Conor McGregor Praises UFC 236 Feature Bouts as ‘How Fighting Should Be’

UFC 236 included a pair of “Fight of the Year” candidates at the top of the card, as both evening’s main event and co-headliner more than delivered.

Dustin Poirier outlasted Max Holloway in the evening’s headliner to claim the interim lightweight belt, while Israel Adesanya pulled away from Kelvin Gastelum down the stretch to capture 185-pound interim gold in the evening’s co-main event. In following with his recent habits, Conor McGregor took to Twitter to chime in on what went down at UFC 236.

“Amazing main event fights,” McGregor wrote. “How fighting should be!”

McGregor, a former two-division champion, owns triumphs over both Poirier and Holloway earlier in their careers. He outpointed a very young Holloway at UFC Fight Night 26 in August 2013, and he stopped Poirier via technical knockout at UFC 178 in September 2014 when both men were competing at featherweight.

“Max you are insanely tough! Please rest up now young Uce, you are a warrior head to toe! A champion FOREVER,” McGregor continued. “Congratulations Dustin on a much deserved UFC title to your career. It is Nate next for you like previously scheduled.”

McGregor’s comments toward Poirier are of particular interest. The Irish star could be angling for an immediate rematch against Khabib Nurmagomedov after losing to the Dagestani champion at UFC 229. However, the UFC seems ready to book Poirier against “The Eagle” in a title unification bout. Poirier was scheduled to face Nate Diaz at UFC 230 this past November before the bout fell through.
