2024 PFL 1 Regular Season Play-by-Play, Results & Round Scoring

The Professional Fighters League will kick off its 2024 campaign with 2024 PFL Regular Season 1 at 6:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+) on April 4 at Boeing Center in San Antonio, Texas. The main card begins at 10 p.m. on ESPN2 and ESPN+.

As the event ushers in the onset of the regular season, fighters in the heavyweight and women’s flyweight divisions will seize the maiden opportunities to accrue crucial points in the standings, laying the groundwork for potential playoff contention as summer draws closer. Bryce Meredith (135.8) vs. Ty Johnson (135.6)

Round 1

The event opens with bantamweight action between Meredith and Johnson. Meredith opens with a takedown, but Johnson starts going for a leglock. Meredith escapes and gets back to his feet. Left hook misses for Johnson, who then eats a jab. A left hook lands for Meredith. A big right hand from Meredith floors Johnson. Using his legs, Johnson wraps around Meredith for a body lock and eventually takes his opponent's back. Meredith is able to spin out and begins unloading some heavy punches from the guard. Some big punches from Meredith and Johnson is showing some redness on his face. Johnson uses a leg lock to sweep and then takes the back of his opponent briefly before losing position. A half-hearted armbar is abandoned by Johnson as Meredith pounds away.

Round 2

The second round opens with Johnson coming out aggressive, throwing kicks and combination punches. Meredith counters with a nice right hand. A left hook connects to Johnson's jaw. Meredith gets a takedown and gets into side control. Johnson recovers his guard and closes it. Johnson goes for a triangle armbar, but Meredith gets out. Johnson uses another leg lock to get to his feet. A nice right hand lands for Meredith, who is in control on the feet. Meredith is walking down Johnson, who is then taken down again. The round ends with Meredith landing a few short punches.

Round 3

Johnson comes out aggressive, knowing that he's down, but it leads to him eating a combination. After a quick grappling exchange, Meredith leaned on top in guard. Neither man can do much, and they eventually get back to their feet. Johnson eats a big overhand right and misses a telegraphed left hook. Meredith pushes the pace, backing up Johnson and getting another takedown. Johnson locks in an omoplata but Meredith gets out and is in control. The round ends with Meredith punishing his opponent while on top.

Lucas Brennan (145.6) vs. Dimitre Ivy (146)

Round 1

Ivy takes the center of the cage. Brennan eats a straight right hand and then is dumped to the ground. Ivy is in guard as Brennan looks for an omoplata. Ivy stands up and Brennan starts kicking while grounded before he's stood up. Ivy lands a quick 1-2 combo. Brennan lands a series of kicks, and his unorthodox approach is having some success. Ivy clinches, and now the two are against the cage. Neither man is able to take the other down or do any damage. They break. Brennan is landing a few kicks, but there's not much to them. A knee lands for Ivy to the body. They clinch again as Ivy lands an uppercut to the body. Some foot stomps for Ivy score before throwing hooks as the round ends.

Round 2

The two exchange leg kicks to start the second frame. Lots of circling with not much engagement backing it up. A head kick from Brennan is blocked, and Ivy lands a body kick in response. Nice right hand from Ivy. Brennan goes for a takedown. Ivy defends well at first but turns and gives up his back. Brennan drags his opponent down to the mat and has three minutes to work. Brennan is looking for a rear-naked choke and is landing some punches trying to cause an opening. Brennan is in full control, thanks to a tight body lock. Ivy is eating a number of punches. Ivy looks to stand up but is brought back down by Brennan's submission attempts. One minute left. Ivy defends a rear-naked choke attempt well and fights the hands of Brennan. The clock expires with Brennan transitioning on top and landing several punches.

Round 3

It's likely even going to the third. Both men come out composed. Ivy is loose and lands a nice right hand. A side kick for Brennan scores. Ivy is setting up his right hand with his pawing left. Short left hook for Ivy. Brennan lands a leg kick but isn't having much success on the feet. On cue, Brennan goes for a takedown and secures the back of Ivy. With three minutes left, Ivy is dragged down. Brennan goes for an arm-triangle choke, but Ivy is able to shake it off and get to his feet. The two are clinched against the fence as Ivy has double underhooks. One minute left. Big offense from either man could sway the judges. Ivy lands a nice knee and is doing slightly more in the clinch. Nice right hand from Ivy as they break. With 10 seconds left, Brennan throws two spinning back kicks.

Round 1

Bishop opens our first fight of the season by taking control of the center. Hackett circles but is hesitant. Bishop sprints forward and takes Hackett's back immediately. Bishop is hanging on while Hackett is still standing. Bishop grabs an arm and is able to bring Hackett to the ground. Bishop has a body lock and is looking for a rear-naked choke. Hackett is staying safe from a submission but is eating a number of punches to the body and face. Hackett finds an opportunity to turn over and is now in guard. Bishop looks for an armbar, and Hackett slams her opponent. However, it only makes the submission tighter. Hackett taps as Bishop gets six points.

