This Week’s MMA Birthdays: Jon Jones Turns 27
By: Brian Knapp

Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder and pound-for-pound mainstay Jon Jones will celebrate his 27th birthday on July 19.
A winner of 11 consecutive bouts, Jones last competed at UFC 172 in April, when he took a unanimous decision from Glover Teixeira at the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore. The Jackson-Wink MMA representative has defended the 205-pound championship a record seven times, defeating Teixeira, Alexander Gustafsson, Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort, Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida and Quinton Jackson. Jones has pieced together an outstanding 14-1 record since touching down in the UFC in August 2008, a disqualification loss to Matt Hamill at “The Ultimate Fighter 10” Finale the lone blemish.
“Bones” will put the light heavyweight crown on the line at UFC 178 on Sept. 28, when he faces Gustafsson in a highly anticipated rematch in Las Vegas.

Ronda Rousey has been nominated for two ESPY Awards. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com
Three Ultimate Fighting Championship titlists -- Ronda Rousey, Jon Jones and Chris Weidman -- have received ESPY nominations for 2014.
Rousey leads the way with two nominations: “Best Female Athlete” and “Best Fighter.” Jones will compete against Rousey in the “Best Fighter” category, while Weidman’s UFC 162 triumph over then middleweight champion Anderson Silva is a candidate for “Best Upset.”
An online fan vote on ESPN.com will decide winners in 33 categories, which also include “Best Team,” Best Breakthrough Performance” and “Best Championship Performance,” among others. The ceremony takes place on July 16 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles and airs on ESPN.
Jones and Silva were nominated for “Best Fighter” in 2013, but boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. ultimately captured the honor for a fifth time. The category was changed from “Best Boxer” in 2007 to include MMA. However, a mixed martial artist has yet to win the award since the change, despite the likes of Silva, Jones, Georges St. Pierre, Lyoto Machida, Quinton Jackson and Randy Couture receiving nominations. Jones and Rousey are joined in the “Best Fighter” category by Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Andre Ward.
Meanwhile, Rousey will go head-to-head against the WNBA’s Maya Moore, alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin and University of Connecticut basketball standout Breanna Stewart for “Best Female Athlete.”
Weidman is matched up with a pair of men’s college basketball upsets: the University of Connecticut basketball team’s national championship triumph as a No. 7 seed and No. 14 seed Mercer’s first-round shocker against Duke in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson will meet again on Sept. 27. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com
After some posturing, negotiation and maybe even a little misdirection, Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson 2 is finally a done deal.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced on June 5 that the Jones-Gustafsson rematch will take place at UFC 178 this fall. The pay-per-view event is expected to take place on Sept. 27 in Toronto, although the location and venue could potentially change.
After what appeared to be plenty of back-and-forth between Jones and the Las Vegas-based promotion, everything was resolved when the light heavyweight champion and his team met with UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and UFC President Dana White in Las Vegas.
“There was never an issue with a contract,” Jones told UFC.com. “I was traveling and finally got to Vegas and got to talk with Dana and Lorenzo.”
Prior to those negotiations, White had said that Jones requested to fight Daniel Cormier instead of Gustafsson.
“I think Cormier is the tougher fighter, but the fans want to see me fight Gustafsson. There was never an issue with taking the Gustafsson fight,” Jones said. “The issue was that my brother is getting married in July, and I would have preferred a later date. I didn’t want to go this early and I would have preferred to go later in October or November. It is what it is. We have a date now. This was a personal decision for me. I will be at my brother’s wedding and have a proper training camp.”
Jones faced the most difficult test of his career in defeating Gustafsson via unanimous decision at UFC 165 in September. The light heavyweights have competed once since then, with Jones scoring a dominant triumph over Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 and Gustafsson stopping Jimi Manuwa via second-round TKO in March.

Jon Jones’ Brazilian Tour Provides Plenty of Laughs
By: Marcelo Alonso
Jon Jones had fun during a recent Brazilian media tour. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com
Last week, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones traveled to Brazil for brief -- and entertaining -- media tour.
After giving a seminar in Curitiba, Jones recorded a commercial for the Combate channel in Sao Paulo. During one of the spots, “Bones” did his best Bruce Buffer impersonation by mimicking the famed ring announcer’s “It’s Time” introduction. The series of commercials will begin to air on many of the channels offered by Brazilian cable and satellite provider Globosat, including Combate, SporTV, Multishow, Sexy Hot and Megapix.
Perhaps Jones’ memorable appearance, however, came during a segment on the popular late-night program Altas Horas on the Rede Globo network. Jones was a guest on the episode which aired following last Saturday’s “Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3” finale.
In a light-hearted moment, Jones showed off his Don Juan tendencies on Altas Horas by asking sexologist Laura Muller how often she had sex. When Muller said she couldn’t talk about her private life, Jones switched gears.
“Ask her if she’s ever been with a black guy,” Jones said, drawing laughs from those in attendance.
Things took on a more serious tone later in the program, as Jones also talked about Chael Sonnen, his wins over Brazilian fighters, his friendship with Anderson Silva and his desire to fight in Brazil. Judging by from the reaction of the Brazilian audience, Jones may very well prove to be a solid draw in the South American country somewhere down the road.
