Cosmo Alexandre: From Frustration to Renewal
Although three-sport talent Cosmo Alexandre is the owner of a brand-new contract with One Championship, relations with the promotion have not always been as harmonious as they are now. As the multi-time kickboxing and muay Thai champion explained to Sherdog, a destructive 39-second knockout of former Ultimate Fighting Championship star Sage Northcutt last May and a change in management quickly led to a new arrangement.
“They [once said], ‘if you don’t fight now, I don’t know when you’re going to fight.’ For me, it’s like you have to fight. So I went there and I lost. My first KO of my entire career. I had 104 fights [before that] and that was the only one I lost by KO. So of course, it was bad feelings about One Championship after that,” Alexandre told Sherdog. “Then I won the fight against Sage in 29 seconds. All the world was talking about that. Now it’s time to renew my contract. I wouldn’t fight anymore if they wouldn’t renew. I think at first, they didn’t believe me. I had another manager, and they started talking. But after a while I saw it wouldn’t work. They started fighting too much. I was with my manager, my coach, Chatri (Sityodtong), Matt [Hume] on the phone and it’s just a fight. We couldn’t even talk, it was just fights. Then I was like, at the end of the day I’m losing money. I’m not fighting. I need to change [management]. So I changed to Ali [Abdelaziz], and Ali has a very good relationship with Chatri. Twenty four hours later, I have the [new] contract in my hands.”
Along with detailing his frustrations throughout the duration of his original contract, “Good Boy” also explained why he chose to remain with the organization. Plus, he gave his thoughts on when he might return to action, and if it would be under mixed martial arts, kickboxing or muay Thai rules.
