Rocktagon MMA to Make Cleveland First Stop on the Road to Amateur National Title

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Rocktagon MMA will open their 2012 series at the Ohio City Masonic Temple on Saturday, January 21st with Elite 12 Pro-Am. This event kicks-off an action packed season, which will include Regional and National Championships and a run for the first-ever amateur National Title.

Elite 12 is shaping up to be an evening of intense competition. With both pro and amateur fights plus a title shot on the ten-bout plus card, fans will not be disappointed! The main event of the night will feature Dave Vande Velde (0-0), from Kim’s Martial Arts, in his professional debut against Kelli Gottardo (1-2). Vande Velde went 6-0-1 as an amateur against the likes of Reggie Parks, Anthony Morgan, and Landon Khakboust.

The 185-pound title is up for grabs in a bout that just might prove to be the fight of the night. Edwin Taylor and Freddie Musgrave are both described by Rocktagon MMA matchmaker Michelle Kring as “excellent fighters with total heart.” Taylor, from Non Stop MMA, has a wrestling background, qualifying for the state championships while at Strong Vincent High School in Erie, PA. Musgrave, from Goliath Gym, will be a fierce competitor; he won his most recent Rocktagon MMA bout with a spinning back fist that knocked his opponent out cold, breaking his jaw. Fans can expect this fight to last until the final bell!

Elite 12 fighters will be among the first to begin the qualification process for a shot at the Regionals. Rocktagon MMA CEO James Jeda shared his plans to take the best of the best from local Rocktagon MMA events and give them a bid to the championships, “We are excited to give Rocktagon MMA fighters a national platform while they are still gaining experience as an amateur. I believe our fighters will seize this opportunity to grow their fan base and develop the skills necessary for a possible move to the professional level. “ Jeda will share details of the qualification process with the fighters and fans at the January 21st show.

Rocktagon MMA will make the Ohio City Masonic Temple a home base of sorts, returning to Cleveland every four to six weeks as they expand their national program. “This is a great venue for a fight,” Jeda says. “The historic building creates a unique and intimate experience – there literally is not a bad seat in the house.” Along with Temple shows, Rocktagon MMA plans to hold events in other areas of Ohio and at least seven additional states this year, including California, Texas, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Louisiana, and Florida before concluding the season with the championship series.

Rocktagon MMA, founded in Ohio in 2010, is a premier mixed martial arts promotion dedicated to hosting quality events and taking skilled fighters from obscurity to the national level by helping them build a strong presence in the MMA arena. Elite 12 takes place Saturday, January 21st at the Ohio City Masonic Temple, 2831 Franklin Blvd in Cleveland, Ohio. Doors open at 5:00 pm with the First Bell at 7:00. Tickets range from $25-70 and may be purchased in advance online at www.rocktagonmma.com or by calling 440-934-4662. As always, the fight card is subject to change.
