By The Numbers: Alex Silva vs. Rene Catalan

By Brian Knapp Nov 22, 2021

Strawweight rivals will renew acquaintances when Alex Silva rematches Rene Catalan in a One Championship “NextGen 3” featured attraction on Nov. 26 at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. A former Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion and longtime black belt, Silva submitted Catalan with an armbar in their first encounter eight-plus years ago.

Operating out of the star-studded Evolve MMA camp in Singapore, Silva has lost two of his past three bouts. He last appeared at One Championship “Battleground 2,” where he took a three-round unanimous decision from Li Tao Miao on Aug. 13. Catalan, meanwhile, enters the cage on a two-fight losing streak. He last competed on Dec. 4, 2020, when he was on the receiving end of a head kick knockout from Bokang Masunyane just 37 seconds into the first round of their One Championship “Big Bang” pairing.

As Silva and Catalan move closer to their rematch, a look at some of the numbers that have accompanied them to this point:

39: Years of age for Silva, who was born on Oct. 10, 1982 in Ubatuba, Brazil.

8: Silva victories by submission, accounting for 80% of his career total (10). His methods of choice: five armbars, one rear-naked choke, one arm-triangle choke and one kneebar. Silva owns two other victories by decision.

6: Losses on the Silva resume, all by decision. He sports a 2-6 record in bouts that reach the judges.

154: Days spent by Silva as undisputed One Championship strawweight titleholder. He laid claim to the 125-pound crown with a five-round unanimous decision over Yoshitaka Naito at One Championship “Warriors of the World” on Dec. 9, 2017 and surrendered it to Naito in their One Championship “Grit and Glory” rematch, as he wound up on the wrong side of a split verdict on May 12, 2018.

82: Combined wins between the five men—Naito (twice), Koha Minowa, Joshua Pacio, Yosuke Saruta and Geje Eustaquio—who have beaten Silva. They sport a cumulative record of 82-27-3 (.732).

42: Years of age for Catalan, who was born in Iloilo City, Philippines on Dec. 12, 1978.

2: Catalan wins by knockout or technical knockout, accounting for 33% of his career total (six). His victims: Naito and Xuewen Peng. Catalan holds one other win by submission—he put away Adrian Mattheis with a straight armbar at One Championship “Quest for Power” in January 2017—and three more by decision.

13: Rounds completed by Catalan as a professional mixed martial artist. He has gone the distance three times and carries a perfect 3-0 record in those appearances.

5: Different countries in which Catalan has competed since he arrived on the MMA scene in 2013. He has gone 1-2 in his native Philippines, 0-2 with one no contest in Singapore, 2-0 in Malaysia, 2-0 in Indonesia and 1-0 in Myanmar.
