Jose Pedraza vs. Edner Cherry

Round 1

Cherry fires off a series of jabs as soon as the fight begins. Pedraza eventually gets going with his own jab but Cherry is much looser. Cherry opens up with an onslaught of hooks to the head, but the defending champ covers up nicely. Cherry slugs away at the body after Pedraza pops him with a right cross to the ear. Cherry is very aggressive with the jab and hooks but Pedraza is calm, fending most of the attacks off. Hard right hook to the ribs by Pedraza late. Three-punch combo by Cherry late but nothing clean lands. 10-9 Cherry.

Round 2

Cherry clinches immediately and Edner is cautioned to let go. Cherry goes to the body again and then ties Pedraza up. Cherry clinches again and the ref warns him for repeated octopussery. Pedraza cracks him with a right cross but Cherry takes it. Cherry misses a few wild lefts and rights. They come together after missing lethal hooks and they inadvertently slam their faces together. Luckily, neither man is hurt or cut. Pedraza counters a missed overhand right by Cherry. Another clinch. Cherry is aggressive late but none of his shots find a place to land. Pedraza jabs to the body before being tied up at the bell. Close round. 10-9 Pedraza.

Round 3

Cherry bolts out of his corner and unloads a flurry but Pedraza blocks most of it. They clinch again and the ref stops the bout to warn them that he’s, “tired of it.” Back on, Pedraza moves back side-to-side. Cherry chases after him but can’t catch him. Cherry misses three bombs and is pelted by a counter right to the face. Nice stiff jab by the Puerto Rican midway through the frame. Pedraza slams another nasty right to the intestines after avoiding a right hook. Jab/right by Pedraza late. Cherry backs off and then misses a wild left hook. 10-9 Pedraza.

Round 4

Cherry misses a three-punch combo at the start. Pedraza lands a glancing left hook and then a right cross. Pedraza goes to the jab as he backs away. Cherry lands a few jabs of his own. Cherry eats a left hook just as he throws a left/right but he takes it well. Pedraza ducks under another wild flurry from Cherry. They stand toe-to-toe briefly, but Pedraza gets the better of the two. The action slows late as they posture and look for an opening. Cherry finishes the round with a nice flurry, punctuated by a loopy right to the noggin. Another close round. 10-9 Pedraza.

Round 5

Pedraza backs away and circles to his left early, popping his challenger a few times with the jab. Cherry continues to come forward, flicking out his jab as well. Cherry now takes a step back as Pedraza changes direction. Pedraza jabs to the head and body. Cherry isn’t quite as active as he was, allowing the champ to dictate the pace. Some boo birds make an appearance late in the round as they alternate jabs. Very stiff jab by Pedraza snaps Cherry’s head back just before the bell. 10-9 Pedraza.

Round 6

Cherry comes out with a barrage to the head and body. They stand forehead-to-forehead and slug away to the body. Cherry lands a nice overhand right to the head during the exclusively inside fight early. Uppercuts to the chin and hooks to the body by both. They remain in close quarters, which is what Cherry wants. Pedraza lands a right but cherry counters with a sizzling right hook. Pedraza is rocked and backs off. Another right by Cherry and Pedraza continues to back off. Good action late but Cherry has snatched control of the fight. Pedraza cracks him with a left hook but it’s answered by another right by Edner. Nice exchange between the two at the bell. 10-9 Cherry.

Round 7

Cherry goes right back to where he was in the previous round. Cherry nails him with a sinister right hook up top but he take sit well. Pedraza decides to get on his bike early, forcing cherry to chase after him. Cherry lands another nice overhand right as Pedraza backs into the corner. They clinch and maul a few times and the ref warns them again. Cherry drills his foe with a leaping left hook and it’s clean, but Pedraza’s jaw is superb. Pedraza dishes out a lead right to the nose, but Cherry comes right back with a left and right. Another hard right hook upstairs by Cherry late. They trade leather but Cherry’s right comes home again. 10-9 Cherry.

Round 8

Pedraza opens the round as a southpaw, but Cherry couldn’t care less. He slams a combo into his body and head and is taking the fight to the champ. Pedraza tries to fend him off, but Cherry is relentless. Cherry decides to back off and reestablish the jab, allowing Pedraza to come forward. Cherry ducks under a double jab and rifles off a hard right cross to the jaw. Pedraza’s right eye is reddened and swelling up, but he’s throwing his jab effectively. Pedraza taps a few jabs to the body late. Very close round as Cherry seemed to give it away. 10-9 Pedraza.

