Aung La N Sang, Bibiano Fernandes Defend Belts at One Championship ‘Century’ Part 2

Aung La N Sang dashed Brandon Vera’s two-division championship dreams, as he retained his light heavyweight crown with a second-round TKO victory in the One Championship "Century" Part 2 headliner on Sunday in Tokyo.

A wild final exchange set the stage for N Sang’s victory. “The Burmese Python” rocked Vera with a spinning back elbow and when the UFC veteran tried to answer with one of his own, N Sang ducked under it and landed a right hand before shoving his opponent to the mat. From there, the 34-year-old Hard Knocks 365 representative unloaded with a barrage of unanswered left hands while Vera remained on all fours near the fence, prompting referee Kemp Cheng to wave off the contest.

It was the seventh consecutive victory for N Sang (26-10), who has finished all but one of those wins inside the distance. Vera (16-8), the promotion’s heavyweight champion, saw a four-bout winning streak come to an end.

Earlier, Bibiano Fernandes improved to 3-1 in his rivalry with Kevin Belingon, defending his bantamweight belt via rear-naked choke at the 2:16 mark of Round 2. Fernandes took control early, landing a takedown and spending much of the opening stanza in top position.

Fernandes again took the action to the mat in Round 2 when he caught a Belingon kick and landed a takedown near the fence. The 39-year-old Brazilian quickly moved to side control and then took his foe’s back when Belingon attempted to escape. Shortly thereafter, Fernandes was able to secure the fight-ending submission.

The previous two meetings between Fernandes (24-4) and Belingon (20-7) ended in controversy. Fernandes was victorious in March when Belingon landed illegal elbows to the back of the head, while Belingon captured a contentious split verdict at One “Heart of a Lion” last November.

In the evening’s official co-main event, submission ace Shinya Aoki made short work of Honorio Banario, as he choked his adversary unconscious just 54 seconds into their encounter. Aoki (44-9) immediately forced the clinch and tripped Banario (14-10) to the canvas. With his foe in a kneeling position, Aoki locked in a brabo choke and rolled Banario over, tightening his grip. Banario asked out of the contest in a matter of seconds.

Four-time UFC veteran Arjan Singh Bhullar had a successful One debut, as he took a unanimous verdict over Mauro Cerilli at heavyweight. In a contest that took place primarily on the feet, Bhullar was able to do damage with his jab and powerful uppercuts to secure the nod from the judges. Cerilli did his best to answer with offense of his own, but he was unable to land as effectively as his opponent.

In other action: Mei Yamaguchi took a unanimous verdict over Jenny Huang; Yosuke Saruta defeated Daichi Kitakata by knockout 59 seconds into Round 2; Shoko Sato stopped Rafael Silva via technical knockout 4:30 into the second frame; Hiroyuki Tetsuka captured a decision against Hernani Perpetuo and Takasuke Kume earned a three-round verdict over Koshi Matsumoto.