Kana Watanabe (125) vs. Shanna Young (128.6: Missed Weight)

Round 1

Watanabe takes the center but eats a straight from Young. The Japanese fighter clinches and then takes the back while standing. Watanabe is backpacking on Young and is looking for the neck. Young puts a hand on the ground as she loses her posture. Watanabe landing short punches as Young defends. Young is fully dragged to the ground. Watanabe goes for the rear-naked choke and is squeezing. Young rolls but can't get fully out. Watanabe bails on the submission, not wanting to tire her arm out. Watanabe stays on the back, and Young postures up. Watanabe switches to an armbar attempt but Young survives.

Round 2

The second round opens with Young landing a few solid shots before Watanabe uses her judo to score a takedown. Watanabe takes the back again and lands some solid shots as she secures her hooks. Young is able to crawl against the fence and starts standing up. However, Young fails to separate, and Watanabe once again drags the American down. Watanabe gets to mount briefly but is reversed as Young is on top in her opponent's guard with 90 seconds left. Watanabe threatens with an armbar attempt as the round ends.

Round 3

The final round begins with Watanabe securing another takedown and once again taking her opponent's back. Young is again defending against a rear-naked choke attempt. Watanabe is controlling her opponent's arms. Young tries to stand with three minutes left. Watanabe allows the American to stand and then drags her back down. Hard knee to the rear of Young. Watanabe stops an escaping Young by once again getting a takedown after a prolonged grappling exchange. Watanabe again takes the back and switches to an armbar but fails to get a finish in this one-sided battle.

Steve Mowry (257.6) vs. Oleg Popov (242.2)

Round 1

Our first heavyweight fight opens with Mowry taking the center and showing off his size advantage. Popov catches a kick and pushes Mowry into the cage. Mowry reverses position and lands a knee. Popov is in deep on a single-leg takedown and gets it. Mowry is in full guard and quickly gets back up. Popov goes for another takedown, but Mowry is able to scramble and take his opponent's back. Mowry is looking for a rear-naked choke. Popov is defending well with less than two minutes remaining. Mowry settles for a face crank and squeezes hard before giving up. 30 seconds left. The round ends with Popov reversing and sitting in guard.

Round 2

Mowry scores with a front kick. Popov is able to easily enter boxing range and lands a powerful left hook. Popov pushes Mowry to the fence. Mowry looks a bit tired. Popov separates, catches a knee and secures a takedown. Mowry attempts a triangle, but Popov denies it and gets to side control. Popov is in total control and raining down punches in a crucifix position. No defense from Mowry, so if Popov threw more, this would likely be stopped. 90 seconds left. The referee looks closely. A ton of unanswered blows, albeit light ones, and the fight is mercifully stopped. That is five points for Popov.

Taila Santos (126) vs. Ilara Joanne (126)

Round 1

Santos uses her reach to find success on the outside. However, Joanne is throwing wild combinations and is able to have some success. A left hand clips Joanne, and Santos secures a takedown afterward. Santos gets into mount and looks for an arm-triangle choke. Joanne gets out of the submission with a little over three minutes left. Santos looks for an americana lock briefly. Santos unloads with punches before letting her opponent up. Joanne is immediately taken down again and gives up her back. Santos slaps on a rear-naked choke, and it's over! A quick tap and six points for Santos.

Blagoy Ivanov (257.2) vs. Sergey Bilostenniy (248.4)

Round 1

Bilostenniy opens up with a nice leg kick. Ivanov eats a jab but answers with a straight left of his own. Both men are swinging. Nice left hook from Bilostenniy. Both men are visibly shaken when the other connects. Bilostenniy eats two straight lefts and is coming up short on his counterpunches. Ivanov fakes a takedown and lands a short uppercut. Ivanov having a lot of success with his left hand. Bilostenniy is reactive as Ivanov is starting most exchanges. Bilostenniy gets stunned for a second but stays on his feet. Both men landed good punches.

Round 2

The minute break has clearly helped Bilostenniy, who looks recharged. Nice bodywork from the Russian. Ivanov eats a huge overhand right. Bilostenniy is pouring on punches, and Ivanov looks hurt. Ivanov pressures Bilostenniy against the cage and goes for a single-leg takedown. Bilostenniy defends well and stays against the fence but is letting Ivanov recover. They separate, and Ivanov looks gassed. Nice left hook to the body by Bilostenniy. Both men are tired, and their form is getting sloppier. Ivanov clinches and is doing well with dirty boxing. Nice uppercut by Ivanov. They disengage but clinch again shortly thereafter. A high kick is blocked by Ivanov. The round ends with Ivanov in control, who likely stole it after the early onslaught.

Round 3

The left hand is still working well for Ivanov. Bilostenniy backs up Ivanov against the cage. They separate after Bilostenniy loses his mouthpiece. Nice right hand to the body for Bilostenniy. Both men are slowing down. Ivanov stumbling forward and landing hard left hands. Uppercut for Bilostenniy misses. Nice jab from Bilostenniy. Ivanov is showing heavy damage to his right eye due to the jabs. Nice body punches from Bilostenniy. Both men are going back and forth, although nobody is coming close to hurting the other significantly. Close round that ends with an Ivanov flurry.

