Dana White Noncommittal About Immediate 'Cyborg' - Nunes Rematch

By Nathan Zur Jan 1, 2019

On Saturday night at UFC 232, the first-ever women’s dual division champion was crowned when Amanda Nunes shocked the MMA world with a ferocious opening-round knockout of Cristiane Justino.

“Cyborg” went into the fight as the favorite, with her only loss coming back in May 2005 in her professional debut. Since then, the 33-year-old has been on a tear and most observers believed bantamweight champion Nunes would be her next victim. However, it wasn’t to be, as the “Lioness” landed a slick combo knocking her Brazilian counterpart to the mat before finishing her.

In the immediate aftermath of the fight, “Cyborg” was gracious in defeat but declared that she wants an immediate rematch with Nunes.

“Of course,” Justino said. “Of course. I can rematch [Nunes] any time Dana White wants to put it together. I love fighting and this has put more fire in my heart to continue fighting. ... When I go step in the cage, say I want to prove something. I like to improve. I like to get better and continue training. And after this fight, for sure, I’m going to train harder.”

According to UFC president Dana White, though, it won’t happen anytime soon due to how convincing the win was (courtesy of Bloody Elbow):

“I don’t think you do (an immediate rematch),” White said. “It was a pretty convincing win. I gotta get back in the lab and figure it out (what’s next for Cyborg), but we’ll come up with something for her.”

However, an emotional Nunes was non-committal when asked for her feelings about an immediate rematch, claiming she wants to just enjoy the moment before sitting down to map out her future.

“I don’t know,” Nunes said. “I have to sit down with my coaches and see the next step. It’s too soon to talk about.

“This moment is huge in my life, you know?” Nunes added “I have to process it. I can’t think about anything else right now, honestly. We’ll see what is going to happen next.”