Round 9

Cherry comes out aggressively early, seconds after trainer Dan Birmingham lays into him to throw more. Cherry is all over the champ, but nothing clean is landing. Pedraza connects with a right hook, but they clinch before anything can come from it. Nice lead left by the champ, but Cherry tags him with a right. Cherry is able to land a few decent punches upstairs with a minute left. Combo to the body and head by Edner before clinching. A few jabs by Pedraza late but Cherry counters with a glancing right to the jaw. Very close round again. 10-9 Cherry.

Round 10

The two come right out and slug away. Nothing hard lands for either man before they back off to reset. Cherry goes with the jab before popping his foe with a short left uppercut on the inside. Pedraza remains a southpaw and fires out several jabs. Cherry answers with a pair of nice jabs of his won. Pedraza’s right eye is swelling badly with a minute left. Cherry dishes out a nifty right to the head, but eats the same punch in return. Counter left hook over a lazy jab by the Bahaman. Cherry opens up with a flurry late, grabbing the round in the process. 10-9 Cherry.

Round 11

Pedraza slips out of position and has to cover up just as a monster right hook comes his way. Cherry goes with a nice left hook/right cross and then follows it up with a sizzling choppy right to the face. Pedraza seems to be tiring a little as Cherry continues to come right at him. Another solid right connects for Cherry. Pedraza changes direction and decides to come right at the challenger, which allows him to land a lead left. Another lead left smacks off Cherry’s head but Edner counters with a right/left. They exchange a wild flurry at the bell but almost every strike was smothered. 10-9 Cherry.

Round 12

The fight is likely up for grabs coming into the final round. Birmingham is imploring his pupil that they need the round, to go out and get him. Cherry listens and flies out of his corner with a barrage. Pedraza obliges and swings away, leading to an exciting exchange. They clinch a few times in between the exchanges. Cherry misses a wild left hook and is tied up. The ref warns the pair for repeated clinching. Cherry just misses a right to the head but he comes right back with a right/left with 70 seconds left. Clubbing overhand right and then a left hook by the challenger. Pedraza comes back with a nice left hook. Cherry is cut over his left eye from a glancing overhand right. With 10 seconds left, they go toe-to-toe. Pedraza is cut around his right eye at the bell. Very close round. 10-9 Cherry (115-113 Cherry).

Adrien Broner vs. Khabib Allakhverdiev

Round 1

Broner misses a pawing left hook but follows it up with a few jabs. Allakhverdiev is very hesitant as he paws with a meager jab here and there. Broner keeps away, looking to counter his foe, but the Russian won’t let his hands go. Finally, Allakhverdiev tosses out a right and left, but Broner blocks them both. Allakhverdiev tags his with a southpaw jab to the body but Broner comes back with a pair of jabs to the mouth. Lead right by Broner but Allakhverdiev comes back with an overhand left. Nice lead right to the head by Broner at the bell. 10-9 Broner.

Round 2

Broner flicks out a pawing jab repeatedly to measure his foe. Allakhverdiev is slightly more active but he misses with a right and left. They trade meager jabs with Broner’s back to the ropes. Allakhverdiev counters a jab with a straight left and then a shot to the ribs. Straight left to the body by Allakhverdiev after taking two jabs to the face. There’s some redness and around the Russian’s right eye late. Very slow pace thus far but Broner does land a nice right uppercut on the inside. They trade rights upstairs just before the bell but Broner’s is harder. 10-9 Broner.

Round 3

Allakhverdiev pops him with a nice right hand on the inside, forcing Broner to clinch. Broner backs and looks to reestablish the jab. Adrien dishes out a slick left check hook but Allakhverdiev is unfazed. Lead right to the grill by the American at the midway point. Broner misses with a loopy left hook before tying his foe up. A few jabs by Broner late keep the charging Allakhverdiev at bay. Allakhverdiev tags him with a decent right hook but Broner is unfazed. Broner misses a wild left hook at the bell. 10-9 Broner.

Round 4

Broner lands a few jabs and then a sizzling right to the head. Allakhverdiev continues to paw with his jab but Broner cracks him with a terrific laser of a right. Allakhverdiev walks through it but winds up walking into a carbon copy of that previous right hand. Allakhverdiev stumbles forward during a flurry and is clipped by a check hook. Broner backs into a neutral corner, where Allakhverdiev tries to unload a barrage. Everything either misses or is blocked. Stinging right to the jaw near the bell by Broner, who is in total control. 10-9 Broner.

Round 5

Allakhverdiev comes inside and rakes to the body but Broner is there to counter him with a left and right. Allakhverdiev walks forward like a zombie, trying to make it a brawl, but Broner is elusive. Allakhverdiev pins his foe in the corner and opens up, forcing Broner to cover up. Broner escapes the corner and lands a volley of moderate strikes to his opponent’s head. Allakhverdiev dives back in and tries to force a war. Broner pops him with a counter right to the head. A few jabs by Adrien with a minute left, but his powerful left uppercut misses. Triple jab followed by a right uppercut by Broner. Allakhverdiev tags him with a right to the head and flurry to the body. Broner closes the round with a counter right/left hook. 10-9 Broner.