Round 1

Our final prelim of the night. Golm opens with a nice right hand and strikes first. James misses and gets taken down on a trip. James isn't showing much defense, but Golm isn't looking to advance past half-guard. James is eating short punches. Golm stands up and starts unloading on James, who is sitting against the cage. Golm decides to get back to the ground and goes straight to mount before James rushes out. Golm is now in side control. James scrambles out and gets a takedown of his own. An exhausted Golm tries to escape but is now sitting on the ground as James rains down heavy shots. Golm is eating shot after shot. No real defense besides covering up. Golm goes belly down, and the fight is called off. Six points for James.

Dakota Ditcheva (125.2) vs. Lisa Mauldin (125.8)

Round 1

Ditcheva controls the pace early on the feet. A nice combination is followed up by a kick. Mauldin throws a leg kick that is caught, and she's then taken down. Ditcheva takes the back momentarily, but Mauldin jumps to her feet. Ditcheva finds success in the clinch until Mauldin throws her to the ground. Ditcheva gets back up. Nasty punches by Ditcheva to the body. A charging knee from Ditcheva downs Mauldin, who covers up. Ditcheva keeps the pressure and starts landing heavy shots. Mauldin is allowed to stand up but eats a front kick, a knee to the body and several punches before the fight is stopped. A beatdown by Ditcheva, who will earn six points.

Liz Carmouche (126) vs. Juliana Velasquez (125.2)

Round 1

Carmouche comes out aggressive and pushes Velasquez into the cage. The American lands foot stomps, knees and small punches, controlling her opponent. Three minutes left as they're still clinched against the cage. They almost separate, but Carmouche won't let go. Velasquez lands a few punches to the body. The Brazilian lands a knee and is able to back away. At a distance, Carmouche is able to punch her way inside. They clinch against the cage again. Carmouche attempts a takedown but can't take her opponent down. Both women are jockeying for position, with neither really getting much of an advantage. Dreadful to watch.

Round 2

Nice right hand from Carmouche opens the second round. She follows up and goes in on a double-leg takedown. Velasquez sprawls well and stays upright for a while but is eventually taken down. Carmouche is in half-guard and landing small shots to the head. Some nice knees to the body from the American. Carmouche is put in full guard and uses a can opener. Carmouche stands up and lands a few leg kicks before diving into half-guard. Carmouche controls the final 90 seconds, moving into side control and nearly getting an armbar at the very end of the round.

Round 3

They immediately clinch against the cage. Velasquez lands a few shoulder strikes, which will surely change the tides of the fight. Nice knee to the body from Carmouche. Velasquez is having some success at a distance, but it only lasts for about seven seconds before Carmouche gets a single-leg takedown. The Brazilian is sitting in guard, ready to lose a decision. Carmouche stands up with three minutes left and eventually wades back into Velasquez's guard. Carmouche gets to side control. Two minutes left. Carmouche gets to mount position. Velasquez is hanging on as Carmouche cups her ears. The American postures up with thirty seconds left, which is when Velasquez goes for a leg lock. However, Carmouche counters with a heel hook until the fight ends.

Denis Goltsov (245.4) vs. Linton Vassell (240.8)

Round 1

Goltsov opens the co-main event with some solid jabs. However, Vassell is able to lift his opponent in the air and slam him down. The British fighter advances to half-guard and lands some thudding blows. It's slow progress, but Vassell gets to side control temporarily. Vassell is controlling the action as Goltsov lies on his back. Vassell gets into mount but is swept. Goltsov ends the round landing a few punches on top.

Round 2

Goltsov comes out aggressive and trips Vassell. Goltsov gets reversed with Vassell landing in guard. However, Goltsov is able to sweep and gets in half-guard. Vassell gives up his back. Goltsov lands some solid punches but can't come close to a finish. Vassell is exhausted and can't get back to his feet. Goltsov keeps on the pressure and is doing damage. The round ends with Goltsov in charge and having all the momentum. It's now even going into the final round.

Round 3

Goltsov is the much fresher fighter. He opens with a 1-2 and then a knee to the body. Goltsov throws Vassell down and starts landing punches. Vassell gives up his back and is content to just eat shots without trying to get up. Vassell is doing nothing. Goltsov could end the fight at any time if he decided to throw more than 1-2 punches at a time and then take a break. An exhausting display to watch. The referee finally waves it off despite the output staying the same as Vassell is doing nothing. Four points for Goltsov.

Ante Delija (244) vs. Valentin Moldavsky (237.4)

Round 1

Both fighters are feeling out to start the fight. Delija is the first to get aggressive, landing a nice hook. After a low blow, they get back to throwing. Moldavsky lands a nice body kick and is able to get inside. A hook to the head cuts Delija on his hairline. A big overhand right stuns Delija. Moldavsky unloads, landing a dozen punches, landing a knee to the head, and then throwing a dozen more! The fight is waved off and Moldavsky earns a quick six points.
