Significant strikes landed by Johnathan Pearce in a dominant unanimous decision triumph over Darren Elkins at 145 pounds, a career high in six UFC appearances for the Dana White’s Contender Series alum. By comparison, Elkins landed 57 significant strikes.

5: Consecutive victories for Pearce, tying him with Josh Emmett and Movsar Evloev for the fourth-longest active winning streak in the UFC’s featherweight division.

25: Featherweight appearances for Elkins in the Octagon, the most of anyone in the UFC at 145 pounds. “The Damage” checks in just ahead of ex-champ Max Holloway (24) and Cub Swanson (21).

15: Combined takedowns landed by Natan Levy in his last two UFC appearances. Levy followed a 9-for-16 effort against Mike Breeden at UFC on ESPN 35 with a 6-for-10 performance in a three-round verdict over Genaro Valdez on Saturday.

1-4: Record for Marcelo Rojo in his last five professional bouts dating back to 2019. The Combate Americas veteran suffered his third straight loss in UFC competition on Saturday, falling to newcomer Francis Marshall via KO at the 1:14 mark of Round 2. “Pitbull” has been finished in all four of those defeats.

2: Strawweights in UFC history to register two knockdowns in a single fight. Jazmin Jauregui joined Amanda Lemos in this select group when she floored Istela Nunes twice in Round 2 en route to a technical knockout victory in a preliminary 115-pound clash. Jauregui rallied for her 10th consecutive victory after being dropped by Nunes in the opening stanza.

62: Total strikes by which Jauregui outlanded Nunes in Round 2. The Mexican prospect outlanded her foe 76 to 14 in total strikes and 40 to 12 in signfiicant strikes before the stoppage arrived at the 4:06 mark of the period.
