  • Yves Edwards: Bout Against Jeremy Stephens ‘Works Out Perfectly’ By: Sherdog.com Staff

Yves Edwards, on “Cheap Seats,” discussing how his experience has helped him deal with opponent switches ahead of his Dec. 8 bout against Jeremy Stephens at UFC on Fox 5:

“I definitely think experience helps a lot and the fact that I’m from an era when I’ve been to shows before there were commissions. Going to shows back in those days, I used to corner my friend and take my gear with me in case someone didn’t have an opponent and I would get a chance to fight. I think that stayed with me in that I’m always ready, always wanting to fight and always ready to fight. So I’m not too worried about that as far as opponents getting switched up on me in the last couple of weeks. Fortunately it was a guy that was I scheduled to fight before. I’ve done a whole training camp for him. I’ve done a lot of video and strategy and tape and study on Jeremy. That cream just rises back to the top, and I’m ready to go. It’s one of those things that it could have been really bad, but the situation actually works out perfectly.”

  • Podcast: Yves Edwards By: Sherdog.com Staff

Jordan Breen and Greg Savage returned to the Sherdog Radio Network on Tuesday for another edition of "Cheap Seats." Joining them was UFC lightweight Yves Edwards.

After Jeremy Stephens was arrested in Minneapolis on Oct. 5, it seemed that we weren't going to get the UFC on FX 5 showdown between Stephens and Edwards. The American Top Team product joined "Cheap Seats" today to talk about the fight that is finally going to happen on Dec. 8 in Seattle. Edwards breaks down the match up in detail, and explains where he thinks he will have clear advantages over his opponent.

Breen and Savage also chat about mixed martial arts' hottest topics. Who's going to fight Anderson Silva next? Is there another No. 1 contender now that Chris Weidman is out? These answers along with listener calls, emails and tweets await you in the worst seats in the house.

  • Back in the Day, Yves Edwards Used to Badmouth Himself By: Sherdog.com Staff

Yves Edwards, on “Cheap Seats,” discussing earlier days in MMA:

“I really, really miss the days when you had no idea who it was that you were fighting. You just got a name and you just trained with your guys and then you went and you fought. I’ve been in arenas and I’ve talked to people that I was going to fight and they didn’t know they were talking to me. They were like, ‘Yeah, I’m fighting this guy. His name is Yves Edwards. You know him?’ I’d be like, ‘Yeah, I know that guy,’ but I’d never tell them it was me and then we’d get in the ring and they’d be surprised. It would kind of throw guys off, I think. I would talk badly about myself ... and how bad I sucked, but then it’s time to fight.”

  • Edwards Personifies Class By: Jason Probst

Yves Edwards has seen a lot in his 58-fight career. | Photo: Peter Lockley/Sherdog.com

If you wanted to compile an instructional tape from things a guy had done in fights, you could make a pretty good one from the career of Yves Edwards. That is because Edwards competed across multiple eras in MMA, putting together a wealth of knowledge and experience, fighting often as the name opponent brought in with the deck stacked against him.

With a subtle jiu-jitsu game, sound standup and plain old hard-learned know-how from fighting anyone who would oblige him, Edwards’ 58-fight career is testimony that a fighter can always keep learning. Having made his Octagon debut at UFC 33 in September 2001, Yves was a staple lighter-weight fighter for hardcore fans for more than a decade.

He is also one of the true good guys in the game. Writing about fights and fighters is, in theory, an objective exercise, but seeing Edwards get starched by Sam Stout at UFC 131 on Saturday only reminded me of how much I appreciate the great fights and consistent professionalism Edwards has shown in his career. MMA’s an unforgiving game, and Edwards’ decision to continue is his own. He deserves recognition for the long road he has taken to still stay at this level and the great fights he has given fans.

A few years ago, while interviewing Din Thomas, I asked him about a potential match with Edwards. The two had waged a memorable freestyle rap battle on the Underground forum, to boot.

  • Winners, Losers from UFC Fight Night 22 Prelims

The preliminary portion of every UFC event usually comes and goes with little to no fanfare. As an avowed lover of all things undercard, let us put an end to that trend with a top-to-bottom breakdown of the UFC Fight Night 22 dark matches. Insert Al Pacino-style “Hoo-ah” here.

    Yves of Destruction

Talent has never been an issue for Yves Edwards. Ask most anyone who has trained with him and they will tell you that if talent were the end-all be-all of MMA, Edwards would be a perennial top five lightweight. Of course, talent accounts for only part of the equation, and Edwards’ mental hiccups are well-documented.

However, the fighter whose growth was stunted by losing winnable fights was nowhere to be found at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. Time and time again, John Gunderson went for takedowns and tried to hold his own on the feet. He accomplished neither. It was the kind of complete, three-dimensional performance for which Edwards’ fans pray every time he enters the cage.

Six years ago, Edwards was the uncrowned champion of the UFC’s lightweight division. Winning the title he once held unofficially may be unlikely at best, but he still has the game to keep many of his contemporaries from doing the same.
