Double Threat

Mackenzie Dern showcased a more well-rounded game in her lopsided victory over Angela Hill at UFC Fight Night 223.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt dropped Hill with a right hand in Round 1, rattled her with a standing knee in Round 3 and generally made life miserable for her opponent with a barrage of heavy ground-and-pound en route to a dominant unanimous decision triumph in Saturday’s headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. While Dern’s vaunted submission game was still a factor — she nearly trapped Hill in armbars on two occasions — it was encouraging to see the Arizonan look more versatile than she has in previous bouts. As for her rankings status, Dern remains entrenched at the No. 9 spot, but continued improvement could lead to an ascent in the months to come.

As for Hill, she has become one of the UFC’s most reliable competitors in recent years, but her overall track record has been inconsistent at best. The 38-year-old Alliance MMA representative demonstrated remarkable heart in going the distance with Dern, but it wasn’t a performance indicative of a ranked fighter. Angie “Overkill” falls from 14th out of the poll, clearing the way for newcomer Tabatha Ricci, who has won her last three UFC bouts at 115 pounds.
