The cold winter currently punishing some states in Brazil hasn't been felt inside gyms during mixed martial arts competitions.

Curitiba, for example, was boiling last weekend during Storm Samurai. And coming up Saturday in the cold city of Teresopolis, located in the hills of the state Rio de Janeiro, the fourth edition of Fury FC hopes to electrify the crowd with the second half of its 183-pound tournament.

Last week Eduardo Pamplona (Pictures) ruled out of the tournament after suffering an injury; Andre Mikito has taken Pamplona's spot. Four eliminating bouts are scheduled, with the winners advancing to the finals at the end of this year when they will fight twice in the same night to crown the tournament champion.

Experienced fighters such as Daniel Acacio (Pictures), Fabio Negão and Flavio Moura join rising athletes Rousimar Palhares and Leandro Batata to make the tournament brackets unpredictable.

Last year Fury FC held a light heavyweight tournament that saw Thiago Silva (Pictures) become champion, which ultimately led him to the gates of the UFC.

Saturday's super-fights include anticipated bouts featuring Danilo Cherman (Pictures) against Rafael dos Anjos. Cherman trains daily at the Nova União gym -- home for Vitor Ribeiro (Pictures) and Thales Leites (Pictures) -- and he is a Cage Rage veteran, beating Jean Silva (Pictures) in a real battle. Dos Anjos is one of the new names from Gordo JJ's team (formerly GBCT) and is the reigning champion of a tournament promoted by XFC in Brazil. The tough Fabricio Monteiro (Pictures), a local boy from Teresopolis, promises to bring his fans to the audience.

The biggest teams from Brazil -- BTT, Chute Boxe, Nova União, Black House and Gordo JJ -- will have athletes fighting at this Fury FC.

Heavyweights in action at Storm Samurai

Last Saturday in Curitiba the opening round of Storm Samurai's heavyweight tournament took place. Competing in a UFC-sized octagon and using the same rules found throughout North America, Fabiano Scherner (Pictures), Angelo Araujo and Julio Cesar Jamanta emerged victorious, and now are the top names to become champion.

Scherner, a UFC veteran, needed just 23 seconds to KO his opponent -- this event, by the way, was full of knockouts.

Minotoro scores boxing bronze at Pan-Ams

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (Pictures) had a great performance at the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro, boxing his way to a bronze medal in the super heavyweight class.

Nogueira defeated opponents from Trinidad and Tobago as well as Venezuela by a wide margin before losing in the semifinals to a Cuban athlete by the score of 4-0.

Antoine Jaoude (Pictures) was injured and couldn't continue to the end in the wrestling tournament. He defeated a wrestler from El Salvador in his first match, but lost to a Venezuelan athlete and was forced to drop out due to injury. Jaoude hoped to heal up soon enough to fight in the International Fight League's World Grand Prix Nov. 3 in Chicago, Ill.

Sperry speaks about Cage Rage win

Mario Sperry (Pictures) enjoyed Cage Rage 22, where the veteran Brazilian defeated English kickboxer Lee Hasdell (Pictures) in less than two minutes.

"I think this fight was very good for my career," Sperry said. "I needed this action. I needed to fight, and everything went well. Thank God I won."

Days after his fight, Sperry was in Jefferson Silva (Pictures)'s corner for a fight against Aaron Rosa (Pictures) live on Showtime. Sperry has remained in the U.S., where he plans to stay for the time being and open his own gym.

Though Sperry said this project would keep him busy, he wants to fight again this year.

"I'm open to negotiations," he said. "I will fight under 205 pounds; I fought in this weight class before and I felt very comfortable. This will be my weight class forever."