Round 6

Broner sticks him with a jab and then a right. Another left. Allakhverdiev continues to be aggressive but he can’t trap Broner long enough to land much. Broner now backs himself into a neutral corner seemingly on purpose and avoids most of the incoming shots. Allakhverdiev goes right at Broner, who obliges and nails him with a right uppercut. Nice sustained action between the two but Broner’s punches are much sharper. Allakhverdiev has some swelling under his right eye as he eats another jab. Broner is now the aggressor with his jab and powerful overhand right. Broner flurries late but he just misses a lethal right uppercut at the bell. 10-9 Broner.

Round 7

Allakhverdiev paws with the jab as Broner just stands there, looking to counter. Broner comes alive and pounds his foe with a few jabs. Nice double left hook by “The Problem” but Allakhverdiev is unfazed. Allakhverdiev comes inside but he’s hit with a right uppercut. Allakhverdiev backs into the ropes and Broner attacks with the jab and right. Nice flurry by Broner before Allakhverdiev escapes to his left to regroup. Allakhverdiev is slowing down considerably with a minute left. Broner sticks his jab out there repeatedly, keeping the Russian away. Short left, straight right by the America as Allakhverdiev backs off. 10-9 Broner.

Round 8

Broner lands a few hard jabs to the body right away. Broner drills him with a hard counter left hook but the Russian walks right through it. Broner jabbing away and is opening up his toolbox. Counter right, left hook by Broner a minute in. Broner is picking him apart from the outside. Broner is talking to commentator Paulie Malignaggi while Allakhverdiev pins him in a corner and clubs away. Broner avoids it all and then escapes while still talking to Paulie. Nice flurry by Broner before landing a hard left hook. Allakhverdiev lands one of his own just before the bell. 10-9 Broner.

Round 9

Allakhverdiev trainer John David Jackson says he will stop the fight unless the Russian shows him something in this round. He needs this round, he said. Broner keeps a distance with a stiff jab, preventing Allakhverdiev from getting inside. Nice counter left hook by Broner after avoiding the right hook from his foe. Allakhverdiev tries to pressure him and opens up a flurry but Broner blocks it all. Allakhverdiev goes with a seven-punch combo but Broner avoids everything. Hard, chopping right hand on the inside from Allakhverdiev backs Broner up. Huge right uppercut by Broner as Allakhverdiev walks straight in, his best punch of the fight. Allakhverdiev doesn’t even blink as he continues to come after him. Allakhverdiev traps Broner in the corner at the bell and slams several shots to the body. 10-9 Broner.

Round 10

John David Jackson is pleased and allows the fight to continue. Broner begins the frame with a series of jabs. Broner continues with the jab before landing a check hook. Allakhverdiev can’t get past the jab, making for an uneventful round thus far. With a minute left, Broner tosses out three straight lead rights. Hard double jab/right/left by Broner late and it backs Allakhverdiev into the ropes. Allakhverdiev comes right back with a flurry to the head and body. Broner explodes with a multi-punch flurry at the bell, capped by a right to the head. 10-9 Broner.

Round 11

Straight right by Broner, followed by a left hook. Allakhverdiev answers with an overhand right but Broner lands a jab and left hook. After a delay to repair loose tape on Adrien’s glove, the fight continues. Allakhverdiev’s right cheek is cut and swollen as Broner nails him with another left hook. Broner rocks him with a left hook and then unloads a furious flurry to the head and body. Cracking right hand staggers Allakhverdiev, who has no choice but to swing away. He regroups but Broner is still popping his jab out there. Left hook by Broner but Allakhverdiev answers with a sweeping right hook at the bell. 10-9 Broner.

Round 12

Allakhverdiev obviously needs a miracle knockout in order to pull this one off. The ref and doctor are threatening to stop the fight before the 12th starts. Allakhverdiev comes out and digs to the body while Broner stays in a shell. Broner backs off, using his jab. Allakhverdiev misses a right hook a minute in. Allakhverdiev slams a flurry into the body but Broner pops him with a short left hook in return. Broner is barely active, staying defensive as Allakhverdiev tries in vain to get things going. Thudding left hook to the gut hurts Allakhverdiev. Broner nails him with a straight right and then opens up a flurry to the head and body. Allakhverdiev is rocked and backs off but referee Harvey Dock Jr. has seen enough and stops the bout.
